As per some of the other threads i've seen around, i am also looking to buy a new phone (just out of a terrible italk contract) so i am not looking for any contract based phones.

Budget: R4000
Phone is not really brand dependant

Needs/Wants:

  • 3G minimum
  • Usable internet browser
  • Capable PC Suite type software
  • QWERTY keypad a nice to have
  • Symbian OS first on my list, but not a deal breaker

Had a look at Vodaworld this past weekend, some things stood out:

Leaf - HTC S710 going for R2100 on special (No 3G though) (http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_s710-1891.php)

Samsung - SGH-F480 for R3020 (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_f480-2268.php)

Nokia 5800 looks nice, although don't remember the pricing.

The S710 is pretty old, but not a bad price though. I know it is not the fastest device around so that might drive you a bit nuts.

The samsung looks decent although I have never played with one.

I would say the 5800 wins hands down between those 3. However I am not sure about pricing either.

You could also consider getting a "2nd hand" unwanted upgrade from someone, maybe try get the iPhone?

Thanks for the feedback Grim, the only iPhone that i would have gone after is the 3GS one, unluckily its out of my price range, but i am willing to wait till the new consumer act is in next year to then go out on a contract and get the latest iPhone then!

At the moment the following 2 are also looking good:

Nokia E71 - R4699
Nokia 6700 - R3999

I would maybe wait then and get the 3GS. It will give you a longer life span before you feel the need to upgrade again.

Thos Nokias look ok I guess but personally I got bored of Nokia, no innovation.

Two other phones that look interesting:

Nokia E66 – R4699
Nokia 5800 – R3840

I understand where your coming from, but i also couldnt feel that spending that amount of money on a phone would be right.

I guess there are other considerations as it seems everyone and their dog has an iPhone (2G,3G and 3GS). Its a great piece of technical achievement and it is innovative, maybe just not for me?

HTC Touch Dual perhaps?

I don't know this store, but the phone is under 4k. Perhaps you can check at Vodaworld for their pricing?

Have a look at the TytnII as well. I think it may be above your price range though.

The Blackberry 8110 is also around 4-5k...

PS> The price on the 5800 is around R4000 ;)

Charlie, the guy at the Leaf store told me they don't sell phones for under R5000 :D

Don't know if he was trying to be snooty hehe

Yeah look I love my iPhone 3G, but that’s only because I got it free on my contract else I wouldn't have bothered. The new 3GS pay-ins are absolutely insane, personally I think it is a total rip-off!

There are a number of other phones out there that are just as nice, I guess you just got to do a it more research. Maybe wait a bit and see if you can pick up a HTC for a good price. The magic, Touch Pro 2, dream. They all look pretty sweet.

5800 hands down. An awesome phone

I just bought it on contract at R135 per month from Metro Home Centre at Vodaworld with a free Samsung 8mp camera. Cheaper than the cash price. I know 4U also have it on special quite often.

The only downside is the operating system is so new there's not too many apps available (especially a divx player). But the features are awesome. I love the screen the best 3.2 inch screen, 16 million colours, 640x300 resolution. Web browsing is awesome. Check out the review on GSM Arena.

Alternatively, you can take Iphone 8GB at R185 per month. I was looking for this special before I bought the 5800 but I couldn't find it. Now I see Vodacom Direct has it.
