end 2009 we bought a computer with Windows XP installed on it from C2IT. Windows is giving trouble so i'd like to reinstall but C2IT has closed down. does anyone know what i should do? do i HAVE to go through the mission of contacting Microsoft?

That's what I would do, it's not that hard to pick up the phone and call them.

you have no idea ponder - there's no way of getting through to a human, everything's automated and the list of codes on my tower is endless so i never know which number to enter and i'm constantly being referred back to the previous menu. not that i'm ungrateful for your reply - if that's the only route i'll have to take it
If you listed your location, also which version of XP, maybe one of the forumites here might be willing to give you a copy of the cd.

No dude, I've always spoken to a person as I hate those IVR systems. I think you just have to hold on till the end of the first list and you get a option to speak to someone.

Did they give you a license key with that copy of Windows XP? It's a string of letters and numbers usually found on a sticker on the computer somewhere or in the discs and documentation that came with the computer. If you have the license key, you can re-install XP from a disc of the same version.
If you do not have a license key, then you need to buy the full version (or install another pirated version), depending on your social responsibilities and available cash flow.

They will also send you a replacement disk if your disk is broken , just photo copy License no. and bits of broken disk. Just pay minimal fee and courier cost ..
sorry about the delay and thanks for all the help (my mind's been on Rammstein and not on computers). we managed with one of these options
