Facebook reading WhatsApp messages?

Recently I sent a WhatsApp message to a new contact who has no Facebook connection to me, a friend, or a relative whatsoever.

Today I get that person suggested as a friend on Facebook.

How is it possible that Facebook can make the connection without decrypting the message?

OP.
remember that new update taht was all over the internet a few months ago?
well you gave whatscrap permission to go through your contacts on your phone, and send that detail to facebook, who then saw the new link and sugjested it as a friend.

in 8 months, when you start getting new contacts on whatsapp selling you things, straight up cold calling as legal whatsapp spam smses as we know them now, maybe then people will get feb up and uninstall that POS app.

look into Telegram/Signal OP.

Or just opt out of the data sharing.

They don't read the message but, unless you have opted out, they will share phone numbers. If your phone number is part of your Facebook profile and the person you sent the message to also has their phone number in their Facebook profile it is easy for them to establish the connection and send a friend suggestion.

So when will other people here stop complaining, uninstall whatsapp and force less tech savvy friends to move to Telegram?

The answer is never because no one else has enough of spine to stand up for privacy and do what is right.

Everyone who still uses whatsapp is clearly stupid in my opinion

It's not that.

It is a huge exercise getting technophobes to move on from sms to WhatsApp.

If we now start telling them to switch again, they will lose all faith in the technology.

Or uninformed? Why would my elderly parents care about Facebook harvesting their contact book?

How do you know Telegram doesn't harvest user contacts?

I don't see the major issue here?

Both people have FB Accounts linked to a phone number then there are whatsapp messages between the 2.

FB's systems recognise this and suggest the person as a friend.

WhatsApp has the same e2e as Signal uses (apparently).

Telegram rolled their own crypto, doesn't have e2e encryption by default (you have to start a secret chat). They are Russian, not sure if I'd trust them. Got a mate who works in Infosec and he says he wouldn't touch it.

your parents wont know or care, but you should care for them.

Yes, Whatsapp uses the protocol used in Signal, built by Open Whisper. Telegram uses MTproto which was built by the people who made the app (those brothers who made VK, the RUSSIAN FACEBOOK)

I work in InfoSec too. Telegram is terrible for "privacy".
