Burgundy Estate: ADSL Availability update

Hi All

Just like to update you on my own findings RE: burgundy estate and ADSL. I bought a place on the far end of Burgundy Estate in Indigo Drive. I noticed the property has a drawbox outside, usually used for telephone lines. I went to the Telkom shop in Canal Walk yesterday to find out about a telephone line and ADSL.

They said that Telkom telephone line availability is still very iffy in Burgundy Estate, and that ADSL is even more challenging. Apparantly, the closest DSLAM is in Bothasig, and that some of the properties past a certain point in Burgundy Estate are too far away. That whole last-mile thing.

Even worse, the guy mentioned that the Bothasig DSLAM only has 15 ports left for ADSL and then they do some serious work before anyone else can get DSL. And that could take months apparantly.

But the worst news: I gave him my address, and he said that the street isn't even on their system yet, meaning that there aren't any telephone lines going to that complex yet.

Maybe its time to start a petition. Burgundy Estate is a new upcoming area, which will soon be booming. I find it disappointing that Telkom hasn't had the foresight to install phone lines there. I mean the municipality installed sewerage and water. Why couldn't Telkom think ahead?
 
It works both ways. Most reputable property developers are aware that they can contact the Telkom planners to ensure service provision and to install the underground infrastructure prior to the houses being built.

GOT TELKOM LINE IN BURGUNDY ESTATE BUT CAN'T GET ADSL YET

I recently ( last week) got a Telkom line in Burgundy estate - I stay in Ruby Estate, close to the clubhouse. It took about 2 1/2 months but got it eventually. They have to put new underground cables in and now we up and running. The only issue is that we are now battling to get a ADSL line. They also told me that we are on the Bothasig exchange and that there are know available ports. This will take about 2 to 4 months to sort - as per the call centre.

I am not sure what the mission is because Checkers in the the complex and I am sure that they had to give them an ADSL line - or they would not have been up and running and if they could give them a line I am sure there should be infrastructure available for the rest of us.

I am very frustrated with this - and I call them every week to get updates. So will keep you guys posted. If you hear of anything, please let me know as well.
 
I live in BE and have not been able to get a ADSL link yet, I applied in March and still nothing :( So I am paying for a telephone line that I don't use. Burgundy has been around since 2006, so I don't think we going to get any adsl coverage in there anytime soon. I also heard that BE has fibre links (could be misinformed though) which is a problem for Telkom to.

Anyways goodluck hope you have better luck than me.

Burgundy Estate should get their own exchange, seeing that it will soon be huge.
 
I ordered a phone line. Telkom has yet to get back to me, since the issue is now with their Planning Department, whatever that is. I hope thay plan on getting better. But anyways, they said that if the planning department can install a phone line, it will allocate a phone number, which they can then use the check the availability of ADSL, before the phone line is even installed. But if you guys are struggling to get ADSL, my chances are slim to none. I don't quite understand why its so difficult because Richwood across the road has no trouble getting ADSL. As for the fibre issue, Telkom has to sort that out for themselves. ADSL over fibre has been proven to be more than possible. Its just Telkom multiplexing the single fibre they lay (to save costs) too densely.

I agree with PseudZ, Burgundy Estate should petition Telkom to come and fix the mess and install an exchange. Burgundy Estate will soon be the next Royal Ascot, with a vast number of inhabitants. A vast number of inhabitants without access to the Internet.

On a side note - has anyone in Burgundy Estate managed to get that Satinlink Wireless internet thing they tote on the Halt Security website. Apparantly, somehow Halt Security can hook you up, but I can't find any info on pricing or bandwidth etc.
 
Hey guys I say in BE Zinfundel, near the bothsig side. Anyhow, took me about 9 months before they installed my adsl

I can tell you this much. ADSL does work here, all the lines (except the one from your building, but that takes 10mins to install) is installed and working. Since I ordered 9 months before getting it, nothing changed with the infrastructure, which means, it was always ready.

However, telkom is somewhat concerned about the exchange being too far, but so far I have had no problems with that.

All I can say is, telkom is up to sheit, and the people coming to investigate our area has no clue whats going on. So keep trying until they do it.

Only reason I seems to have been able to get it, was that the people who normally comes here was busy that time and someone else came through.

Another problem is that your application form, does not get moved from pending stage soon, infact it will stay there for the next 2 years unless you hammer them.

As for the burgundy wirless internet, its expensive. If I remember correctly, it was about the same as normal vodacom 3G prices.
 
eafreak: would you mind posting your ADSL stats (attenuation, SNR etc) just for interest sake.
 
Living in Smallville in BE.

Tooke me quite some time to get my telephone line installed let alone get my adsl activated.:mad:

Have had it now for over 12 months though.

Mine (at work) looks like this:

my modem does not display all that info, I am using a netgear from telkom

this is only stats I see that might be useful
As for the distance, I honestly cant remember how far it was, however, the technician did tests and was able to get stable connection up to 2mb line.

You can be sure that a large company like Checkers is not using ADSL lines for their internet connections.

I also stay in Zinfandel, and Telkom say no infrastructure :( what the hell :mad:

I think you should just keep trying. I ordered a phone line on their 10212. I phoned them back a few days later to ask about their progress, and they said it would take 21 working days to lay the cable to the complex. Just a few days before that, I went to the Telkom Shop in Canal Walk and they just responded, you can try to order, but you will only end up on the waiting list. They pretty much didn't even bother placing the order.

I wish I could find somebody at telkom to talk to about Telkom and their infrastructure in B.Estate. Someone high up in the company, because there's no use talking to the telkom shop people, or even the supervisors at their call centres. It just don't help. Maybe getting a newspaper involved to get their attention?
 
If you live in Burgundy Estate and would like to get ADSL please PM me, I made contact with the Telkom Network Planner. Maybe we can sort something out there.
Also if you know of someone who lives in Burgundy Estate who already has ADSL, please try to get their details, especially their DSL Stats (SNR, Attenuation etc), and possibly their phone number and PM that to me as well. If I can gather enough stats, I can show it to the Telkom people who could then act on it.
 
It's not just Burgundy Estate. I bough flat bang in the middle of Bothasig and get the same bull now. Exchange is full and new infrastructure must be put in place before even Bothasig residents can get ADSL. And everybody around has ADSL. Absolutely pathetic. They also gave me the 21 days for a callback bull and after a month I had to call them to find out that new infrastructure can be expected March 2011. Whoohoo. How's that for transferring your line. 6 months without internet. Whatever would I do if I ran a business from home?
 
Yes thats the way it goes I am afraid. I applied for my connection beginning of this year. From what I can tell, everyone who uses the Bothasig exchange is going to be a problem. There is nomore space left.

And the chances of Telkom upgrading or building a new exchange is slim to none. :(
