Cool Ideas Fixed 5G/4G Feedback Thread

Can one easily upgrade to a higher let's say from 300GB FUP to 450GB FUP on MTN, or do you need a new SIM Card delivered then?

HI there, yes you can just upgrade, you would not need a new Sim card
If going with the Vodacom option, can a Huawei B535-932 router be used? The router is locked to the Vodacom network and was previously used with a contract that expired, and we could keep the router.

Unfortunately this router is not supported, as its not a 5G router.
It may still work, as Vodacom is not enforcing hardware locks as yet, but it may also be locked to 4G.

I would not recommend using this router, however here is the supported router list:

We do also have a promotion on our 5G routers, so it might be something you would be interested in?

@joshuatree: I have tested my Cool Ideas Vodacom SIM in an unlocked 4G Huawei B618s-22d (from Rain) and it does work at a greatly reduced speed. I have also tested that it works in a 4G phone. I unfortunately don't have any locked Vodacom devices to test.

Take a look at the Vodacom coverage map to get a better idea about the 4G/5G performance you can expect. I only have Vodacom 5G Mobile coverage (no Business 5G or any of the 10, 20, 30 or 50Mbps Home 4G coverage) in my suburb. In some of the tests that I did on my CI/Voda SIM I could get up to 20Mbps downloads on 4G on my 4G phone and up to 280Mbps on 5G using my G5TS.

Getting a ZTE G5TS for R750 is a steal (I paid R1500 for mine) and is well worth the price for the speed increase. You should hopefully get many years of reliable service from this router.

Thanks, @CoolEscalator. I placed my order last night.

@CoolEscalator

On the Afrihost 5G website it is quite easy to find all the info on cancellation policies, contract changes, month to month terms etc; but on yours a person seems to have to be a legal expert to understand all those t&c's, or am I looking in the wrong spot?

HI There, Thank you for reaching out.
I believe you are looking at the cancellation section?

You will notice a 5G section at the very bottom, where all the info should be. (https://coolideas.co.za/terms-and-conditions/)
For 5G its a month to month service, since it's a lot easier to manage without a cancellation Notice to an FNO, requiring a Calader month's notice like for Fibre .

There is also more info on the packages here https://coolideas.co.za/5g-packages/

Yep, that is both where I looked.
You guys can really create a more simple to understand and to the point section for this; like at the bottom of the Afrihost 5G page.
Example. If you should cancel, what happens to the 5G R750 router?

Thank you for the suggestions, I will definitely share this internally for considderation.

Regarding your question about the router, it is yours to keep, same as with our Fibre Routers.

And here I was lusting after a Cudy P5 for dual SIM connectivity.

Glad that I included the router in my order.

The discounted 5G router is only available to new signups so it's definitely worth taking up the offer unless you already own one of the other supported models.

If you are unhappy with the CI/Vodacom service in the future you can always switch over to either the CI/MTN or the upcoming CI/Telkom service provided that you have a supported router such as the ZTE G5TS.

If you are planning to keep using 5G for the next four years, the discounted G5TS increases your monthly subscription cost by just R15 which seems like the only sensible choice !

So no router penalty, if you cancel after say after 2 months?
I signed up for one of the CI/Vodacom packages in September last year and it has been one of the best purchases that I have made in the last 10 years. If there are any problems with the CI/Vodacom service you can switch over to one of the CI/MTN or the upcoming CI/Telkom packages.

If you look at the customer feedback in this thread I doubt that you will find anybody that has cancelled the service after 2 months. Most customers have experience with cellular internet services and appear to be very satisfied.

Price wise this seems like the service to beat.

Asked MTN, and apparently on Shesh@600 our 5G 300GB promo extra data is not falling away after 12months, and the service just continues, being 600GB for R459 + R20 itemised billing that can't be removed according to call centre, tried today. A forum member on another thread said this 5G 300GB Promo would fall away after 12months, either way this is a month to month contract, and will see what happens.

Kudus to Cool Ideas offering the ZTE router for R750, have seen it on promo for R499 somewhere else with a prepaid service. I presume one has to activate a service to being able to buy/order the router from either.

Please confirm if any unused data rolls over to the next month?

Thanks.

I don't think that the FUP is currently being applied on the CI/Vodacom packages but I think that it is on the CI/MTN products. There is no rollover as far as I am aware.

You can use the Data Usage menu on the G5TS to check your monthly usage and also to set a threshold (75% consumed etc. ) if necessary.
