Cellphone masts: health debate continues

This boils down to physics, and the laws of physics are pretty clear: you are exposed to more radiation from your cellphone than you are from a cellphone tower.

Might be true, but but if you boil it down to Maths, continuous exposure to lower radiation (from tower) over a prolonged period of time can can add up to be more hazardous then short exposure to higher radiation (from cellphone) during an average call

Do the people who complain own cellphones? I can only presume not...

Got to be the dumbest thing you have said here.
I own one and I am convinced they are bad for you.
Same as eating fast food.
Same as drinking
Same as driving too fast.
Same as doing anything that may be bad for you but you do it anyway. Drugs, cigarettes, junk food, etc etc etc

I am pretty sure we can find something more daft than that. :D

It could well be, I'm not sure myself - But the bottom line is, how can people use cellphones, and then fight against the construction of the very technology that enables them to use the phone?

If individual people did these things, and then fought against them legally, I'd also find it a bit silly.

Yup, almost the same as what was said about smoking in the 40's and 50's
Actually not, people knew in the 50s already that smoking was fundamentally bad for you it took 10 years to get to the point where advertisers had to change cue.

Mad Men have a wonderful bit on the energy taken by the advertisers in this regard.

Towers are incredibly bad for your health under certain conditions - such as when one falls on you.

I will never believe what industry says about these things as well as anything coming out of cellphone funded "medical" reports.
Then why don't you read the studies that are NOT funded by the 'industry'? There are thousands.

I believe that these things are dangerous. Do I have proof? Of course not.
You should try science one day. It's amazing what it taught us up to now. Without any need to 'believe' stuff. Like the earth is 6000 years old and is flat.

Do I stop using a cellphone? Of course not.
Making you a bit of a hypocrite, don't you think?

But I still believe that living next to a tower transmitting these signals cannot be harmless.
Do give reading the studies a bash. It's really incredible, this thing called "knowledge". ;)

There is a huge difference between the 40's and today.

It's this little thing called the 'Internet' and the unlimited power it gives people to distribute information without repercussion. If governments and agencies like the NSA cannot keep secrets anymore, do you really think something like this can be suppressed for more than 20 years? With thousands of studies going on around the globe?

Secondly, there are many, many independent studies being done. Just think if you're the first person that can conclusively prove a link? You'd be an overnight international celebrity. Thousands of scientists would love to achieve this. Think of all the grants you'll get. Let alone a Nobel prize or two.

That's why I always implore the likes of Karl Muller and Dorney to publish the conclusive proof they have. Not only would it make them incredibly famous but it would put South Africa on the map internationally.

Yet, for some undisclosed reason, they flatly refuse to publish their research and conclusive proof they so often claim (in the case of Muller, frequently on this forum) they have.

A bit weird that, don't you think?

Which is the only documented case of an actual tower event causing an injury.

Karl Muller did claim (on this forum) that an iBurst tower killed a baby in the mother's womb (you'll find the post here on myBB) but so far have refused to publish his proof for his claim.

Hey, if you're willing to pay me a load of cash to paint your house with some special paint, who am I to disagree! :D

I am sure cell masts are bad for some peoples health - JvZ haven't you acquired any stress related conditions as a result of cell masts and problems thereat. I am also absolutely certain that an unborn baby will suffer extreme damage if it were to use a cellphone - not least because of the trauma involved in acquisition.

Without digging up the "science" a couple of things we do have reasonable medical certainty on:
Cellphones kill thousands of people when combined with motorcars. Cellphones and driving is therefore contraindicated.
High amounts of cellphones use can result in a feeling of pain in the hands or strain on the arms or shoulders. If you find discomfort with the manner in which you are using your phone change your habits.
Cellphones are implicated in undermining a users reputation when combined with high amounts of alcohol. Cellphone usage when under the influence is therefore contraindicated.
Cellphones and bathtubs, toilets and swimming pools are implicated in a great many heartaches. Cellphone handling by toddlers and puppies is generally discouraged and all cellphones (including those with waterproofing) are contraindicated against being misplaced in a toilet - at a best case scenario the owner of said phone will have a great sense of discomfort at having to fish the device out of the toilet.

In essence the mechanics are fairly certain. Masts can be brought down by natural disasters and just like any other physical object can cause damage. Cellphones require user to press buttons and hold them at their ears you can strain your hands and damage your ears if you are a nanna but the same can be said for a yoyo. In fact the extent to which cellphone manufacturers have imposed nanny features (volume limits etc ...) is bloody annoying. Cellphones don't intend being ergonomic but nor are laptops or keyboards chairs until people need them to be. Speaking of laptops the evidence is pretty conclusive that the heat generation makes usage by a male on their lap is not advisable from a fertility point of view - that doesn't change the fact that I am using a laptop while sitting on a non-ergonomic couch so the laptop is well on my lap. O and I am sitting at what is most certainly not an optimal distance from the television. In all cases if I get uncomfortable I will change where I am - laptop gets warm it goes on the siderest, eyes get sore I will change where I sit. Couch gets uncomfortable I'll change how I sit - the same applies to using your bloody cellphone and iPad etc ...

I do believe - based on my limited reading of the reports that have surfaced - that it is not a good idea to talk on your cellphone without using its speakerphone or headset for more than 4 hours of the day. However my gut tells me that you'll be seeing the physio within a week for shoulder pain - so the real problem is a person using pain killers etc ... to adopt an unhealthy lifestyle.

"I’ve been living here for 15 years and no one greets you anyway"

Well isnt that a crying shame?

Then why don't you read the studies that are NOT funded by the 'industry'? There are thousands.
Are there now?

You should try science one day. It's amazing what it taught us up to now. Without any need to 'believe' stuff. Like the earth is 6000 years old and is flat.
Science has been wrong before, you do know that dont you? You mean the Earth is not flat?

Making you a bit of a hypocrite, don't you think?
Why? We do things every day that WE KNOW for fact are bad for us but we do them not because we want to, but because thats the way life is. You think I chose to have my phone glued to my head? No I do it because work dictates it. Oh no wait why dont I just go and live in the bush under a tree, then I will not need a phone or TV or communication at all. Why didnt I think of this before????

100 families only raised R40 000? That's R400 per family, for people living in R2.5M houses...tsk tsk

Ask yourself: Would you want to live next to a transmission tower?

To me, the answer is no. I'm sure many others feel the same.

So in that regard I sympathise with these people and hope they set a legal precedent.

Radiation exposure is very subtle since the effects can only be measured over a period of 10s of years. I certainly wouldn't want to be the guinea pig.

Everything kills you. Why - excessive exposure to Dyhirogen Monoxide is fatal. Yet our bodies actually require regular doses of it to survive.
Would I want a cellphone mast next to my house? Hell no - ugly things, even the freaky tree shaped ones.
But is it dangerous? We are still open on that one. But the reasoning and the actions the guy took? Please - His son started teething at two months and he had two growths in his arm. The poor wife - I hope the kid is bottle fed.
