Doom Eternal

Isn't resetera that place that drives their agendas by harassing developers?

Yup, that's them. I usually loathe to use anything from them (as they are so identity politics driven), but they did consolidate the bits of info that were available elswehere fairly concisely.

Mick's Twitter and YT comments are legit however and do indicate that something went a bit awry between his original vision for the tracks and marketing/sound engineering.

Seems he only did 11 on his own out of the 59-something

I see PCG is catching on

Gordon responded, offering an explanation: he didn't mix that track. Apparently the composer mixed a "small handful" of them, which haven't been compressed.

He doesn't sound too impressed, suggesting that he wasn't involved in the decision. Following this, a fan allegedly reached out to the composer on Instagram, which they shared on Reddit, asking if he'd work with id on future Dooms. "Doubt we'll work together again," he said.

I reached out to Gordon to get more details on the mix and his relationship with id and Bethesda.

"I take a lot of pride in my work," Gordon told me. "It’s all I do, it’s all I have and I pour my heart and soul into it." He added that he's still trying to understand the situation himself and has no further comments at this time.

Nice. Changed my steam review to negative. Well done bethesda... well done...

I knew something was up when they had that rap-backed TV spot commercial.

I've been spending some time on the DE forums this last week. They are super quick to reply and censor users posts on the MG topic, but leave actual suggestions/bug complaints unanswered.

Proof, yet again, that Bethesda are poison.

This Mick Gordon debacle is an odd case. Suddenly, every social media commentator is an audiophile. As it stands it is only the OST, but when you read what the commentators have to say, many have noticed it in-game which isn’t the case. Ignoring that the OSTs are compressed, Gordon did mix those he has mentioned.

A refund would be a good start to reward them, but I can't see that happen. There's little to no reason to continue supporting Bethesda. If you couldn't tell with 76 they are quite ****ed, then this should be it.

It's not just the OST its the ingame music as well (from the various things I've read and watched unless they are wrong). It seems if they totally ****ed him over.

Not sure I want to download DE and extract assets, but I'm going to laugh my head off if its also the same level of bs as the ost...

To a certain extent people are ready to jump down Bethesda's throat at the drop of a hat, because of their past debacles so at least part of the controversy can be attributed to that, however I disagree re the audiophile comment.

A large factor in Doom 2016's success was its soundtrack, with the expectation being that Eternal would deliver on the goods again because of Gordon's involvement. Secondly the issue of compression and clipping has been the bane of the music industry for years now. While it isn't usually an issue in less complex music (pop, rap, etc) it doesn't take a trained ear to pick up muddy instruments in more complex, layered music like what is present in Eternal. The effect would be very noticeable to most.

Who else don't like the extreme platforming / parkour sections of the game? For me it does not fit into Doom.

I don't mind it, but they could have toned it down a bit as well as not make it as souls like as some areas are which contributed only frustration and not fun. I'm just going to don my cans, put up metal, play dark souls III and forget about this **** for a while...

There were probably about 2 sections in the entire game where I found it as annoying. Otherwise it was something different to do in between murderous rampaging.

The only thing that Mick Gordon has publicly said is this,

the wavelengths posted by thatACDCguy are the two BFG Edition tracks, BFG Edition (Doom 2016) vs BFG Edition (Doom Eternal) side-by-side. BFG Edition on the Doom Eternal OST is remixed and that is what thatACDCguy questioned. Obviously Mick Gordon doesn't like his tracks to be remixed, but we don't know the agreement between the two parties and it would be odd to have the two exact same tracks on both OSTs. Gordon acknowledged that he did Meathook and Command and Control, though both are also compressed.

Then social media exploded with this post,

which was later updated with the Mick Gordon comment update by PC Gamer. Then there is the questionable Reddit conversation which I highly doubt Gordon would have wanted to be public knowledge, a conversation which may very well be mischievously added to the debacle.

Nothing was ever said about the in-game music until people started to make assumptions. There may be now some legalities involved which are the reason why he isn't adding anything to the debate on Twitter anymore.

Have you read the comments, people are suddenly experts on music. The Doom Eternal OST launched yesterday, but 'everyone' seemingly experienced the compression and non-Gordon soundtracks in-game which isn't the case. It is a 'discrepancy' pointed out by thatACDCguy,

thatACDCguy posted his views on Youtube and did a remix,

and as noted, this doesn't apply to the in-game music. People with assumptions are causing Gordon more trouble than it is worth.

Hated it, seemed very out of place, like they where trying to pad the run time.
