You're right!!! Just put my Cell C sim in my old E220 modem and (on EDGE) it never disconnects. I figured since I've been stuck on EDGE for 2 weeks now let me try another modem.
So it looks like these E1820 modems could be causing a lot of the disconnects. I wonder if Cell C know anything about this.
I've been getting frequent disconnects on my Nokia N900. At the end of last year I could go online and it would stay connected for hours. Since the beginning of this year, it disconnects frequently.

Hi

Is the disconnect happening only on Edge or also on 3G Service as well?

It would do them a lot of good to tell us to take our old modems in and swap them out for another one. I've noticed they are using the ZTE modems now. Could that have something to do with it??

Ron I refuse to operate on EGDE, simply because I can't... the disconnects happen when the connection status is showing HSPA+ and WCDMA...

Where: Cape Town - Brackenfell!

Ron, yesterday after the data package fixup all was 100% up until about 10am for me.
Disconnects started again, so far counted 2 times since 10am i have had to disconnect & reconnect.
And 2 times it just disconnected on its own & reconnected.

I have a disconnecting problem too. Mainly the connection will just become unusable every hour or so for about a min or 2. Sometimes it completely dcs but usually it fixes itself and then works perfectly again. I'm in Hillcrest(Durban) area.

I am also still experiencing regular disconnects, the connection seems to stay live, but no data throughput. Works fine after disconnecting and then reconnecting.

This is very frustrating, especially if you are halfway through a big download that does not allow for resuming, couple hundred MBs wasted everytime this happens.

This is in Northcliff, JHB.

very unstable since the "upgrade" in Midrand area.
Last night between 1 am to 6am lost count of the amount of disconnects.
Has worked ok during the day today, only 1 or 2, and then the last half an hour its been like someone at cell c has been flipping an on off switch, its just been so unstable.

I am having the same trouble after the upgrade over the weekend. Disconnects quite often in East London and Durban. Usually a reset of the router (both sites have usb modems in routers) fixes it but only lasts for a couple of hours then needs a reset. Quite frustrating as before this weekend it would usually run for more than a week before needing a reset.

I also seem to be having frequent disconnects lately, and it's starting to get very annoying. It worked much better the first few months. (Cape Town - Parklands / Sunningdale.)

Advice received from Cell C this morning via phone call (at last) & email:

Good Day
You can follow the following steps to configure your modem; you’ll find an attachments with additional steps to follow.

Fix problems with USB DSL/Cable modems

Some usb dsl/cable modems may get disconnected after a little while. A possible reason that could cause this problem is that in windows xp there is an option that allows the computer to turn off a usb device to save power. To disable this option:

1) click start, highlight my computer, right click and select properties and a window will pop up with the system properties
2) click on the hardware tab and press the device manager button
3) expand the universal serial bus controllers
4) Double click on the USB Root Hub.
5)Select the Power Management tab and UNTICK the "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power"

If you have more than one USB Root Hub, then you should apply the steps to each one of them
That's it, you won't need to restart the computer!

This was in response to the constant disconnecting problem.

PS once you reboot those USB settings return to default.
Another trick ive picked up from forum was to run ping for a couple of hours - mine 24hrs.
Not had disconnect since last nite till this morning when i tried balance check.
But do not know if "ping" had any effect imo or if i was just lucky. :s

I doubt that will resolve the problem to be honest with you - this has been ongoing since the upgrades took place on the 7th February 2011 - everything was working superb and lovely - but i will try that trick but i doubt it will solve problems - I have been using my white dongle on another network for months and would have it connected for more than 2 weeks without getting any disconnections.

Thank you Christopher Reddy for going the extra mile to write the guide - will majority of people stuck on edge connectivity (retracting back my statement - he should of included "settings - options - network - select band to force WDCMA

I doubt it as well, as i've used an e220 on this pc without problems & using this usb "hack".
Might be the new hauwei modem, never know.
But always good to share whats been put out there so everyone can try & post there seperate experiences.
Gives CellC a look at results to there "solutions"

In my case definitely seems to be the 3G. It doesn't always do it. Last night I used it for hours with no disconnects. But during the previous day, it seemed I could barely turn my back for 10 minutes and it would be off again. Maybe because there's less other users on at night? Am in Sunningdale/Parklands, Cape Town. Right now, it's been online 21 minutes so far without disconnecting. I'm not sure but I also am getting a vague impression it seems to be more likely when the connection is idle i.e. not actively downloading anything, but that could be coincidence, it could've been day vs night (e.g. less other users on at night). (I've checked the connection settings and it is not set to disconnect on idle though.)

Thx will give this a try. Option seems to be there in Win7 too. Though like other users, this never used to happen. (Nevertheless, 26 minutes online now and counting, so it's not the 'every minute' problem some users are reporting.)
