If you willing to trek to Oriental Plaza in Fordburg, Golden Peacock serves the most amazing dishes.
It's not as formal as The Raj, but the food is much much better.
I've also heard good things about Ghazaals in Sunninghill

That's off Church Street, bordering Queenswood. Excellent food and atmosphere, but rather pricey too.

yep, Curry Palace is great and Chicken Tikka Masala is awesome...Actually had it tonight, Ferndale shopping centre, corner Main & Oxford, Randburg, Do it!
agreed. as mentioned b4, Vagaar also good but not necessarily authentic/top notch. good enuf if you dont wanna drive far from PTA East. they are down the road from me.

Was recently in Chennai - wow!! some of the best food I have eaten. I dont know how the Indians do it (or maybe I am not going to the right places in SA) but the hot food is really really tasty - but in SA I find the hot food is mainly just hot - not tasty.

Hot food in India is spicy and hot food in SA is just lots of red chilly powder.
That's what we call a Durban curry, very little resemblance to the stuff you get in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc.
We had a Pakistani place here for a short while that made lovely curries but they sold it to normal Indian okes and it closed shortly afterwards.

As mentioned in an earlier post...The Golden Peacock does good Indian food. Their bunnies are good. They are situated in the Oriental Plaza.
Indo's...(Same complex as Midrand Teazers)...do a good bunny as well.

Not necessarily - although I have had wonderful food on my many trips to Mumbai.
Different parts of India is famous for different foods.
The food in the south are generraly stronger than the north.
The South African Indians originate mainly from Tamil Nadu Province in the south or from Gujarat Province in the north. There is a lot of other places - it is a HUGE country - and you get good and not-so-good food everywhere.
It also depends which type of Indian cuisinse you had in SA.
