Forget 4G: 4.5G is here soon

4.5G doesnt exist, so stop moaning about it already!

4G might be here in a few years

LTE WILL be here in the next year or two, if ICASA can wake up.
 
I don't mind what they call it as long as everyone uses the same rules
 
This is all the ITU's fault, for *****footing around the issue, instead of being assertive and sticking to the definitions of 3G and 4G and everything in between. They caved to pressure from the American networks, and now we're stuck in this mess, which looks like it will only get worse.

They need to set things straight once and for all. Redefine the term 4G to include LTE, and officially define 4.5G or 5G to include LTE-Advanced. Then use whatever powers they have to enforce it, by slapping fines/sanctions/whatever or publicly denouncing those who refuse to abide by the definition. Kick those operators and manufacturers out of the ITU who fail to abide by the rules.

Enough *****-footing around. Make a decision, and stick with it, no matter what.
 
A current 21mbps connection with affordable data would be great thanks. Just need to get it right that it works everyone and everyone gets at least 5mbps.
 
SA may well be the last telecoms outpost which actually cares about the ITU’s 4G definition.

Why should we care when we don't have anything resembling 4G?

parhaps they can get HSPA to work with better efficiency rate first... like >2-5Mbps on a "21Mbps" connection?

Many people sprout this same argument - first get the current set of technologies right, then move onto the next one. They don't understand the technical issues regarding spectral efficiency, and how it improves with each new generation of technology. The more spectrally efficient the technology, the better the speeds that EVERYONE will get, especially on an over-crowded base station.

Spectrally efficient technologies mean more users per base station (less spectrum required per user), which results in lower costs for the mobile operator. Base stations can support larger numbers of users, at higher speeds.

So bring on LTE and 4G, even if the current 3G and HSPA+ rollouts are not 100% perfect.
