Talking about resolution here. An app designed for a 800x480 screen will not look right on a 480x320 screen or a 1280x720 screen (or any of the multitude of resolutions in between).

I understand what you saying, this argument was true in the console days, not anymore. Example on a PC I can write an app that works on 800x600 or 1024x768 or even 1920 x1080. I can do this and even make the app to use different texture files depending on resolution, and the text auto scales. We do it with web pages all the time. That is why someone can open the same web site you can doesn't matter what screen size he has, well that is until the developer fix his sizes for a certain screen size and not care about the rest but then we can always scroll. You can even code your app to include extra activities when a screen goes above a certain size thereby catering for the tablet devices without the need for a separate application. Like I said if you follow the guidelines of the Android SDK, you avoid that issue totally.

I think a lot of iphone users are getting a little disgruntled because the "cool" phone that is also supposed to have the best OS has now been surpassed by Android, and there might be a little frustration given how much they had to pay to be second best. iphone is a good phone, its just that you can get an Android equivalent that does more for much less.
The iphone used to have it's "sleek" UI to brag about, but if you compare it to android today, it's more antiquated than sleek. I've got a nexus one, which is over a year old, and put next to an iPhone 4 it does so much more.
I love that apps can add context sensitive functionality into the entire phone...just like on a pc, if you install winrar or winzip, you get the winrar/winzip functionality when you right click on a file from anywhere (even if you're using the "open" dialog inside another app)...similarly, android's UI grows with its apps. iOS apps feel very compartmentalized and the UI very simplistic (It's a grid of icons...).

A simple list of pro's that iPhone users don’t get (some they do but have to pay money or jailbrake to do it) There is probably allot more but this is what made me switch:
- I can copy files to my device and edit document and email it copy it off later on another pc without installing 100 meg application I can even do this using wifi.
- I can copy a movie without converting it onto my phone and watch it, and that without even installing some application from the market.
- I don’t ever have to connect my phone to a pc if I don't have one.
- I don’t have to make a back-up of my phone ever, my contacts are automatic linked to my Gmail contacts and all my calender entries are synced as well.
- I can sync my browser bookmarks to my phone without buying or installing another application.
- I am not forced to install an application on my PC to create my playlist and have music on my phone.
- I can install apps to my phone via a web browser on a pc that’s not even connected to the phone.
- I can install applications that I got from other markets or even my hardrive.
- I can locate my phone via Google maps or even remotely wipe it if it ever gets lost or stolen. My phone even emailed me its new number when I swapped the sim.
- I actually have a GUI not a application menu that I call a GUI (Face it iPhone user interface is nothing more than just a simple list of applications on the phone)
- When I install something I can actually see what it has access to, not guess like iPhone applications where you don’t have a clue what the app can really do in the background. Sure you can go into the Settings App and go 1 option at a time to see if the app shows up, but by that time its already installed.
- My phone has proper multitasking, I can have Skype and MSN running in the background Hell I can even put a person on hold while I answer a Skype call.
- I can customize my phone to look like I want, from screens to widgets to skins, it is truly MY phone. Not just change a background of my start menu.
- My phone can pull contact info from my friends in Facebook and use that along my normal contacts even link there Twitter comments next to the picture from Facebook when they phone me.
All this before I even started adding value from the market with a single application. My experience is that Apple designed the iPhone for the developers, as it comes with as little as possible functionality. Sure they have a saying “There is an app for that” problem is “you have to pay for that” As a developer I must say I love Apple cause they protecting my wallet.
Where the Android device was designed for the user as it can do as much as possible out the box. As a user I must say I love Google cause they protecting my wallet.
On Android there is money to be made as well you just have to do it differently. What we do is sell a service and have the mobile applications compliment that service, on Android we can customize an application to that customer for extra, where our iPhone customers just have a general experience.

What I really like about Android is that I can change every home screen, widget, app shortcut, folder, etc tonight and my phone will "look" completely different tomorrow.
Don't want to take anything away from iOS and the iPhone though.....is is still an awesome phone, awesome OS and very good at what it does, but I started getting frustrated if I wanted to copy music, pics, etc. Always had to use iTunes to sync and couldn't delete stuff off the phone. With Android I don't have any of those restrictions.
But competition is always good and keeps everyone on their toes, so don't want to see any OS disappear. Nobody mentioned WebOS and I reckon they might also become a big player later.

Also - with Android I can view my shared folders on my pc over wifi. It see's all the folders and drives, and I can copy what I want to where ever I want. I can even move files between different pc's using the phone. Also, I'm running Ubuntu (full ubuntu 10.4) INSIDE Android in a virtual machine. So it's not dual booting or anything. I can literally multitask-switch to a full pc experience of Ubuntu on my phone while the rest of the phone functions just as normal in the background.

Imagine what we'll be able to do with the dual-core phones + 1GB RAM being released now!
My money is on the HTC Evo 3D that can record videos in 3D. That is gonna be a monster phone. Me wants.
Apple will have to start outsourcing or release different iPhones, there is a rumour floating around that they want to release a cheaper and smaller iPhone.

I have just acquired my first Android device (Motorola Xoom) and I must say that I am very impressed.
The flexibility is just amazing - I don't think that I will be buying something from a fruit company again.

You tell me. All I tried to show is that the numbers game can be played a number of ways. Android fans are quick to show how the OS outsells any other (dominates the market) but iOS fans can just as easily call on numbers to prove that Apple devices outsels anything else. Depends on the perspective and how deep you want to go.

It also out sold everything else on the market, but was a complete failure.
The problem was that the competing system was sold by about ten other manufacturers.

I found the iOS to be little more than a flashy toy (sorry, pun not intended). It was clunky and unintuitive, but smooth and colourful.
But to do any kind of work I quickly got bogged down in it's stupid procedures and immature way of doing things.
I would cry if I was forced to use that all day. The stupid thing does not even have an application close button.
... and that is version 4 of the software. I can only wait to see what version 4 of Android holds for us, because version 3 already leaves iOS waaaay behind in the dust.
And if any of you Apple guys want to challenge me, I challenge you first to pick up an Android device and to actually test it first before replying.

Exactly what do you think was wrong with Betamax ? Technically it was superior to VHS !
It failed because more manufacturers were selling the competing system !
BTW more Android smartphones are sold than iPhones ...

If it was all about functionality we would all be driving Chinese cars. All the bells and whistles cheap-cheap. Fact is we all have different priorities and tastes. Good design, quality and style matters to me. I look for the best balance between the things that matters to me and this is where Apple - for me - wins hands down. Apple oozes good design, style and beauty. No Samsung or HTC does the same for me.
