E-toll Bill debate postponed

The Democratic Alliance, the official opposition, has welcomed the postponement of the debate on the controversial e-tolling bill in the National Council of Provinces.

The Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill will pave the way for users to be charged electronically to use roads in and around Gauteng.

In a statement, the DA says members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Select Committee on Public Services received notification this afternoon via SMS and e-mail informing them of the postponement of the debate and vote until “further notice”. No reason was provided, it says.

The postponement of the debate follows a letter sent last week DA member Herman Groenewald to the Chairperson of the NCOP, Mninwa Mahlangu, expressing his concerns with procedures followed during the deliberation on the Bill in the Select Committee on Public Service.

He requested that the Bill be referred back to the committee for further deliberations and to allow for extensive public submissions.

The DA has previously claimed that the Bill was being rushed through the legislative process and that the correct procedures were not being followed.

Transport spokesman Tiyani Rikhotso was not immediately available.

DA welcomes postponement of e-Tolls Bill debate

The DA welcomes the postponement of the debate on the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill (e-Tolls Bill). The ANC is now presented with the perfect opportunity to withdraw the Bill in its entirety.

Members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Select Committee on Public Services received notification this afternoon via SMS and email informing them of the postponement of the debate and vote until ‘further notice'. No reason was provided.

The postponement of the debate follows a letter sent last week by my colleague Herman Groenewald to the Chairperson of the NCOP, Mninwa Mahlangu, expressing his concerns with procedures followed during the deliberation on the Bill in the Select Committee on Public Service. He requested that the Bill be referred back to the Committee for further deliberations and to allow for extensive public submissions.

We trust that this postponement will allow for the DA's request to be actioned by the Chairperson.

We remain vehemently opposed to the Bill as it would create the world's most expensive toll collection system, undermine economic growth and ultimately result in job losses. We will continue to fight against the Bill being rushed through the NCOP to the detriment of South Africans.

Quite right, the ANC with all their fxckups in GP, don't want to piss off their voters even more, lets also not forget that Cosatu is making the ANC 'sleep on the couch' on this issue.

I also have a faint sneaky suspicion that the ANC is genuinely concerned that there will be overwhelming civil disobedience in this, and then they will appear 'weak' as 'their' citizens are standing up against them. I guess i'm trying to say that the ANC is scared that the 'sheep' is rising up against them, and seeing as they are trying to force this on the 'tax-paying' citizens, they have quickly become aware of what this could do to them

The DA had asked for discussion on the bill to be delayed, but there is no indication that this delay is because of their request.
The article clearly says that NO REASON was given for the delay.

Go back and read it again, slower this time, paying close attention.
Try not to mouth the words as you read, but ask yourself inside your head what the words mean.
Use a dictionary if it will help, or ask someone who is smarter than you (basically anybody standing close by).
