For those with Plasmas?

How do you run it in?

I have the 450, 42", all the saleman at the Samsung and Audio vision shops said u don't have to anymore.
Reviews on the net also say u don't.

That's the theory. No need to run them in and I never ran in my PVision nor my 42" Sammy but I noticed IR on the 50" from day one so I set contrast to below 60, brightness to below 50 and dynamic contrast off. Maintained these settings for roughly 200 hours worth of viewing. Despite this, IR remained and I resigned myself to living with the condition.

But watching the 42" and the lack of any such symptoms I thought duck this, this is neither normal or acceptable.

Logged a complaint with Samsung SA online which was a waste of both bandwidth and time as they yet to respond. Went to the tried and tested medium of a public shaming in the form of hellopeter.com. That they respond to.

4 days later they collect my set. (Monday morning). I phone Alex at Advanced Electronics on Wednesday afternoon to find out WTF. He reckons all is normal. I say it is not, have a proper look. He does and agrees this is beyond acceptable parameters. Says either y-scan or panel. I assume he will replace y-scan and if that doesn't solve the problem, new set!!!!! No prizes for guessing which result I'm hoping for...

There's a Samsung brand shop here, hopefully they'll sort things out if there's an issue.
Samsung have a better rep here than LG and Sony, one of the reasons I bought it.

If your set is going to suffer from IR it's normally apparent pretty soon. You can check for it by tuning into Cbeebies on dstv channel 306. Leave it on for 5 minutes and select dynamic settings. After 5 minutes go to your screen burn protection menu and run the scrolling white screen. If your set is prone to IR/screen burn you will see a faint image of that blimming Cbeebies logo. It fades pretty quickly though so don't worry about permanent damage.

If you getting the logo I recommend the running in process. If not probably need not worry. It is prudent though to leave the set off if not in use or paused (obvious)...

Well let us know how it turns out. I get IR, fairly quickly, although it's very very faint, and goes just as quick. I'm around 50 hrs or so. But good luck.

Turns out it's a faulty panel. No idea when I'm getting my set back or replaced. Advanced electronics now waiting for Samsung.... Frustrating...

I'm not sure you should be getting IR quickly Wasp. Does it happen with your contrast and brightness turned down to around 50? Dynamic contrast off... Maybe run it in a bit... It's strange but my 42" Sammy never shows any signs of IR. I'm not convinced that these modern day plasmas should be exhibiting these symptoms...

Good idea to run at low and good idea to monitor it. Definitely seems to be an issue with the 50" screen. I'm not sure that it is acceptable though... I also took the 3 year warranty. It didn't bug me all that much either until I noticed how beautifully the 42" is working.... touch wood...

MAJOR IR , and i did run a break in DVD from AVS Forums for 100hrs , also even tried Pixel Protector but was still getting major IR so I called LG , Tech guys came to pick it up and also confirmed that the IR is too much. Holding thumbs....

Thanks for the updates chaps. I guess the true acid test is if the replacements are better. I'm holding thumbs! I wonder why there are so many variances between sizes and panels, when it comes to IR? It seems very odd. Unless certain components are married from different companies?

Once the text disappears and changes, the trails are gone and appear depending on the position of the text. It is quite difficult to explain though. I'll try and take a photo of it tonight at home. Hopefully it will be noticable in a photo. It isn't IR.

mmm. Sounds like ghosting or perhaps IR... Try leaving the set on Cbeebies for 5 minutes, then access the screen burn protection menu and select scrolling screen. If the Cbeebies logo appears bottom right thats IR... If it doesn't it's probably ghosting..

Example: I was watching the rugby on Saturday and after the match when I switched to a source with no input, I could still see the score bar at the bottom of the screen. I watched some other content for an hour and switched to a black source again and still saw a fainter score bar at the bottom of the screen. The next morning, I checked if any IR was present on screen and there was none.

I'll still need to look at the screen with critical eyes to properly see if IR is visable to the extent of being too much during normal programming. I'd hate for my 3 year warrenty to expire in 3 years time and I hadn't done anything about it.

No IR is acceptable IMHO!!! I had a 42" Pvision before getting Samsung, never had any IR or Screen Burn, never new about running plasmas in so the Pvision wasn't even run in.

Got a 42" Samsung, no signs of IR or screen burn, ran it in for 150-200 Hours. Samsung 50" from day one unacceptable levels of IR. Ran it in for 200 hours made no difference. Even with contrast and brightness at 50 still suffers from IR!!!

Samsungs quality is not nearly as good as we've been led to believe it is IMHO. They using panels I would expect to find on a Logik or Hisense set... A bit disappointing IMHO... And IPMM what will irritate you now is looking for IR. Now that you've seen it you going to forever be aware of it!!! That's annoying...

Damn, I have a B650 and I also get some IR but I thought it was normal. When you watch sport and change the channel the SS2 or SS3 logo is still visible for some time after. I thought it was normal and tried not to let it bother me. Also the media interface. If I leave the set on for five minutes on the media interface and then exit, the faded image stays on for quite a while. Actually it only goes away after watching normal tv. Maybe I should also call them as I would really prefer it if this doesn't happen.

Hell this is getting interesting. Is the "ghosting" been seen, not due to the dual layer of glass? I know if you look from close, at an angle, you will notice a doubling of the image, only really noticeable for logos etc.

The IR issue is getting interesting, especially since Samsung says there should not be any. Hell chaps, keep us posted. Maybe there's a solution for us all. And thanks for the initiative.

@Wasp_21 I cannot imagine that the ghosting is due to the double layer of glass. I noticed the double layer of glass when looking at a very sharp angle. The spread of the "trail" is quite wide so I cannot imagine that it is the double glass, but will keep you guys up-to-date indeed.

Received confirmation today that the PDP panel is to be replaced.

Hoping to have the set back tomorrow..

Me thinks there is a batch of faulty panels out there. Wonder how many other consumers out there are tolerating their IR affected sets???

Seeing these posts I pity that Hitachi has gone out of the Plasma market. Panasonic also has some nice choices. Pioneer no longer makes them. Neither does NEC.
