i agree with one of the above statements...start an email campaign ... the more people know about it the better... BTW i don't have dstv would rather spend that money on getting internet ...

Clearly there is problem in the South African way of thinking. Particulary those who have the money to flush down the toilet. In fact it's the ones with the money that could help make the biggest clout. If only they would take notice and feel that they could make a difference instead of thinking 'Ag, this makes no difference to me'.

Whether it's taking the time to make plackards or whether it means waking up early to go out into the cold to demonstrate. The very concept of a protest implies that there is goint to be some self sacrifice. No TV for a month. A very interesting concept. How would you survive? (More family time, healthier eating at the table, going to bed earlier, more time for constructive activites, giving the pets more attention, more time for reflection, contemplation and meditation, excercise, exploring the great outdoors; to name a few benefits) Here's an oppertunity to find out and to be doing something proactive at the same time.

A lot of people on this forum seem to openly admit that they're mindless zombies helplessly bending to the will of Multichoice and their 'programming' without even considering the power in their own hands as the consumer. This is a mindset that needs to be obliterated. Stop a moment and think about it. Yes it's a great service (compared to anything else out there) but do we need to be overcharged for it?

So you miss out on the rugby (only for one month). Again, why let the corporation control you. What difference will it make to your life whether you watch the rugby or not? Think about it. The truth is: Nothing! It wont make any difference in your life's purpose. So lets make Multichoice aware of that.

I say we go for it. It does not matter how many people cancel their subscripton this time round. But for all that will be cancelling in April, it will be a great start. This can be the first time this year and we can arrange to do it again at later time if need be (hopefully being even more organised).

I applaud the creator of this thread. It just takes a little action to get the ball rolling. I will create and e-mail copying the text from the original post, modifying it slightly and adding the proposed increases to the text to circulate across the country. On that note I would like to mention that this would not constitute SPAM as mentioned in jest above. This is a serious appeal to all consumers in South Africa to realise that the corporations need us (not the other way around) and that we need to start acting with our wallets...

This thread proves what we have all known all along: its the sports fiends that are being used to manipulate us all. The entire strategy of MC's channel layout is based on tens of thousands of sports fiends being totally addicted to any programme with anything vaguely spherical bouncing around whilst roid ravaged hardmen make homoerotic with one another in its midst.
Why do you think the premium package contains utter cr@p apart from sports?
How do you think they could kill the Sci-Fi channel just like that?
Simple: because this country grinds to a standstill the moment you mention any sports... its pathetic really and the entire MC debacle is a symptom of it.

I tell you what why do the people who not enjoy sport go on strike and cancel for good, then dstv will put our premiums up again because they are losing money on all the cancellations.

Nobody gets how economics in this country works!!! You guys cancel and the people who did not will start paying more, then when all the strikers want to get reconnected they will be charing to reconnect and pay more every month dstv. So by all means go ahead and strike so dstv can put their prices up again because they are losing business. Losing business in this country never ends with lower pricing.

I already canceled in 2006. Not planning on re-activating permanantly. We only connect for the month of December and catch up on everything DSTV has to show in that one month of the year. :)

I take it that you did not play much sports as a young person at school, maybe captain off the chess team.

I would love to subscribe for supersport channels only, but we cannot do that. I for one cannot miss a weekend of rugby, infact thats the only reason i subscribed to DSTV, infact the more i type my post the more your post makes sense.;)

I disagree. If they do that we simply stop completely until they get reasonable. Who do you think is more dependent on who, us consumers on dstv or dstv on its consumers?

i TOTALLy AGREE!!...

We've had DSTV for just under a year now and i doubt we have even watched on full hour of sport, my dad watches ESPN but i cannot classify that as sport, Rugby is sport (which should be called moer mekaar)

Selling your soul for sport. That's just sad :o

You don't have to disconnect. Just deactivate for the month, and then reactivate after the period. Have done this before. You don't pay for the month it was deactivated. They do ask for how long you would like to deactivate, but I've stated previously that it would be indefinite.

Interesting idea, I do hope it works, but I have to be honest and say that I seriously doubt that anything would come of this. Multichoice is a big company and probably wont even notice a few thousand deactivated accounts. I am going to be different and say that multichoice has done amazing things for SA TV, I don't want to rely on SABC or worse telkom media to bring me shows, sports and miniseries. Just look on the front page of myBB to see what those monkeys are up to just converting from analogue to digital (http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Telecoms/7028.html). MC is on the forefront of HD broadcasting and quality shows in SA and it is coming in a small price increase (R30).

At the same time you should have a legal beagle question them about the re-activation fee, which sounds ridiculously high. That might attract attention to this from a media perspective for both legal and consumer activism reasons. There are ways to play this in the media to your advantage.

WRT them possibly lowering prices to maintain subscribers - there is no way they would do this - it is never in a comany's best interest. They plan for a dilution of customers and plot it on a graph - they then search for an equilibrium. They don't mind losing a few customers if the margins increase and profit remains the same. However they wouldn't want to decrease margins for the sake of profit remaining stagnant. The loss of a few subscribers for the sake of the bottom line is justified by the fact that those same lost subscribers become potential customers again and the market is just slightly larger. They can then make more money off the subscribers once they can afford DSTV again and reactivate their accounts. After all, they've got he hardware already and to many a subscriber it seems a waste. So they'll sacrifice in other areas to be able to afford DSTV again. It's a win-win for DSTV. However lowering their margins is not a win for them in the least little bit...
