Huawei B970/B970b HSPA Router

I have one up and running at home.

Me too!

It kicks the lama's ass. :)

PS : Had a fright when I logged into my router with Google Chrome 4, cos I only got a blank page. But, after installing the latest update for Chrome 4 (4.0.237.0), the problem has disappeared.

Anyone have anything to add about the power failure setting lose problem. No surprise I am not winning with Vodacom either

I've only experienced this once, have not really looked for a fix yet, but it will most likely involve a firmware update. Perhaps a UPS is a temporary work around?

@VodacomData, do you know if there is a firmware update in the works for the B970?

Huawei E960

I saw the Huawei E960 for sale at a Telkom branch for R930 cash. That's substantially cheaper than the R2,569 quoted at the Vodacom shop for the Huawei B970.

It seems to be the same device. Got the four ethernet ports, usb port, wifi, external 3G antenna, sim socket etc etc. It's just a bit more stylized than the B970.

Has anyone used one? Can you confirm it's the same thing? If not, what is the limitation?

B970 router

I've been looking at one. Seems like a good dal on top-up 200 with a small pay in. Concern I have is that it's firmware network locked. Sometimes in some areas I go to it's better to use MTN, and can handle this with network unlocked USB modems. I asked the technician at Vodashop & he said that none of modems are network locked but I'm not sure if I believe him because I had to help him network unlock my Huwai 3g PCMCIA card as he didn't really know too much. Anyone had any joy with the B970 or any comments about it.

None of the 3G devices or phones in SA are locked. There was a batch of E620's that were locked, but Vodacom will unlock them on request.

B970 is a great router. I am very happy with mine.

Thanks Morkhans, what about software - I had the e620 which I got unlocked. for the k3520 I'm using MWCONN which is network independant. Used MDMA on the e620 because after network unlocking the vodafone software wouldn't talk to my MTN sim - how do you resolve this with the B970 - isn't their some firmware which will need changing in order to connect via MTN sim card?

In router mode it should take any SIM you can create custom profiles, but the default Vodacom profile APN is internet just like MTN, so it should just work.

When attached as USB you can use MDMA as as with the other Huawei modems.

Cool - thank you, sounds brilliant. Just looking at the new post http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=205509 at the new ofering from telkom - seems like a good deal too - although I'm not sure what their coverage is like for 3g - the map didn't show much what their coverage is like but their contract rates are cheap - I assume thats because it's not HSDPA.

If you can buy the router cash at that price from Telkom then get a pre-paid Vodacom or MTN SIM and use that if Telkom does not cover your area.

I can see that there are a lot of very knowledgeable people here.

Anyone care to comment further on the Telkom offering ( I know that it is not a B970 so OT -- but perhaps not as it appears that the E960 is almost identical )

Any "gotchas" tricks & Traps -- apart from no WiFi antenna & random re-settings.

Anyone have experience with the unrestricted APN ( Public IP )

Was thinking of getting one of these to use as a fail over for my Cisco ADSL
( and some "playing" around to add to my store of knowledge :erm:)

:D

Thanks

MW

Everything works for me on the B970. Got unrestricted up and running with a custom profile.

I assume your fail-over will be a manual process?

That sounds scary MW - is that for the E960 or B970 and were the random resettings due to power outages or just 'sommer'.
