Telkom Do 1 Broadband: R199 (includes 1GB Data, 10GB Local)
Afrihost per GB: R29

Vodacom 1GB: R 289.00

You do the math!

The reason we are comparing it to ADSL is because for many people 3G is the only viable alternative to ADSL.

Unfortunately many people live in new complexes where Telkom has refused to install phone lines, or live in areas where cable theft is rampant to the extent that Telkom refuses to replace stolen copper.

That's not Vodacom's fault or problem now is it? :erm:

Pricing on mobile is a bit steep I agree, but comparing it to adsl because you can only get mobile broadband in your area (because telkom wont install lines there), is a bit silly to say the least. What you are saying is for vodacom to give you their mobile internet offering at a fixed line price because the fixed line provider can't/won't come up with a way to solve the cable theft issue in the said area.

That said, if Vodacom could only come up with a few creative data packages things would seem a bit better for my average 5Gb a month usage.

What I was drawing a comparison to was the percentage of the difference between the charges between fixed line and mobile alternatives and the comparison is similar, unfortunately we are not spoilt for choice and the benefits of 3G mobility is clear

Think further than your nose and dont forget your line rentals. Which is what? R 131 and R 150 i each i think? Not to forget the lan cable you need to use to get your "mobility" right? ;)

oh and ps. As VodacomData said, compare other countries' mobile internet to their fixed line offerings for a change.

oh and ps. As VodacomData said, compare other countries' mobile internet to their fixed line offerings for a change.

For 2GB, the prices are as follows then:
Do1 Broadband: R199
Afrihost GB: R29
Telkom Telephone Rental (if you DONT have one): R131

Total ADSL Cost: R359 for 2 Gigs and 10GB Local.

Vodacom: R389 for 2Gigs.

Now, if you want 4 Gigs, prices are as follows:
Do1 Broadband: R199
Afrihost 3GB: R87
Telkom Telephone Rental (if you DONT have one): R131

Total ADSL Cost: R417 for 4 Gigs and 10GB Local.

Vodacom: R778 for 4Gigs.

And what about your lan cable so that you can use your adsl on your laptop when not at home or the office?

oh wait, are those speeds 3.6mbps? As well as that line rental?

You do the math!

Line Rental included / excluded?

Edited: That is the point - there is no big difference...

Adsl >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3G

Show me adsl 384 that can download at 3.2mbsp speeds. :wtf:

Yes, line rental included - R131 - Read!!

What i meant was 4mb adsl line rental because 384kbps will obviously be "cheaper".

Not a very "equal" comparison you have going. :erm:

For 2GB, the prices are as follows then:
Do1 Broadband: R199 - do level 1 is tailor made for the entry level broadband customer, providing you with Fast DSL (up to 384kbps based on broadband technology)

Afrihost GB: R29

Telkom Telephone Rental (if you DONT have one): R131

Total ADSL Cost: R359 for 2 Gigs and 10GB Local. @ 384kbps

Vodacom: R389 for 2Gigs. @ 3.6Mbps NOT AT A FIXED LOCATION.

And i'll say again, what about your mobility?:confused:

let me make a good chart that looks better, has all the info/etc so you can understand better.

gimme a few mins

And i'll say again, what about your mobility?:confused:

what about reliability

I think you're not getting it are you? The emphasis is on mobility and speed, as for reliability, mine's going perfect thank you very much. :) You're still comparing 384k adsl to the 3.2mbps speeds im getting wherever i go?

LOL - which comes down to the point I raised earlier - Vodacom, when comparing pricing (and also what you get from the deal) to the entry level products supplied by Telkom remains the better option?! I could not believe it at first and thought I missed something...but I did not it seems. Maybe someone will enlighten us with some new knowledge!

Exactly...no amount of charts and comparisons would change the fact that adsl is fixed and hsdpa/3G is mobile.

Vodacom

1GB: R 289.00
2GB: R 389.00
3GB: R 589.00
5GB: R 989.00
10GB: R 1,989.00

Pro's:
3.6 Mbs
Mobile

Cons:
Unreliable
Bad Latency
No Local Bandwidth
If you go over your cap you pay R1000 per GB.

