PBCool - What are the expected fibre ping ranges on OpenServe? I'm based in Port Elizabeth and I'm hearing a lot of chatter about Fibre being around 5ms - 20ms ping. My average has always been 35ms - 60ms when testing to Cape Town or Randburg but 70 or higher when trying to test directly to PE (guessing because of routing).

With DNS set to auto I just get one nameserver, `154.0.1.1`. Not sure if that's possibly related or if there's any others I should try that might help?

Yes that is because there is no local peering fabric in PE, so this depends on which route OS will send your traffic, if it's Cape Town based it should run down the coast line in theory and this "route" takes around 35ms. The same applies to anywhere else in the country, it's all dependent on how OS routes the traffic for you. This isn't something your ISP has control of.

But for instance we have an OS metro link from Cape Town to Plett and the latency there is 13ms.

Hmmm anything I can try on any sides to improve my connections? Whether I ping to Cape Town or JHB I always get in the range of 50ms. Or do I just need to plan my move to Cape Town now?

There's nothing you can do that changes how OS run their layer2.

PBCool, it appears the Octotel packet loss issues in Table View are resolved, at least for now.

The weird high latency to that saix speedtest server still exists though.

Hi PBCool,
I've got a residential client in JHB who's currently with Telkom & Openserve - they've got a 100 Mbps line but started complaining that their connection wasn't very consistent.

I went past and ran a few tests there... (unfortunately didn't save the screenshots) but in a nutshell the ping to local servers was terrible (ave +-130 ms) using speedtest to MTN JHB. Even using their SAIX speedtest yeilded a ping of about 13 ms.

Certain overseas speedtest's timed out.. it was/is really bad.

I told them that they should move from Telkom to you guys (which they're busy trying to do)- question is, will the move resolve this issue or is it an Openserve issue?

Cool, yeah busy with the transit provider to try and resolve the saix part.

Well it's quite easy, we issue you a temp account if you get similar results you know it's a line/OS thing. If not it's an ISP thing.

No updates unfortunately, cool will have a look re SAIX.

Yeah similar thing happened in JHB, basically our return path distance via our London peer vs our local IP transit provider is shorter. So as the packet reaches the SAIX network it returns via London.

To get a better idea of what your actual latency over the fibre is with OpenServe, do a ping test to 155.239.255.250
155.239.255.250 is routed to the BRAS or local exchange for ADSL/FTTH with OS.

It should be considerably lower to 155.239.255.250 vs the rest of your traceroute.

Have you considered trying to get paid peering from saix at a cost lower than your IS transit if possible? If you could get a better price, then you will have a lot less issues to SAIX. I am pretty sure no one in SA gets free peering with saix.

We would need to do this for IS and SAIX, and having some IPT to fall back on is always a nice to have. But we have considered this.

Hi guys

I just had my fiber installed today. Signed up with cool ideas as its been the most recommended for ping to EU. (around 150-160)

I get about 200-210 ping to EU servers, some 240 even. My ADSL gets the same latency as well, and many friends with fiber with RSA web and webafrica get 160ping.

This is not right, I want to cancel seriously. Why should I have fiber if I am not getting the ping I should be?

Anyone else have this issue with the same circumstances as me?

Thank you. That makes sense as well. I do appreciate that you always have the best interest at heart with your network, really enjoy being a customer on it.

Hi

My Package was just added to my client area, but i do not see any place to upgrade it to a higher speed or anything.
Is this not possible via your client area?
Also no usage type display?

Most of the time this is a manual process with the line provider, so please email [email protected] for upgrades, unless you are on vumatel trenched then just go to their portal and order the respective package. And there is no usage display because there is no limit to the usage :)
