Apple lambastes fragmented Android and outdated Samsung

Ubuntu and FirefoxOS look like they are going to give us the first real FOSS mobile OS. I'm not sure which one it will be though. FirefoxOS looks like it has traction with manufacturers, so I am leaning that way

It does kinda look that way. I will be keeping a close eye on it. I hope it gets somewhere. Just imagine the possibilities. No more separation between mobile (phones etc) and pc's capabilities.....

Fragmentation drives open source. Apple are too mentally retarded to see this. If it wasnt for the thousands of forks we have had in linux, we probably wouldnt have android... or linux on so many different types of devices.

Fragmented is Apple code for, "you operating system runs on too many devices and theres not a snowballs chance in hell we will be able to keep up at this pace".

Anyone who thinks that "fragmentation" is a serious issue for android simply doesnt understand open source. Whenever I hear the "fragmented" argument, I always think, "what a myopic short sighted idiot".

Seriously, how old are you that you get abusive because someone holds a different (yet valid) view to yourself.
If you are really young then fine, you will get mature

Apples method is not wrong, its just different to what you prefer.
Thats why there is choice

But calling a leading tech co retards because the disagree with you ... really
Calling someone a "myopic short sighted idiot" because they want to upgrade their software or because they want a seamless transfer to their new phone... Really

Wow, you guys...

Fragmentation- overrated. And will become an increasingly smaller issue.

Apple not innovating- debatable.

From a technological and feature point of view- yes, Apple lags behind Android. But many overlook the fact that Android has adopted the iOS route since the proliferation of Android 4.x, namely the betterment of the quality of OS as opposed to how many features it may contain.

Look at Google's Nexus range- they are, at their core, aspirational to the Apple way of doing things. Many denounce vanilla Android because it may lack as many features as say a skinned version. But this is the way that Google believes it should be done. It is kind of telling.

Anyway, today convinced me that as a consumption and media device, the iPad Mini is easily the best. I would wager that there is not a better tablet available, but I suppose that that is tailored to my taste. I will be getting one for myself :)

And yes- until an app the quality of Paper can hit the Play Store, I do agree that app quality, not compatibility, is still a (admittedly decreasing) problem for Android.

You really need to relax and not take stuff so personally. People are allowed (valid) points that are not yours as well. The fragmentation argument (in my valid view) is mentally retarded. There is no other way to put it. Really it is. That is my belief.

Imagine if Microsoft listened to people with silly fragmentation arguments and never made Windows 3.1 after DOS... or never made Windows 95 after Windows 3.1 because a bunch of cobol developers were crying about fragmentation.

Ive been in IT a very very long time and this without a doubt is one of the dumbest arguments I have ever come across.

Dude that statement is a solid MEH worthy. How can you say it's the best media device? Pure simplicity on Android tablet by copying your media directly onto the device and viewing with with many different kinds of apps for whatever you copied on.... You can't beat Android when it comes to entertainment with media.

The there are two things the papples can claim, rock solid (minimal bugs) in the hardware and software and the device goes with your gucci handbag :p

How about just simply asking developers of Android apps. We can tell you, it is a real thing. Is it a major thing that will prevent people writing apps for android? No. But it is still a pain point, and pretending it isn't doesn't help improve the situation.

At least Google is cognizant of it, and it is set to improve

It's a different opinion to yours. Can you not see how someone might value things differently to you?

What is the term for the incompatibility of certain apps with certain Android hardware?

Im not arguing its not a real thing. Im saying its a stupid argument against android. Windows 3.1 developers would have complained about rewriting their apps for Windows 95 as well. If the devs cant keep up then they will be replaced by devs who can. This is the reality. Not being able to code everything in DOS impacts DOS developers as well. Times are a changing. The OS gets upgraded and can do more. If you cant keep up then shame.

I will admit... even with all this fragmentation the poor android developers have.... they sure are able to push out a higher rate of apps than the apple developers. Oh wait... thats cause there are more android phones and more android devices , ergo more developers and development.

Exactly. Thank you

Like ....releasing new products that they can't make enough to meet demand for? Any other company in the world would kill to be in their position in the market currently.

Not one part of what you said makes sense to me. Perhaps I'm just struggling to focus on you plus every other post in this thread but there doesn't seem to be even the germ of an argument here. iPods declined because they got replaced by smartphones and tablets. What are smartphones and tablets being replaced by?

Prove it.

It's economics 101. (http://www.writeawriting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/plc-product-life-cycle-curve.png). That's a product life cycle. It applies to all products, none are exempt. The only thing that changes is the time line.

If I knew what would be replacing smartphones and tables, I definitely wouldn't be saying it here. I would be out there developing it. My guess is something like the Ubuntu option. Take your phone home, plug it into a docking station and you have a PC or slide it into your tablet and you have a tablet with the same data, etc.

It's not even that tablets and smartphones have to go anywhere, phones haven't gone away yet Nokia is still in big trouble. They didn't adapt quickly enough.

Prove that iPhone and iPad rate of growth is slowing? Just go to google, increase in sales as a percentage is slowing. Yes, they are still selling more than they did last year but it's impossible for that percentage growth to increase into the future. It will run out of people. It's not a consumable item so the number of sales is limited to the number of people.

For example, in 2010 apple sold about 39 million iPhones. In 2011 it was 72 million. Thats 84% growth. In 2012 it was about 125 million. That's about 73% growth. Growth is slowing.

No, no, no.... hold on a second now. You're the one who posts 'dont be an iDiot' threads and I'M the troll?

Firstly, it was one thread. Not threads. Get your facts straight :)

Secondly, are you serious? Are you not capable of laughing at a joke once in a while? If someone posted something funny about Android, I would laugh it off, not hold grudges and call people trolls because of that. If someone does that all the day, everyday, then, and only then are they a troll. I posted one joke and I hurt your feelings? Sheesh  You iPhone peeps are sensitive :p

You didn't post something funny about iOS, you were insulting iOS users.
You might laugh at something funny about Android, but I doubt you would find it equally funny if it was a thread started to insult Android users. Do you see threads titled "Don't be a Droidtard"?

But thanks for the "iPhone peeps" rather than the normal insult thrown around here

With regards to the tablet market, I think Android is quite far behind Apple in regards to the quality of the catalog. Take Flipboard for example.

There was a very interesting article on The Verge about it a while ago, where they took a large sample of apps from the big name (Netflix, CNN, Amazon, etc) on both iPad and android tablets, and compared the quality. It's worth a read

Oh, come on. It's the truth, isn't it? Apple fans have been paying way too much money for their devices. Everyone knows this.

You can go ahead and post your Droidtard threads. I will laugh at it because it's a joke... something that you clearly don't get.

As you were.

Well, I did say for my taste, so I am allowed to be subjective :)

As an Android user, I do have serious misgivings about using iOS. I will miss the sheer level of customization, the comparatively ease of access and use, and the larger variety of features.

But for content and media consumption, allied with build quality, industrial design, app quality and what I want to use the tablet for, I really think that it is an absolute gem. Hell, even with iTunes. I think I could live with it.

I think that I also just want to try something different :)

Why would I want to do something like that?
