BlackBerry versus Android versus Apple

Blackberry's success always baffles me. I suppose it is that "free" internet that appeals to people in this country where data is still shockingly expensive.

I dunno. Blackberry's have traditionally been popular due to the security offered by BIS

Its TV imo.
All the TV shows they use BB, now they all using iPhones.
I swear theres a link there.
And because its relatively cheaper, especially the 8520s

Not certain the average man on the street even knows about encryption and security to be honest...

I actually agree with you. "Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton have BBs so they must be good". "Ooh, look DJ Fresh and XYZ are using an iPhone so I want one". "If I own one I'll be cool too".

As much as some may deny it most of the purchasing decisions are based on this aspect. And it needn't even be celebs. If all your friends are using BBs it's likely you'll be roped into getting one too. Or iPhones. People tend to love "selling" their device of choice (hell, I'm guilty of it) and most are very susceptible to peer group pressure.

I think SA is just slow to catch on.

I think as data becomes more affordable in the coming years we would see a large chunk going elsewhere.

I also think that unless Apple releases a cheaper iPhone, the large chunk wont be Apple...

We should all realise that we should not put our faith in the logic of any majority in this country, just look at who we voted for every election ;)

Comparing Apple to Android is fundamentally flawed as you compare a manufacturer to an Operating System. Not apples with apples, if you will. :D

When comparing IOS to Android, Android is bigger.

When comparing Apple to any other manufacturer (Samsung, etc.), Apple is substantially ahead.

Doesnt samsung make a bunch of components for apple (CPU, ram)

so that would put samsung ahead again? :)

This article tells us that Vodacom now has at least 5.1 million smartphones on its network: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/cellular/50541-more-smartphones-lower-data-prices-for-vodacom.html.

The total of BlackBerry, iPhone and Android devices as said in your article comes to about 3 million.

Which OS's constitute the other 2 million smartphones. My guess is that it is Symbian, WP, Bada etc in that order.

I would not be surprised if Symbian has at least 750,000 users, WP 400,000 and Bada 100,000. Not quite sure about Bada, maybe another OS.

Nevertheless, that 2 million difference of other smartphones needs surely to be accounted for.

Could it be Nokia phones. Perhaps it is all 2 million of them (WP and Symbian)?

I tend to think that BlackBerry's success is a lot like Facebook's - people use it because people use it. Everyone is on BBM in this country, mostly due to the relative cheapness of BIS - it's a great value proposition here - so either you're also on BBM, or you just miss out.
