Can I cancel WIndows 10 Upgrade?

HO Just called me, her PC is upgrading itself (although I know she must have pressed a button) , black screen saying Upgrading Windows..... 12% Copying files 47% ....

Can I stop this.... by holding the power button and switching of her machine?

Urgent! Help! ThanksQ
 
This box was possibly ticked and it was set to download and install the updates at a certain time:

But sorry, do not know the answer to your question, just the probable cause.

Thanks..... I have a strong urge to press the power button, but have a shred suspicion, it will cause me a bigger headache...

Don't press the power button. Let it do the upgrade.

Once done, you will then be able to roll back to previous operating system.

Killing it now will indeed induce a great big headache!

If you’ve upgraded a PC to Windows 10 — not performed a clean install, but an upgrade — you’ll have an easy option that lets you revert to the last version of Windows. To access this, open the Start menu and select Settings. Click the “Update & security” icon and select “Recovery.”

You should see a “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option. Click the Get started button to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows install. Microsoft will ask you why you want to go back

Let it finish and activate. That way you get a machine licence in case you want it one day. Then roll back. But don't pull the power halfway through an OS install especially if it's an upgrade.
 
Everything will still work, possibly better than it does now, and the machine will most likely be a little faster in general. But as soon as it's finished installing, you can buy into all the hype about how bad Windows 10 is and simply roll it back to whatever you had previously.
 
It can happen again unless you learn how to prevent it, good luck!

You mean like upgrading to windows 10 when you don't want to?

I find that my wife sometimes clicks buttons just to get them out of the way. This has led to some interesting conversations - after which she was told she is not responsible enough to own a windows machine - went down like a sack of bricks. She tried Linux, but it didn't work for her. Now she is back on Windows, but user account only - no admin access. And it has been going well thus far.

You are a brave fellow.

Linux not immune either - one of my friends Network Manager was bricked by an auto-update - hosed his internet :D - fortunately nothing that a quick Google and a touch of sudo pico / apt-get couldn't fix.

What's bad about Windows 10?
 
I just hope you have uncapped broadband, because the download of the 3 Gig software file can be rather costly with the OOB shark at the end of the month. :erm:
 
Upgrade, she is finished and the English HO is happy, it looks generally the same and she was smiling when on the pre boot screen W10 told her not to worry, that all her files would still be where she left them.....

It is able to download 3GB image, then there is no message that "something went wrong", but file is deleted, ten minutes later it starts download again. It happens 3 times a day, then stops. Not for long, next day the same repeats. 10GB per day.
