please help/advise.

I have a desktop PC with an ADSL non-wifi modem, my bro upstairs got his PC connected but doesnt have internet. We recently got a PS3.I am looking at buying a laptop in the near future, so my questions are:
1). what hardware do I need, my modem is currently connected to my ethernet port?
2). What does my bro have to get for his PC to wirelessly connect on my internet?
3). What hardware do I have to get for the PS3 (if any) for same purpose?
4). What should I lookout for in the laptop that I will need as standard or to get upgraded.

We need to only share the internet connection.

Please remember that I am on a budget, I saw at one of the stores modems and routers ranging from around R350 to almost R2000 but I dont know better so please educate me or point me to it.

PS, Since I am in PTA, will thePTA WUG option make any sense for me?

I'm not sure how good your pc skills are, but I would venture to say that easiest way might be:
Replace your current adsl modem with a 4 port & wireless modem.
That would be the easiest way to provide the whole house with Internet access. Although you are talking about upstairs. Signal might be a problem, but can be dealt with.
The next step would be to get a wireless pci card or a wireless usb dongle for your brother.
The laptop will also have no problem connecting wireless to the pc's.
I'm not sure about the PS3. My xbox connected via ethernet cable.
The laptop - You really need to specify what you would need to do with the laptop. Type of software packages you want to use, etc.

You can also run network cables everywhere instead of wireless.
There are also options of using your wall plugs and house wiring to connect to your pc's.

Pretty much what Romark said will be the way to go.
A USB adapter for your brother's PC will be around R200. And a decent wireless modem will be from R500 up, at least. If you're only going to share an internet connection then dont go looking especially for the new wireless N modems, you wont need the extra speed, so rather save the cash. Then it seems as if the PS3 has a wirelss adaptor built in, otherwise you'll be stuck with good old fashion ethernet cable. And I dont think I've seen a laptop in the last 5 years that doesnt have wireless built in, but just look for something about wireless b/n and you're good to go.

The WUG is a whole different story. Its basically a file sharing network and does not provide any sort of internet connection (though anyone actively involved in it can happily correct me).

So thats minimum of R700 (R500 for my wireless modem and R200 for USB card) and I'm set. Thanks guys.

Any brands to look out for and can I buy used or is it not a wise option?

I just bought my whole ADSL setup (a modem, as well as a dual band wireless router). The brands I tend to lean towards are Netgear and Dlink as they have served me well in the past. But I know alot of the people on this forum recommend other brands and have had very few (if any) problems. As long as it has some sort of warranty I wouldnt worry about it too much
