on paper maybe. In practise. I could work Greece for all that mattered... they whole office speaks Greek to me
In work I think people often fall back on their mother language when they need to explain things to a person of the same language. ( meetings are a different horse just office technical IT talk)
It’s good manners to talk in English but in practise it sometimes does not happen. And that is when understanding a different language is nice. Because you can understand what the people are saying around you.
We have a helpdesk. My company is 70 % of the users black Africans. So most of the explaining and troubleshooting happens in other languages but English. They sometimes ask me to help when an Afrikaans user struggles to understand in English. I think it simplifies an problem.
That does mean that 70%+ of the conversation and issues I’m excluded from
Meetings are always conducted in english. Except when the Helpdesk meets. They then use a diffrent language.
