Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Ok this is my cry for help.

I have constant connection issues.
I have my line with Telkom (signed up for that smart/simple package thingie).
I got myself an Afrihost account 1mb uncapped.

During the day my router is powered off. As soon as I get home i power it on.
Connect to the net, do some surfing email etc... 20 minutes into it, the internet light on my router goes red and I have no connection anymore. this has been happening since sunday. I called afrihost 3 times since then, they reset the port and all works fine. sometimes if I just restart my router it connects again. I do not know what to do anymore.

I have since put in my telkom internet details into the router and do not have this problem.

So am i correct in assuming that it is not my adsl line but with my afrihost account?

I wasn't following the latest happenings on Afrihost at the time :) At the same time I am just fed up with having a useless internet experience. I'm hoping a business package solves this

Yo, please remember that shaping ONLY affects torrents and file sharing. If you're internet is generally slow (browsing, gaming, skyping, etc) then it really can't be due to shaping. That would be consistent with throttling, which we don't do, so there is a big difference.

We should run some tests, like testing on the guest account and comparing throughput and latency, so we can determine if it's on the line or possibly even the router.

Still reduced throughput? I'm checking daily but no upgrades, no changes. This is going on since March 22, ffs.:wtf:
Is it so complicated for the repair ship to find the cable break and splice it back together? This is the longest period ever that AH network is showing yellow. Intl gaming is kinda impossible and I'm slowly developing withdrawal symptoms here.

So i signed up with afrihost with an existing telkom 2mbps line and it was soooo good. (netflix and youtube streaming on multiple devices at the same time with an awesome picture and no buffering)

i was so impressed that i decided to transfer my line to afrihost and upgrade it to a 4mbps line and data bundle.... and this is where it seems to have gone pear shaped... The afrihost 4mbps line is craaaaaap, it syncs at about 3.3Mbps, i get about 1.9Mbps on speedtest (about the same i got on my 2Mbps line) youtube buffers all the time and netflix plays on the lowest quality and still buffers.

Afrihost say they are working on it but im staring to get the feeling that they are out of ides....

First you've got to isolate the problem. What speeds do you get from other providers? Load up a free Imaginet or Axxess account if you don't have another to test with.

It is not a Afrihost line, it is still and will remain a Telkom line, Afrihost only manage the communication to Telkom on your behalf.
So instead of you sitting on the phone in a queue for hours on end.
Afrihost cannot fix the line, only a Telkom technician can.
Afrihost can only reset the port, that is about all they can do and increase/decrease your line speed, that depends on the stability at your exchange and the DSLAM you are connected to.

You might consider making your line slower again if 2mbps worked before, maybe your DSLAM or your copper cannot handle the higher speeds.

Post a local and international trace route and also the technical content of your router that indicates your connection and line quality, maybe we can spot the issue.

When you transfer your line to us, nothing physically changes. It is purely an administrative change, where Telkom unlock certain administrative functions on their web portal. No cable or exchange infrastructure changes whatsoever.

Having said that, the degrade in performance is very concerning, and we'd definitely like to take a look at what might be happening. Please drop me a PM :(

Hi, PMd you on this, thanks.

Anyone with a credit card can spend $5 a month on a DNS changer.

So there is this guys named Bob. Bob doesn't know what dns is. So how would he know that one can fool Netflix in thinking he isn't from South Africa?

He would go onto their site and see their message, that Netflix isn't available in South Africa. He would leave it at that. He isn't one that knows his way around a PC but loves movies, heck, even youtube.

Just saying. Its not that easy for your every day Joe.

He could Google the problem?

There is no problem though. That's how Netflix works :) We just jook the system.

Well, the problem would be not being able to access Netflix.

Back on topic, my 6Mbps Afrihost business account is flying tonight. :)
