So this is the story.I went to my girlfriends house yesterday and then she told me her dvd rom isn't opening so i take a look at it and indeed it refused to open not even a little so i decide to use the small pin hole opening on the dvd rom to force the tray open. This worked a little ,i managed to get the tray to move just a little bit so Afta some pulling and pushing it finally opened and to my surprise i saw that the dvd had... Wait for it wait for it... SHATTERED INSIDE!!!.I have heard about this happening but very rarely though. The dvd rom is still working but unfortunatly for the dvd no amount of glue will hell the poor fella. The funeral for the dvd will start at 11.

Yeah, it happened to me too once - the disk just disintegrated in the drive. Nobody believed me since Mythbusters tested spinning a CD with a high powered drill and nothing happened....

Wow - I've also heard of stories about cd's shattering but have never seen it in real life.

Pics or it didn't happen :)

Nah, it happens. Old or damaged discs are particularly vulnerable.

yeah i also watched that episode. If i remember correctly the eventually did get the cd to shatter.I neva thought that i would actually see something like that.

I'm actually suprised that the drive still works. Both times I've seen this, the drive was damaged beyond repair. And it makes a lot of noise, how did she not hear it?

yeah it happened to me a few years ago. Normally the older damaged disks are affected. My dvd writer seemed to work fine after that.

A CD of mine also exploded in my old cd-rom... It was a genuine "explosion" with a hell of a bang. :D

What brand DVD ROM?

I had a funny experience with my Lite-On DVD R/W. Stopped working after about 2 years (wouldn't read disks). Rebooted, installed new firmware etc. and still nothing. Week later it starts working again? :D

I had a 56x cd rw back in the day and it shattered my win me cd when i tried to reinstall it a few years ago. maybe thats why most dvd writers and cd writers are limiting their read speeds to 48x and 52x these past few years.

one evening on my way out i had to burn a quik cd, after inserting the disc the drive spun up and it sounded like a helicopter landing, i panicked and just pulled the mains thinkin **** this i can deal with it in the morning

so next day it turns out i had 2 blank discs in the tray instead of one . . . stupid spindle :D

drive was fine though

+100000000

Stupid Mythbusters:mad:

Optical storage media shattering in a drive ... what a load of hogwash. A drive could not generate the centrifugal or mechanical forces to disintegrate the optical grade polycarbonate a disc is moulded from. If indeed this happened, the disc was damaged before it was inserted in the drive.
