Help needed: MTN Roaming (Data) Charges

I'm trying to find the cheapest way to stay in touch with someone on holiday in the Seychelles. She activated roaming on her MTN contract, but after checking the charges it seems that even sms's will be costly. If I got it right sms's are charged at R3.50 PLUS usual contract rate.
Thought of getting the FNB Connect app, but they advise against using it on a roaming sim.
Even WhatsApp will be costly then, right?
Should I tell her to get a local sim, and check the data costs they offer?
If anyone has any input on an affordable solution, voice or data, your help will be greatly appreciated.

yes whats app would be expensive as data charges on roaming are insane, best bet is for her to get a prepaid sim and then use whatsapp to keep in ctc we do that all the tme

Did that from the USA recently with an AT&T prepaid sim card.
