Android beats Apple, every time

So do you guys have Dead Space? How about Instagram? Skype over 3G? Heytell? Photoshop Express? Fruit Ninja? Have you ever seen the Twitter for iPhone UI? It's masterful.

When it comes to apps, nobody beats Apple. That's a fact.

Dam Right!

I don't like chocolate. Refute my opinion.

Let's not derail the thread. Stick to the topic at hand.

The writer made numerous claims that can be dealt with as facts... or proven to be false.

01) The iPad is "just a tablet PC"
02) What Apple does best is to apply their excellent design and marketing skills to relatively standard pieces of technology.
03) Most Apple users quickly become disciples of the company.
04) Android is just an operating system but Apple is an OS and a hardware platform.
05) Android on a good piece of hardware will give an iPhone or an iPad a good run for their money any day.
06) Apple's devices are claustrophobic, restrictive and, dare I say it, oppressive.
07) Apple's extreme control means that quality control is better.
08) Apple is well known for rejecting applications and even controlling the content.
09) Apple also has a habit of banning games that it deems "unsavoury" or applications that are not family friendly.
10) Apple feels it has the right to exercise editorial censorship over the content it delivers.
11) The future of the Internet and the distribution of material on it relies on open platforms.
12) Android has more potential than Apple. There aren't any specific barriers to its development.
13) Android provides a drag and drop development tool which makes it easier for non programmers to create apps.
14) Android encourages openness and experimentation.

You are the one that is making everything a matter of opinion. Let's deal with these facts.... or refute them.

This thread now contains 135 (and counting) opinions on the Andriod vs iphone issue.

The problem here is that 99.9% of these opinions (including the authors) are from people either in the IT industry or with a serious interest in the area (aka mybroadband members).

The problem is that 99.9% of the actual users of smartphones/tablets are NOT as well informed, and frankly they don't want to be. They don't care about most of the pros and cons mentioned here. As an example; the 45 year old dentist who has to choose between an Andriod phone and an iphone doesn't care jack s..t about the development potential of the operating system of his phone. He most likely does not even know that his phone has an operating system. He chooses a phone by looking at the list of features on the box and picking it up and seeing how it feels in his hand.

Apple understands this. That is the reason why they have sold so many gazillion ipads. They understand their target market and markets their products accordingly. High end users in the IT industry (like most of you guys that posted on this thread) is most certainly NOT Apples target market.

If either Andriod or Apple would ever be so stupid as to design a phone or tablet OS that would make all you guys happy they would probably sell only 100 000 of them (or however many IT professionals (or enthusiasts) there are in the world).

Apple wants to sell more so they design their products to suit the needs of the average guy on the street. It it a perfect product? No. Do they care? Not as long as they are selling gazillions of them.

Apple knows their target market!

This article was written from the wrong perspective.

Correct, Apple makes stuff for people that form part of the bell curve (Normal distribution) of society. They are not clever people and if you give them something nice (sexy UI) they will accept everything else as just the way things are (can't use phone as mass storage device).

Then you get people that are on the right of the bell curve - more advanced people that actually know a bit about stuff and are not your average Joe. Call them smart people if you like - for them Android is a much better option. They also understand the need to further and improve things and not fall in the rut where the all accepting normal distribution of society finds itself. They also know that the best way forward is by having some degree of openness - which is what makes Android a perfect option.

So in the end it boils down to if you are smart or just another average person with average needs.

No not really. If you are the developer / seller of the product it really boils down to whether you want to sell 10 of them to "smart" people of 10 million of them to "average" people.

What do you think is the "smart" answer to that question?

Android has a bigger market share than iOS. Just saying...

Android has a bigger market share than iOS. Just saying...

Agreed, although it is spread out over hundreds of products vs the two or three products with iOS.

Was really just trying to reply to the condescending (and slightly superior) "smart" and "average" needs classifications by Rouxenator!

OMG..! This thread has more opinion presented as fact than just about any of the other OS vs OS threads I've ever read. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the Android vs. IOS dust ups, but seriously, move along people... AJB is spot on... 99.9% of cell phone users don't give a damn about being able to mod their phone.

How many members actually post on MyBB? Compare that with the 300,000 Android and iPhones being sold DAILY in the States alone. That's the big picture!

Some of you drink coffee, some drink tea, some prefer the beach while others want to go on a little safari now and then... Contrary to what some posters (on both sides) would have you believe, having a preference doesn't make you less of a human being than the next person, it makes you an individual.

01) The iPad is "just a tablet PC"
Well yeah!
02) What Apple does best is to apply their excellent design and marketing skills to relatively standard pieces of technology.
I'd say mostly design. The marketing is pretty simple when you have a good product.
03) Most Apple users quickly become disciples of the company.
Probably true.
04) Android is just an operating system but Apple is an OS and a hardware platform.
I'd say this is true.
05) Android on a good piece of hardware will give an iPhone or an iPad a good run for their money any day.
That's debatable.
06) Apple's devices are claustrophobic, restrictive and, dare I say it, oppressive.
Well I don't think so! Every day I see new possibilities thanks to the App store.
07) Apple's extreme control means that quality control is better.
True
08) Apple is well known for rejecting applications and even controlling the content.
Most apps don't get rejected. Most apps which are rejected are for good reason (unstable, doesn't do as advertised).
09) Apple also has a habit of banning games that it deems "unsavoury" or applications that are not family friendly.
Haven't encountered that. In fact the one amazing thing about the App Store is the games. And there are plenty of violent ones. As for porn apps, I don't really care. You can use the web!
10) Apple feels it has the right to exercise editorial censorship over the content it delivers.
Well, don't they?
11) The future of the Internet and the distribution of material on it relies on open platforms.
Agree. That's why Apple has always supported open standards on Safari.
12) Android has more potential than Apple. There aren't any specific barriers to its development.
Maybe true. But potential isn't everything. Linux has more potential than Windows! There aren't many barriers to iOS development anyway. XCode is free.
13) Android provides a drag and drop development tool which makes it easier for non programmers to create apps.
What and Apple doesn't?
14) Android encourages openness and experimentation.
Apple encourages good, clean design.

You can have a preference. The point of contention though is which OS is ultimately "better". Pretty much the general gist of it though is iOS for non techies and android for techies from the point of view of which is better to use.

oh review on deadspace...

Dead Space on the iPhone is a great game. It’s limited only by the hardware, which in turn stunts gameplay significantly, but not enough to take away from the experience. It just keeps it from being immersive.

Spot on. "Better" is always a matter of perspective.

Alright, lets turn it around. Which apps are there on Android which I can't get on iPhone? And I'm not talking about keyboard replacements and themes and crap. I mean apps. I'm not intersted in Flash. iPhone has internet sharing, wifi hotspot is coming in 4.3 but it was already out on jailbreak.

Sure you can theme it to look like an iPhone, but I'll be able to tell the difference instantly! Just scroll a list, the FPS should drop LOL.

Anyway, you know what Android is missing. An iPod touch like device! It's been 4 years and nobody is competing with Apple in this field.
