Cell C & Steam?

I can't get on at all anymore. Either steam login blocks me, or cannot connect to an actual game.

Unrestricted APN fixed it!

Sorry for replying only now, but the Unrestricted APN access fixed my problem. Although my latency is still not satisfactory steam stopped giving me errors, and logs me in immediately, to those having steam problems I would recommend getting UAPN and just give it an try.

Thanks for the feedback. Has latency been an issue before UAPN? ^DM

Latency Issues

Yes unfortunately, the latency I get from CellC at the same spot of the previous provider is easily up with 90-100, which sucks a lot. I however did contact Cell C and they said they will assess the situation as see if they could help me. One of those signal amplifiers would be awesome haha. I will give them a week or two to conduct their studies. if you could check up on it, it would be great. Othewise regarding the steam, if you got UAPN, the steam errors should be non existant for loggin in.

Wow I would have loved to have discovered this post 6 months ago, I have been through a lot of trouble to find a solution for this and knew nothing about unlimited APNs :/

Anyway I want to just state how I manage to fix it (In case anyone is looking for an alternative solution):

What I eventually learnt is steam "blocks" certain Cell C IP addresses

I connect to the internet using my phone as a wifi hotspot, and everytime you switch your phone off and back on, Cell C will assign you a new IP address. So basically all you need is a "good" Cell C IP address. So you keep changing your IP address until DOTA works, and then you will have no problems until the IP address changes again.

An easy way to change your IP address using your phone, is just put it on flight mode and off again.
Now if you were using a dongle, I am not sure if it is possible to change it? or what the easiest way to change it is?

http://www.whatsmyip.org/ --> you can use this site to check if your IP address is changed

........................................................................................................................................................
PS. A good way to check if you will connect to a DOTA game is to click on the place where you select the region to find a match in, for instance where you select "South Africa." This place usually shows your ping for every server location, but if this problem is occuring then each one will just show "unknown." I always check it before I start a game, in case it won't let me connect.

I still have to do this pretty often though, I put my phone onto Flight mode and back to get it working. So I was wondering if this UAPN is a better solution and if this UAPN would slow your internet down? and what exactly is unlimited APN?

Now I am just curious why this happens? Could anyone explain it to me?

I have called Cell C, Samsung and talked to steam support about it and all of them just blamed steam with no real answers or solutions.
Yes steam blamed steam too, Steam support basically told me "Sorry we do not support Mobile connections" and wouldn't try help me whatsoever.
Which by the way I think that is illegal as per the South African Consumers Act as we buy games from steam, and nowhere does it tell you hey if you connect with your phone then you are wasting your money...

So now I am wondering, why would steam not work for certain Cell C IP addresses?

As far as legality goes, I don't think you can take this very far. Simply, because they're based in America - the CPA doesn't apply to them. They probably also have these types of things covered in their TOS. With regards to your actual problem, why not try a different provider?

It is more a question of curiousity, I have a solution that I am fine with anyway.

Vodacom doesn't work where I am, and MTN and Virgin Mobile are super super slow
Telkom says there is "too much cable theft in the area" so I can't get a cabled internet.

With Cell C I get speeds of 8-10 mbps Which means DOTA I can play on EU servers in DOTA easy and lag free.
That is why I am stubborn to stay with Cell C lol

I think he's right about the IP addresses being assigned, some work, some don't.
PS. unrestricted APN, can make things even faster. Whenever I do UAPN, my dl speeds can reach up to 900 kb/s

Cell C Wireless internet - Gaming Issues

Not sure if this is just happening to me but here it is....

I took out a 12 month contract with Cell C on the Huawei mobile wifi router purely because we cannot get fixed lines where we stay. My internet speeds is very good. I mainly got the router for online gaming ( Counter strike: Global Offensive ). Now for some reason I am struggling firstly to connect to the Steam server. This takes on average 8 Login in attempts before it is accepted, secondly once I am in the steam client it does not find any Counter strike Servers for me to join. I then unplug my router, reset it, plug it back in and try launching the steam client again. This takes on averages 6 cycles. I have been struggling for the last 3 hours to connect but it is just not happening. Cell C said they granted me unrestricted APN access but the issue is still persisting. If I cant connect to these servers then me having this device is pretty pointless because I only use it for gaming. Now I am stuck with a 12 month contrac

Has anyone experienced the same issue or know how this can be reloved?

Your feedback would be most helpful.
Thanks

Cell C for gaming, that doesn't compute....
What speed is "very good"? Do a speed test, top right on Mybroadband is a link, and post result...

Cannot connect to Steam / Game servers

I mostly use my Cell C sim for updating my games, since 905 of the time i cannot see any servers with it. What is really getting annoying now is that most of the time I cannot even log into Steam to do the updates. What I have seen, once I struggle to log into Steam on the first attempt, even if I are able to log in after trying, I won't be able to find any servers on my games.

I would like to know if there is some workaround to getting Cell C to log into Steam without issues. This happens even if I have a full signal with decent data throughput so that is not the problem

Now I just need to figure out where to request this unrestricted APN and if they have ever even given it to someone

Anyone having difficulties logging onto Steam when using Cell C?

I primarily use ADSL, but my router also has a 3G auto-fallback function. When connecting to Steam via ADSL, everything works fine. When I try to do the same with my 3G connection (Cell C), I get the "Can't connect to the steam servers. Please try again later" error when booting up Steam.

If I'm already connected to Steam via ADSL, and I then make the switch to 3G, Steam is able to reconnect . But the moment it needs to be started from scratch, it gives the error message.

Has this happened to anyone else?
