I must admit, I have never looked at this thread before moving to CI, but the technical feedback from PBCool is awesome.

No sure, but considering all protocols are treated with the same preference on our network ICMP is a decent way to meter network latency and loss.

We always factor in everything between points so the approach is to never rule out any portion of a network, our office is linked to our core network which doesn't include Vumatels last mile.

Out of curiosity I just ran it for a while. just let it sit there running on the pc not doing anything else.

Thanks for that jannie
That ties in with what smokeping is saying pretty much. So a possible issue at the link between vuma and Cisp?

Ahh! That makes more sense. Mac user here ...

This portion is still on the Vumatel network if that's what you mean?

Yeah that edge device of theirs... Its where you plug in isn't it?

Ahhh, thanks :)
So... shall I see if I can replicate loss to that device as well, so we can make a case for them to check the kit over?

Well ICMP to that IP wont give us an indicator of where the loss is happening as they may be dropping a percentage of the ICMP protocol, so an MTR is better which then gives us an indication on the compiling loss where it may be happening.

I has ways apart from ICMP :D

Yeah either way, traffic destined for that IP verses beyond (forward) traffic is treated differently, so monitoring traffic to it vs "through" it might render different results.

s'true. offloaded vs cpu, fast path switching etc...

PBCool - Do you know what the story is with Cool Ideas access to Vumatel aerial fibre in Cape Town?
I was told this morning (after getting the run-around all day yesterday) that there was a problem with Cool Ideas access to the aerial fibre here. They promised it would be sorted out before the end of today. Haven't heard anything yet and still not working:(

Yeah there was a delay on the NNI, it was installed a while ago but not patched from the Aerial side, so it should be up and running tomorrow. The Aerial network uses a different interface to the Vumatel trenched network.

Well, it got you at least this new customer.

I was on Rains LTE package, but when they mucked up my subscription on the transfer to Afrihost, and Afihost were not willing to resolve it, it was a simple choice for me to switch to CI on Fibre -
1.) The constant presence of PBCool on MyBB provides a maximum level of extreme comfort, whilst it seems that only Afrihost and Cell-C seem to try and achieve "some" level of "average" comfort. Don't see any of the other's trying hard at all.
2.) while preparing to move to Fibre I sent PBCool a pm late on a Friday evening, and was only expecting a reply on the Monday (being a non client, and the matter was not something that required any urgent attention), but got a response within 15 mins. If that's the way they treat non-client's, I could only imagine that client's get even better treatment.

My only concern - PBCool needs to take a vacation and as a result, a break from myBB whilst enjoying his holiday (I'm sure we all agree to this). Hope he has been mentoring someone who can step into those shoes and at least half fill them :)

It's only been 3 weeks for me on CI, but it just works....

Became a client yesterday...what a painless experience! :D

50/50 package - speed as expected and stable service.

Overall, Cool Ideas rates 6 out of 5 starts :)

Ok - still not working. Also hasn't stopped Cool Ideas from debiting my bank account :(

Hi there, yes it will be resolved today as mentioned :). I'm happy to credit your account for the few days.
