Sorry, I am not too clued up about multimedia players. A friend of mine wants to get one of these - the ones that hook up to the telly. I've heard about MVix and the likes. What would you recommend? Thanks.

MVix is pricey.

Alternatives:

Magnetox P210 2.5" external enclosure + multimedia player ( video , music , photo ) , aluminum , SATA hdd to usb 2.0 + Audio out + video out ( rca + s-video ) headphone output , with remote control

Check out the Popcorn Hour. Compafrica are the local distributers.

I'd second the Popcorn Hour ...

Actually I take it back .... after seeing the Tvix ... THAT must be the best multimedia player out there ;)

I dunno how I missed that. Thanks.

It's R799 for the unit and you can put your own 3.5" hd into it.
It's not he HI DEF unit but it has everything u need in a mediaplayer for cheap. I have mine 3 years now and looking at getting the Hi Def one in the near future to couple my LCD TV.

These are the official re-sellers, but I bought it directly from the importer - see the "contact us" details on above site.

EDIT I see you are in Cape Town - the importer is situated in Bellville, Cape Town.

Is CODEC support upgradable?
With downloadable files the MKV subtitles and codecs can vary and change rather quickly. The H264 support at L3 with various optimisations for
examples may need upgrade every few months, can you do that
with this player?

Thanks
