Another PE FTTH user posted an upload speed of 25Mbps a while ago. During my installation, a technician said that 10-15Mbps is normal. And he said it before my speed of 12Mbps appeared in the first speed test.

You are using a windows device? Just open network and sharing center (right click on the connection at the bottom) > Click on the connection (the blue piece) > Speed. It will say what your local network connection is.

How long is the cable you are using? Could it be that the router/device doesn't have a gigabit ethernet port?

Thanks. It says 100Mbps. I'm not sure how long the cable between the routers is, but it's fairly long. And the cable between my PC and my nearest router is also pretty long.

Ah well, I couldn't live without my Gigabit Ethernet between the PC :) (copy paste steam games across them, also if any large game updates).
It doesn't really make a difference, maybe 1/2Mbps to your download, the upload is limited by the fiber.

The cables were installed 5 years ago. Maybe gigabit ethernet was uncommon or much more expensive then? It is pretty annoying having slow network transfer rates. Replacing the cables would be such a huge job though. I'll just leave it.

I'm still using the same cables as about 6 years ago. Just check first if the PC and the router are Gigabit enabled and move on from there. Either of those are easy to replace compared to a long cable.

Cat 5e can handle gigabit speeds, but you need a gigabit NIC and a gigabit router/modem. I just use gigabit because of a home server that I store files, etc on and 100mbps would slow down internet for people on the same cable while I'm transferring files

I had the network cabling done professionally. There's another equally long cable leading from the main router to a third router like mine that is also used to extend the wifi. I'd be surprised if a professional wouldn't use gigabit cables if that was the standard at the time.

The routers definitely aren't the bottleneck. It's possible that there is just some settings I need to change.

@eddief1 Thanks! The main line runs right outside my house. A lot of cables went down a few months ago.

I couldn't believe how small the fibres are when my installation crew was connecting the wall unit. Hard to believe that so much data can travel through such a small cable.

Yes quite amazing for a piece of glass that is 0.25mm in diameter...your 100Mbps is just a pittance of what it is actually capable of carrying :-) think 2+Tbps :-)
 
So guys, I finally have some answers. There was a screw up on the Telkom side, my thinking is they were processing ISPAfrika orders from around the time my order was placed. What happened was that my details was captured with an address in Mill Park (i think it was probably Metsu's address because we had our installations scheduled for the same day, which was odd) so every time Garth double checked all seemed in order. So today they had to cancel my original order and place a new order. So hopefully things will run smoothly from here onwards. This actually makes me feel much better because I at least know whats happening.
