So guys, I finally have some answers. There was a screw up on the Telkom side, my thinking is they were processing ISPAfrika orders from around the time my order was placed. What happened was that my details was captured with an address in Mill Park (i think it was probably Metsu's address because we had our installations scheduled for the same day, which was odd) so every time Garth double checked all seemed in order. So today they had to cancel my original order and place a new order. So hopefully things will run smoothly from here onwards. This actually makes me feel much better because I at least know whats happening.

Doesn't seem like Telkom has a very good order system in place. Too few installation crews, too many orders scheduled for each day and too many errors capturing order information. And inadequate training for the fibre division office people - my crew were pulling their hair out trying to get reliable information from them.

You better hold thumbs someone near you has an installation coming up soon so that they throw your installation in with theirs. The waiting list is super long atm.

The schedulers (in Cape Town) think that a DSL and a Fibre installation is the same...

As from today the normal techies (DSL fitters) are shadowing the fibre installers. They have been trained but have yet to do any installs. Have to give the local manager some credit for doing this...

Sorry but that does not sound right at all. Orders are ID number and address based so there is no way they could make that error.

My Telkom technician said exactly that. And there are loads of complications that occur with fibre as well. For example, the guys who finished up my installation around midday had spent the entire morning wiring up nearby telephone poles. All while they were supposed to be doing two new installations the other side of town.

At least efforts are in place to increase the number of fibre installation crews.

Sorry MD, my explanation is horrible (2nd language) basically what I presume happened from the explanation I received, the wrong address was captured with my ID. That's how I understand it, might be wrong of course, but whatever happened messed up my order and I waited the whole of Friday for nobody to show. Hopefully everything goes smooth from hereon forward.

I raised this concern with Garth (which don't think is unreasonable seeing as I did order like on the 14Jan originally) and he said he and the manager are in the process to get my order bumped, which i think is fair. So hopefully soon!

Ask for the Telkom ref number...

I ordered mine on the 17th of December. :D

I will follow up with my domestic a little later in the morning, as the contractors should be coming in to do the trenching from the pole to the house.

I met with the contractor last week Wednesday, midday in the rain. He assessed and said could we do Monday and we arranged for Tuesday as that is when someone would be available at the house.

Fast forward to today, 6 days later. Well, the team didn't arrive. I called the contractor and he said, "he's too busy to come today - he probably won't make it this afternoon."

He now can only come on Friday when I can organise access again for them. Once he is complete, then can he only hand over to the Fibre team and they will then call me in due course to arrange an installation date.

I'll be honest, I am a little irritated that arrangements were made and now the entire project will move back another week. I can appreciate though, being in the IT industry, that things do happen. I also have paid for the full month of February, so at least I'm getting my monies worth from my current ADSL setup.

Speed at NMMU atm:

Do you think the 1gpbs is shared between all buildings on campus and if the staff and students are just effected by QOS?

If I had to guess I'd say each campus at NMMU gets a 2Gbps link for local bandwidth, as that's probably the limitation of the fibre connection. International speeds are a fraction of that. The QOS is pretty brutal for those on access points outside the computer science department and not on the staff connections, so it can be stretched quite far.

Aren't they 10Gbps links?

No clue. Heard someone say our fibre cables support 2Gbps, but there's no reason they couldn't have been mistaken. If the link is 10Gbps I don't know where the hell all that bandwidth is going. The internet is rubbish on campus. Despite the agreeable speed test results, web browsing is terrible.

Check the TENET web, I think the info s there.

Thanks. They have really good usage graphs for each university.

NMMU:
WACS in - 146Mbps average, 70Mbps current, 319Mbps max
WACS out - basically zero
Seacom in - 57.86Mbps average, 49Mbps current, 110Mbps max
Seacom out - 18.99Mbps average, 11Mbps current, 45Mbps max

So for international that's 429Mbps max download and 45Mbps max upload. And I'm sure the QoS spreads it around very inequitably. No wonder there was basically no international connectivity at around 9am this morning, when usage hits its peak.

Yeah http://iris-dce01.tenet.ac.za/iris/...ected=Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University&

Graph on that link shows 10gpbs, doesn't feel like it on campus and the graph shows the max speed as 1.47gbps over the last day.

I also noticed the speeds on the Computing Sciences access point(s) are way faster.
