I however agree with Ghoti.

Campaigning is a tool to utilise in obtaining votes, use the available tools.

Mods can vote as long as they are nominated as moderators, employees on the other hand, no.

Did all the people in this competition campaign for votes or only one or two? It's a bit more fair if everyone is aware that they can campaign and others are doing so, but it's really not that kind of competition. The best thread should be the most informative, not the one best campaigned for...

Im sure not everyone thought of it. Not everyone is that proactive. So lets punish the proactive ones?

I dont have a horse in the race, so either way, I dont care. I just think this is a common thing to do in these competitions and was not against the rules. I also have a bad taste in my mouth that rules are changed when it suits some.

Thats it, Im out of this thread. Im not going to spend the next 100 posts arguing this point of view. I have said my say.
 
I still think a random draw is the correct approach. If the drawn thread is decided to be non-helpful by the mods, then, the next random drawn thread is evaluated. Rinse and repeat. The problem is the people that registered on the competition date :erm:

Go through the list of voters. Anyone who registered in the past 2-3 months or has a post count < 100 should have his/her vote disqualified.
 
The original competition stated that it will be the most useful and informative thread. I can't see that anyone without a vested interest would argue against the principle that the thread should win according to merit and not by popularity of the poster.

I would make it random, or let someone that you know won't cheat, like RPM, choose the winner.

I guess if you want to change the rules to suite this then go ahead. But this was not in the rules and is very common in competitions. Im sure the people who didnt think of campaigning are going to be happy with the sudden changes in the rules.

You're arguing that it's ok to be unscrupulous because everyone does it. That's not right.

I comment on many things I have no vested interest in. I dont do consoles thanks. Im a real gamer. I have a high performance PC.

You must have a morality panic attack every time there is an SMS Idols vote. Where people campaign like its a presidential campaign.

Idols is and have always been a popularity contest -this wasn't supposed to be.
Edit: On that note, that last idol winner is a shocker. I think his mom took out a million rand loan and started sms'ing those votes via an infinite loop.
 
The campaigning for votes issue pops up every time there is a comp of this nature (votes decide the winner), last year we had the photo comp fiasco (very similar to this).

My view on campaigning for votes is that it's fine if kept within the boundaries of myBB, let each of the shortlisted participants have their say as to why their thread is the best, after all the thread was created for the benefit of the myBB community. Campaigning for votes outside myBB and a sudden influx of one-off voters doesn't add any value to the forum (if it was an election that would be considered election fraud - hey, it's election year okay :p)

In general I know RPM has asked for input into comps in the future, but frankly I think the whole comp mechanism needs to be reviewed. I'm getting to a point of not even participating in comps anymore because of all the issues and controversy every time a half decent comp is run, and I've given up on the click through comps as well.
 
Sometimes campaigning can backfire too. When I got the PM from biometrics asking me to vote for him, I viewed it as spam and specifically didn't vote for him.

Surely campaining for votes is against the instruction here? It should be okay to campaign for people -to- vote, but not to vote for your specific entry.

Or, just give it to the guy in third place. ( Full disclosure, that's me )
