broken bone

My example only happens on a femur break.

Your Muscles around the Femur is some of the strongest muscles in your body. When your Femur breaks the muscles because of the tension, pulls the knee part of your leg upwards to your hip. This forces your femur sections (now broken in 2) to push into tissue and can rupture veins. Now the bone marrow inside your femur then leaks out into your tissue and can be absorbed into the blood stream. There is a name for that condition I just can't recall it now.

That is also the reason a femur break is put on traction. The tension of the muscles make it impossible for the bone to be put back in the right spot without it.
No traction for me - just a whole lot of metal including a bar running the length of my femur. Still got it somewhere. I wish they'd been able to do that with my tib/fib but for that they used an external fixator with screws going in from the outside. Used to bang that thing on everything.

Now that must be seriously painfull :(

seems i've had it easy then. the pain was bad but i managed to stay calm during the trip to hospital. it shattered but none of the pieces were dislodged, the was no internal bleeding and my muscles are all intact but swollen as hell. i've also got the pin that runs the length of the bone. Yesterday when the nurse was cleaning the wound i noticed i was stapled shut instead of stitched up. I am getting discharged in few hours - can't wait!

Dude... what the hell were you piggybacking?... 2 Sumo Wrestlers?

Xrays

Here's the broken leg:

Here's another pic. Look at those mini UFO's by my thigh lol. It's the buttons from my jeans and the reason they're so high up is because i had tracksuit pants under them; twas a cold night.

This is me with the pin inside Those things along my side are the staples:

You broke your Femur and are in pain?

Broke both of mine just as I left school, I don't recall it being very painfull appart from the traction they had on my legs. Did you have a bloodtest done yet ? You can die from a Femur break as the bone marrow can get into your blood stream and cause some other condition = Death.

Broke my femur (and some other bones) almost twenty years ago. After two days they realised my marrow mixed with my blood and I woke up a week later in ICU, being shaved.Got a plate and nine screws fitted and off I went.

Exactly six weeks after leaving hospital I fell and broke the same leg again. What an ordeal! The doctors wanted to amputate but I would not consent. I ended up in traction for a long time before a pin was inserted down the marrow tube from my hip to my knee. Then the doctor broke off a drillbit in my leg and I had to be operated on twice again afterwards to have it removed.

Next time I break a leg they must just shoot me right there like they do with horses! tco21, hope you're better soon!:D

holy f! dude, how old are you? you cant really classify this as a pathological fracture though - you were carrying 2 other people! but a femur should NOT fracture like that unless there was an underlying weakening process going on. have them check for any tumours like DJ... suggested. like a bone scan maybe? ask about going for a bone desity scan as well - men get osteoporosis too. cant really see anything funny on the xrays other than the terribly fractured and displaced femur (and then the pin). good grief that must be sore. condolences ++. hope you get well soon. :)

Orthopedic surgeon suggesting that it was my coca cola addiction and lack of diary product (calcium) intake, but when I told him about my bike accident he was pretty convinced it was that. The hairline fracture caused the bone to soften for repair and the rest is history. It's definitely not a disorder because I was able to leg press 350kg (I weigh 62), so it couldn't have been a freak occurance.

Just take it easy, do the fisio and get lots of sunshine. Also if you smoke, think of quitting as it slows bone growth.:D

caffeine FTL! good for weight bearing exercises though. still go for the bone density scan sometime. hope you get well soon!

Agreed. Although I wouldn't completely rule out the diet. Having read your posts on your motorbike accident, it seems that even at that time your femur was slightly brittle for it to have hairline fractured. But there is no way of telling now. Atleast you are well on your way to recovery now!:D

The worst pain i felt was removing 4 wisdoms at once, cant imagine how that felt.

Try cracking your sacrum! That is probably the worst I have ever felt. You cant walk or sit/lie down. The best thing for a person to do when they have a broken sacrum is to be in zero gravity. Worst of all, they cant cast it or wire it or pin it etc. It has to heal by itself!

Ouch, must have been damn sore. I have broken both fibulas and my right tibia as well as left patella in 2 accidents and if if a broken femur is more painful then just kill me next time. I lost half my ankle bone in the first accident and that hurt for over a month. What does suck now still many years later is not being able to do heavy squats/deadlifts without some kind of pain rearing up. I worry about pain when I get to around 60 but who knows hey.
