Direct x10 No Choice

i think opengl is for linux rubbish

i dont really care i love and use windows i dont need an open thingie

i just want good games

It's called "progress". Move with the times...evolve. If everyone had this mentality, we would all still be sitting with Win98.

Well if Windows 98 wasn't designed with inbuilt obsolescence (it becomes unstable once the processor hits the ~800mhz mark), I'd still be using it with a smile on my face.

So will Doom3 run on my PC if DirectX is
uninstalled/disabled?

I've never installed it but it should.

Opengl is platform independent, so not just linux. Some of us prefer not to be locked in to microsoft's desire to increase their bottom line.

Good games do not require directx.

Some people prefer to think through their decisions and weigh up the pros and cons, not just do what microsoft tells them.

AFIAK, OpenGL drivers is generally included with your graphics card drivers.

The problem we have is that we play BattleField (2 & 2142) online. Which we can't play on Linux because their isn't a working Punkbuster for Linux yet.

And after numourous emails, petitions and all round begging their still isn't a working version.

So I ask you..... why should we change if we can't play the game we want to play.

So does World of Warcraft use OpenGL? That would almost universally be considered a good game right?

scart its not just bf 2 man its like every game just about doesnt work on linux

linux is free which is why its development goes so slowly

it plays catch up to microsoft purely because micrsoft is a billion dolla company

the reason they make so much cash is because they make computers work and work well

also you dont have to be a rocket scientist to use their OS

Okay fine...Windows Vista is coming out...and alot of people are excited...all fair and well...

...but then you get people like me who is more than happy with XP...but if Micro$oft wants to be an a$$ and drop Direct x10 / Service Pack 3 for XP just to force people to change to Vista then I really get pissed off

P.S. I've heard the Direct X9.L Rumors

There is always ways.... Keep your ears to the ground

True....so what happens when EA releases the new Crysis title or any other DX10 game.... ???? pop in the disc on my current configuration and a error pops up "This game requires Windows Vista" :(

It's going to be a few years before games stop supporting DX9. Game devs aren't stupid, there's a reason why games are generally designed in a way so that a pc that's 3 years old meets the minimum specs. :)

All i see is more pretty frills taking up my memory and another way for microsoft to take what little control i had over my pc away.

Of course. So why buy the marketing crap and pay $$$ to get pretty icons?
If you want a pretty XP you can buy Windows Blinds, it looks even better than
Vista. Anyhow, Vista is all about marketing. It's new, it has pretty graphics,
it MUST be good. The fact is that it's SLOWER than XP. Tom's Hardware
did a comparison, and found that games and applications run slower although
Explorer may seem a little faster, all your applications are actually worse of.
Stay with XP for as long as possible. When you buy a new machine, the
OS bundled with it will be Vista anyhow.

The only reason to use Vista atm is to watch HD-DVD on it. So you
need an HDCP mobo, video card, OS (Vista) and monitor (1920by1200 res and up and HDCP capable going at R8.000 for the Dell 24 inch and up)
and then you need the actual HD-DVD drive, which no-one here sells
anyhow yet.

Vista is just another money maker for M$. M$ could have ported DirectX10 to
WinXP but they don't want to invest a few bucks in that. They want to use your love for DX10 games as reason (only reason other than HD-DVD) to
upgrade to Vista. Now why would anyone want to give money to a company with such ethics?

MS will force most developers to use ONLY DX10. Simple.

MS is not playing fair. Why give money to them?
