Earth Hour - join the movement...

Has this ever happened before?

I think people are losing sight here. The aim is not to save electricity. The aim is to get global buy-in; support for the petition (which is why you need to sign up) that will be presented at the Copenhagen '09 conference, at which the world leaders will be making decisions on emissions policies. What is decided here will replace the Kyoto Protocol. Earth Hour this year is about voting for them to have more stringent policies in place.

They had the aim on one billion supporters for the movement, which I think has been far surpassed. Switching off your lights for an hour won't make much of a difference. What it does do (and you need to register too), is show that there are people who want change in the world. That there are people who care about the effects of climate change, and want policymakers to force a change for the better.

Earth hour happens every year. Or it has since 2007, anyway. And it will happen again next year. Read my post above about why they're making such a big deal about it this year.

I want to change the world, I would love to do alot of things, but doing it for what... 1 hour a year is going to do what exactly?

It's something that we need to do all the time!

There is too much hypocracy with this sorta thing - like, 1 of the people will say they will go home and turn their power off for a hour, yet they run a business that stays on all weekend or those people who want to save the planet by lowering their carbon whatever but bloody drive everywhere (instead of cycling or walking etc)

I'm fully aware of what is happening around me, but unless we all start doing something (not for 1 hour a year) - we're just wasting our time and that is honestly THE TRUTH.

And I do my bit wherever possible.

PS: I have about 100 people saying they are going to be in this Earth Hour - last year, I remember the same people completely forgetting and just shrugging it off - more hyprocracy!

Did you read what I wrote? This one little action does not make much of a difference. What it does is show that there are people committed to making a difference. And that will influence the views of the policymakers when they decide on the replacement to the Kyoto Protocol. This will hopefully translate into stricter policies that will be applied, and that is what will make a change.

Another positive that may follow from this is that people woh aren't aware, or who don't really care, will start becoming more aware and will start making the little changes in their lives.
 
Earth hour is about as useful as a hippy weed party to fight the war machine.

I know that... but to most people - it seems that this "Earth Hour" means everything to them - like, if you don't take part in this "Earth Hour", you're failing human kind or something.

I do my bit everyday - talk to me again when you do that ;)

:mad: One hour a year just doesn't do it for me.

On a external site, I've been told to "stop breathing for a hour" to see the importance - :mad: OH GROW UP!

I do my bit everyday. I'm also heading up the team that's forcing change on my huge company. And I convince other people to follow suit. Does that entitle me to talk about this?

I still think you're misunderstanding the point of this hour.
 
Can I ask something basic?

Question - If alot of people do turn off their electricity for an hour, won't it overload the grid when they all rush to turn it back on when the hours over?:confused:
 
Earth Hour 2009 - Turn Off Your Lights

Earth hour of 2009 is about to be observed on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

People around the globe are urged to turn off their light for one hour on March 28 between 8:30 to 9:30 P.M.
Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative, led by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to demonstrate that individual action is important and it adds up to make a big difference in saving our earth from global warming.
To date, a record 900 cities and towns in 75 countries have committed to turn off their lights on March 28 at 8:30 P.M.
This includes Governments, business and individuals turning off their lights for an hour to support action on climate change.
Earth Hour was first held in Sydney, Australia in 2007. The idea took off in 2008, when there were 371 cities involved.
I started observing it from 2008. Even this year we are going to observe the earth hour.
I hope you'll also do your part to our mother earth.

How many threads do we need?

Are you guys switching off your lights because it's trendy, or do you actually know something about global warming?
