Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I personally think the big issue with all the shaping has to be with, and not only blaming, Apple.
They want full control over their releases and therefore do not allow caching by ISP's. This means that every time someone wants to download a 5GB OS update, it has to be pulled over international bandwidth, adding stress to the network. I was also shaped for the first time last night to around 50% (for the first time in about a month).

We'd love to do that, we're really not liking having to shape to this extent. If there was another way to unshape with the resources we have right now, I promise I would be cutting that ribbon already.
For now, I think we need to focus on the best experience, the most stable and solid real time deliver during peak demand, and then using up available bandwidth overnight until we can get something long term in place to relieve the increased demand.
I do think it's contributor. Yesterday we saw Apple Traffic eat up almost a full 1Gbps of traffic on the network - but BitTorrent is still the big bandwidth killer. Even shaped to the maximum - our Uncapped users are pulling almost a 1.5Gbps of torrents.
The more we can encourage people to torrent late at night, rather than during office hours and peak hours in the early evening, the more we can unshape for other shaped services that have less impact on the overall network

Good luck with that. It was those users that killed uncapped Sentech and are selfish and will just move from one ISP to the next until they destroy it. They don't want to hear that their uncapped account has limits.

I promise you that it will.
We still believe that Uncapped is a viable product, but we'd hate to offer a heavily restricted product (when we're not experiencing the current demand issues). But we're thinking about how we can do things differently going forward to offer the best product that works for all our Uncapped clients.

Very true
I can run torrents at half my line's capability, yet it destroys more than 75% of what my line is capable of. It's the biggest reason why I try to stay away from torrents unless absolutely necessary.

+1 I think most of us saw if you run torrents at full line see most of everything else you wanna do just about dies. I use Netlimiter to just allow torrents to use a certain amount of my line speed (if i need to get something from torrents) so that i can still do some work, surf and so.
@Afriman is NNTP just so heavy on your network as torrents?
No, NNTP is a lot "cleaner" on the network in terms of threads/connections, but can also use a fair amount of bandwidth per user - which is why we do shape traffic. I just think that it's a lot easier for people to torrents becuase it's easier to find the content maybe, so it's more popular

No NNTP isn't that rough hey. It whacks out the same as multi-threaded HTTP, due to the limited number of threads, or connections you open. It's more dependent on how much bandwidth you actually use with it.

Just a thought .. Why don't Afrihost start a NZB site for it's customers and educate the users about news servers and how to use them, you can get all your episodes and more from there, it is really not necessary to overload the network with torrents and kill it for us that look at what we get from were and when.

Afrihost, I'm a bit annoyed at the moment.
When you first offered the Free GB accounts, I signed up for one on a 011884 number. I used it once or twice, but nothing happened with it.
I subsequently moved out of that house and used Afrihost as my ISP at my new place. Since I already had an account (Free FB), I used that account in my new house 011463 to get a Business Uncapped account.
Now I want to cancel the ISP at the old house (parents place) and move that ADSL over to Afrihost. To make the change seemless, I want to sign 011884 up with a free gb account and, when the old ISP is cancelled, upgrade the free GB to an Uncapped Account.
So, to clarify to this point:
My account, free gb, linked to 011884
Same account moved to different house, 011463, Business Uncapped now.
want to sign a new free gb account for 011884

The potential to saturate the network in terms of usage is similar. Got many users who want constant line speed for news, just like torrents .

We do have a news server, but I don't know if the educating part is really our place to do. I couldn't really say whether using news over torrents will really bring usage down
If only people would do so, it's really not hard
People in general are impatient and they want to watch the latest episodes of their favourite series ASAP.
I do all my torrent downloads overnight now, only the odd one during peak.

My question was would you investigate and fix it if theoretically a AAA title launches that requires p2p traffic or for whatever reason get's put onto your network's naughty list.
Seeing as gaming is a real-time service, I would hope this is the case otherwise your're advertising is misleading and false regarding real-time services being prioritised, even if it's just one game being shaped I would lodge a case against your advertising with the ASA.
Don't promise your clients one thing and then say but oh it uses p2p even though it is a real-time service, we can't fix it.
You also have gaming as recommended use listed on your 2Mbps+ uncapped products. If the product can't be used for even one game, it's still false advertising IMO
The problem with this is now I feel like I HAVE TO download things at night where as in the past I might have felt like watching a move at 2pm and that would be all I downloaded for days.
