Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

So when restored, will my Afrigamer account give lower latency than my Telkominternet one?

It depends on whether you are being routed over EASSy currently and if this is adding any additional latency to your traffic.

It's hard to test that now, so most likely we would only be able to determine this once EASSy is back up, unless our network engineers have tools that I don't know about.

Is there anything Afrihost can do to get Telkom to upgrade a DSLAM or sort out congestion? :)

We can do our best to engage them. It's very difficult to make promises in this regard though, as upgrading a DSLAM involves multiple departments like cabling, budgets, technical and specialised planning departments. It can take more than 6 months for Telkom to start addressing issues, depending on the severity :(

Been struggling the last 3 odd weeks with 289ping to EU West League of Legends Servers. 1 out of every 40 odd games i get the normal 197 ping i was getting used to. Some of the matches ping will go down to 239. Not sure what the problem is but i would really like to get back to playing on 197 because this 289 ping is killing me.

Other than the gaming side i havent really noticed any real problems. Sometimes i seem to struggle to connect properly to twitch.tv or espn.com but refreshing a couple of times seems to somehow make it work eventually.

Ive spoken to Afrihost support and they are asking for a traceroute to the EU West LoL server from my side but i have no idea which IP to use.

Spot on Afriman.... But 6 months is a bit optimistic even for Telkom
It has been 2 years now, and our exchange congestion is said to be fixed by 27 June 2013.........:(

I don't understand what these people on the leaderboard download, how can you do 1.5TB in a month?

Exactly the same problem i have been having. Hopefully in the next few days EASSy will be fixed and we can have decent latency again.

Guess I will just have to wait it out :)

Afriman

Is the ship that is repairing the seacom fault the same one repairing EASSy?

No, I doubt that. Last I heard Seacom is still some time away from full repair (next week at least), but we're hoping that EASSy could be up any day now. Guys have been working around the clock. We were actually hoping for an even faster resolution, but the team ran into some issues because the cable was buried deeper than they had initially estimated.

Cool. Just saw a post about Seacom being back by the 22nd and was thinking maybe the ship was doing them both at once.

So

It seems from the posts from today and over the weekend that everything's been running pretty smoothly, which is great to hear. Once EASSy is up, we'll be 100% back on track. Once that happens (and I promise I'll let you know as soon as it does), there should be no issues whatsoever on the network.

Please remember that if you're dropping me a PM, just put your username/ADSL line into the PM, it just helps me look things up and give you feedback faster. I also deal with a pretty big volume of PM's, so it can be easy to lose the thread of a previous convo.

Awesomeness!!! ;)

Dunno what happened, but tonight my line seems stable. Getting 3.5 Mbps on speedtest.net as well as speedtest.mybroadband.co.za. Usually at this time my interwebs is barely usable. I did log a fault with Afrihost and Telkom and I also switched my line to Afrihost. Whatever fixed it, please don't change anything :D I am on the business package though so now the question is, if I downgrade to normal uncapped is my experience going to be the same?

There's no reason why it shouldn't be similar. Remember that shaping applies to file sharing and torrents only. So normal real time experience should really be the same on Business and Uncapped at all times :)

As I thought AfriMan :) Just getting a little paranoid ;)

Speed is much more decent tonight. Whatever you did - don't stop.

Trace complete.

Afrihost doesn't use Seacom as a primary undersea cable, so whatever issues Seacom is having, they won't affect your Afrihost account. We'll await your speed tests and trace route posts and see where the problem lies.

Anyone else in the cape town southern suburbs not able to connect? Specifically Rondebosch East. I cant connect to any isp.
My router's DMT Status = Down

edit: Nevermind, a soft reboot and then hard reboot of said router has now fixed the problem :o

Afrihost's news server performs terribly on my business account. Are there additional settings for business users?

Not to my knowledge. As long as you're on our network, you should be able to connect with the same settings.

Thanks... Can't Afrihost significantly increase the speed of the news server, limit it to Afrihost customers and add it to the shaping system? As oppose to just making it slow for everyone.