------------------------------------

ADSL - afrihost + Telkom

Do Broadband1: R199
This includes 1GB Cap, 10GB Local AND your ADSL line Rental

Telkom Line Rental: R131
Note: This is only needed if you do not have a land line for voice calls already

Afrihost price per GB: R29

1GB: R 330.00
2GB: R 359.00
3GB: R 388.00
5GB: R 446.00
10GB: R 591.00

and if you ALREADY have a telkom voice line, this will be your totals:

1GB: R 200.00
2GB: R 229.00
3GB: R 258.00
5GB: R 316.00
10GB: R 461.00

Pro's:
Very Reliable
Good Latency
10GB Free Local Bandwidth
Fixed amount to pay every month

Cons:
386kbs
Not Mobile

IMO though, 386kbs ADSL = Vodacom "3.6Mbs"

in any case, 3.6 Mbs is gonna help you fakall if you pay through the nose for tiny caps

Some of us would rather have a stable line that we can count on than an unstable 3G connection which gets no signal in some areas. And when I say areas I don't mean these smaller suburbs in the middle of nowhere, I am referring to the area in Sunninghill where I live. If you are a gamer, the above is not even an option that needs to be thought about either.

I would rather pay for a DO3 bundle than have 3GB of 3G at R200.

Maybe only mobility, as you can get the 4mb line with 5GB's cap from telscum for about the same price as 4GB at Vodacom

So basically,

- If you HAVE to have mobile, or need ONLY 1GB, then get 3G.
- If you need anything more than 1GB, get adsl. you will be saving a LOT of money, get tons of free local, have better latencies and a generally more stable connection with ADSL

for example if you want 3GB, you pay R388 instead of R589 (and if you have a voice line, you only pay R258!)

and the more you use, the wider this gap gets - for 10GB, 3G is almost 4 times the price of ADSL (R2000 vs R591)

Then get your fixed line?
ps. Im a gamer and get latencies of 300ms average with no random dc's. SO im perfectly with the performance and reliability of my connection thank you.

Finally you see some kind of light. Not everyone wants or can sit with a fixed line. If i could afford to have a fixed line (and was interested in torrents etc.) I would obviously get adsl. By afford I mean being at home enough to actually use the line.

The whole question or issue is, when will Vodacom actually bring us something decent/affordable to use? It will never be the same price or cheaper than fixed lines, as in most if not all other countries.

See vodafone prices, and compare them to their fixed line providers and youll see costs are more for mobility than fixed line as well.

To those that like to compare our local broadband offerings to the Uk a quick google gave me this.
http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/

Its depressing but unfortunately our country isn't nearly as well off as theirs and our "uncapped broadband" adsl ISP's can't even keep half decent speeds going on 384k lines.

I find the comparisons guys are drawng between the price of mobile broadband and fixed line alternatives very interesting, It is probably only in SA that we are forced to make this kind of comparisions, the facts are that if you were to go to most places in the world , 3G mobile is way more expensive than the fixed line alternative : Eg .. on Vodafone UK - for £15 monthly you will get 3GB of data on 3G compared to Vodafones Home broadband @ £14 per month excluding line rental for unlimited data usage on an 8Mb line not to mention the additional extra's like phone calls that are included ...... Lucky Brits indeed
article a while back: "Here are the latest uncapped HSDPA packages from the the Moroccan operator Meditel (free modem with 24 month contracts).
0.5Mbps - 199Dh (R179.15), 1.5Mbps - 349Dh (R314.19), 3.5Mbps - 599Dh (R539.25).
http://www.meditel.ma/internetmobile...rnetmobileplus

M1 in Singapore has even better uncapped offers. Free modem rental with 6 month contracts.
512kbps - $22.42 (R108.18), 1800kbps - $38.72 (R186.83), 3600kbps - $69.30 (R334.39)."

at least with these new cables a 1.8Mbps uncapped for R500? or 10GB for R500 and a 30GB for R999 package?

:)

What is cellC going to do with 25Mbps? sell it for R375 a minute?

they will drastically lower their prices, perhaps even uncapped edge for the masses?

I would if I could but I am stuck with Vodacom 3G & iBurst cos my complex is new & Telkom cannot provide a line immediately. ;)

Glad you happy with your 3G for gaming, been there don't that & LAG sucks. Played MW2 with a 3G connection & played with a 4MB line & it's just much smoother & I don't need to empty a clip into someone for him to die....
