Frogfoot Port Elizabeth

I'm beginning to think PE is the ugly stepsister of the FrogFoot family. They really don't care that their fibre is so crap in this part of the 'hood.

Packet loss and bad pings back again. @Frogfoot Fibre surely for a leading fibre company you guys can properly identify the issues and resolve them ?

Good Evening

Please see below updates from our technical teams

1. Frogfoot identified loss to Summerstrand node

-- The loss is caused by instability on a backhaul between CPT and PLZ which is dedicated to Summerstrand and does not impact any other services in Port Elizabeth.
-- Loss is present during peak as well as off-peak times, and was escalated t the 3rd party vendor for investigation
-- Peak time loss: Frogfoot in the process of upgrading the capacity. Currently we are unable to confirm an exact ETR for delivery.

2. ISP traffic is handed off in 2 different regions and can expect slightly different latency

-- If ISP traffic from PE region is handed off in CPT, around 10-20ms latency
-- If ISP traffic from PE region is handed off in JHB, around 20-35ms latency
-- Please confirm with your ISP where you should be running tests to in order to get accurate results

There is no general latency or packet loss in Port Elizabeth, If you are experiencing any issues please log a ticket with your ISP to investigate further who will then log a ticket with the Frogfoot support team if required

Yes this clearly shows "There is no general latency or packet loss in Port Elizabeth " , another afrihost runaround starting and blameshift.

It is so disappointing being promised super fast internet and then getting routed via JHB at 30-35ms - which is slower than my VDSL was. My VDSL was 25ms and I never had an issue in over 2 years.

So the question is, why are new customers still being signed up if there are backhaul issues and some regions are being routed via JHB? Does FrogFoot have to get more backhaul capacity to CPT? When is that going to happen?

As a customer, how long is acceptable for us to wait? How long would your CEO wait under the same circumstances?

That packetloss starts as soon as your handed over onto the Afrihost network. @AfriGuy please assist.

This is all you getting from useless afrihost, they completely ignore what you say and just carry on with there own unicorn ideas... Below is what the send out.

I have checked on your line, the packages assigned and the data links and everything seems intact at our end.

Please perform the direct connection test as below and let us know the speeds you are getting now.

Kindly connect your ONT/CPE device ( fibre device mounted on the wall) directly to the PC/Laptop via LAN cable and browse the website login.afrihost.com on the browser to activate the connection and check with the speeds you are getting.

Awaiting your response.

Warm regards

Seems like Afrihost finally acknowledged that they have in issue in Cape Town (where your packet loss starts) according to their status page https://www.afrihost.com/site/network_status

Is anyone on here with Cape Connect? Wanting to sign with them once our area goes live but have a few questions first. Thanks!

So talking about packet loss only without speedtest, except for between 19:20 & 19:50 my fibre connection was mostly good. But when I decided to download a game through epic store I noticed this ... {see pic below}, line goes completely crazy.

Epic games usually creates multiple connections to their content sites, so they are a really good test to see what happens when your line gets saturated with downloads. I am not sure what your network config looks like, but if you have any sort of QoS applied, it may also drop packets at random or as per whatever algo the QoS method applies, once the download buffer gets saturated. Some algos randomly drop packets when the queue length goes over the threshold, others work on a FIFO principle, but there are many others out there too.

What is your setup? What speed are you paying for and what is the typical DL speed you are seeing in Epic Games?

Router is the D-Link DIR-825 that afrihost supplied , linespeed is 200MB. Downloading from Epic last night was full speed. The picture I posted above was on EPIC, then I tested Battlenet , Steam , Origin and UPLAY. I even tested HTTP and Usenet Downloads and throttled the speeds myself. All giving exactly the same issue. As soon as you pause the DL then the packetloss dicipates and ping goes down to 30ms (early hours of the morning is 12ms). As soon as you resume a Download ping goes to 60ms+ and a lot of packet loss. This does not happen when I test a ADSL line even though the speed was on 10mb. Will do further testing over tonight and the weekend.

All these issues that are on this forum only suggest link congestion.

ADSL lines use buffers instead of packet loss when you max the line (The way telkom sets it up)

Buffers cause even more problems with out of order packets etc

Somewhere something has to tell your pc to slow down, either with latency or dropping the packets

I have seen some ISP's exclude ICMP (ping/traceroute) traffic from the queues/limiters so that your pings stay the same when you max the line

I think it was on the Cool Ideas thread that one of the FNO's used buffers, and it had horrible results for some traffic

Adsl I metioned only because we didn't have these packet loss issues, I know they work different. Fact remains that in Feb and March this packet loss was not happening on my connection. This all started in early April. And just got worse with time. If you look at all the complaints above in this thread and after afrihost acknowledged with Network issues in Cape Town 21:05, 19 MAY 2020.. All comes down to link link congestion ....

Further more this below is from afrihost's server page. And internet has not gone off yet. Same as when Frogfoot says there is maintanance and users will be offline . But never happens.

FrogFoot PE Maintenance17:41, 13 MAY 2020
MAINTENANCE
Kindly take note of planned maintenance that will be taking place from 2020-05-21 at 11:00:00.0 to 2020-05-21 at 18:30:00.0. Clients will have no connectivity during this time. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Soz I actually misread your post, didnt see the part about when you throttled your download and packet loss was still there

Yeah Leno I test every which way I can , all tests point to afrihost/fibre link congestion... Even when I throttled a download to 5Mb/s it still gave packet loss lmfao.

@red7za, I see that you are getting PL even when the downloads are throttled.

Please try run a speedtest on http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest and report back.

This speedtest will also test for bufferbloat, which will give you an idea of whether bufferbloat could be causing these issues and thus also packet loss down the line

I would expect the packet loss to be on the first hop after his router (which I also didnt pick up the first time I looked)

Something fishy going on

Walmer was supposed to have maintenance/optimisation today but I had no downtime, wonder if it was not performed today at all or if we were routed via a backup link?

Edit: According to AH I was supposed to go down: Please be advised of the following scheduled change. This will interrupt services during this date and time. Date and Time: 2020-05-21 11:00:00.0 to 2020-05-21 18:30:00.

and another notice:
Please note that Frogfoot users in Walmer will experience intermittent to no connectivity due to planned maintenance. Maintenance will occur from 21 May at 11h00 to 18h30. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
