iBurst WiMax pricing

They were supposed to launch this WIMAX thing in the first quarter of 2008 and that became 1 June 2008. June came and they said the launch would be on the 1 August 2008. August 1 has come and passed and now they say 1 October 2008. Maybe they think we have forgotten. Again, this was supposed to be a consumer offering, and now it has suddenly become an enterprise offering. I said it and I will say it again: South African companies will never ever compete. They are just not good at all. All of them are full of nonsense. They fight for a license and as soon as they get it, they abandon the mission to provide services. Why? Because the thought of giving proper service to consumers is too much to stomach! It is like "We've been screwing these people and there is no-one to rescue them. Why should we treat them as if they matter now? We might just end up with a monster in our hands!" Then everyone keeps on with the same nonsense! One could blame ICASA or the DOC or ANC, but then the old regime was also responsible for 40% import duties- to protect uncompetitive local companies. The incidence of a South African export selling for less in foreign markets than the product sells here, is not new. I am not saying our useless authorities are not to blame. I am just saying these companies are now so used to this unacceptable behavior, that it is unlikely to change.

It is a fact that these prices are designed in such a way that they don't compete with Iburst's other offerings. One wishes the authorities would just give more isps the wimax licenses. I am talking about the available licenses.

In conclusion, I don't see anything changing really, unless I came up with a company myself. But then, would I get the license? And maybe by the time I do, (God forbid) I would be more corrupt than these people! One never knows.

How I rue Knott-Craig Senior's heart attack. This country will never know just how much it has lost.

Sigh!

5GB UnShaped: R499 (+R240 = R739, thus R401 less than ibust)

As I recently discovered when I had ADSL installed at work... hence why I am getting rid of Iburps altogether out of my life

High prices and bad service - I think I'll give IBurst a skip thanks.
You forget the thieving accounts department.

Stuff that, way too expensive. In any case, I don't have coverage.

LMAO and now we know which way iburst went wrt getting ROI. Instead of suddenly getting more users i think they just sunk themselves.

I wonder how the other companies will go.. because as soon as someone offers the proper price and is in it for the longer haul(unlike most that want their money back yesterday :p) people will head that way.

Just to note how bad ibust is:

A telscum 512kbps WiMax line costs R240 per month. Then you can use ANY ADSL ISP you want so here are some prices I got from Axxess: (you can get cheaper)

5GB Shaped: R299 (+R240 = R539, thus R316 less than ibust)
10GB Shaped: R599 (+R240 = R839, thus R358 less than ibust)

5GB UnShaped: R499 (+R240 = R739, thus R401 less than ibust)
10GB UnShaped: R999 (+R240 = R1239, thus R528 less than ibust)

Not to mention you have a lot more choice given that you can choose any ISP.

Thanx. This really highlights how bad the offer will be. And telkom will only get cheaper... Then you will have to pay money to iburst to be able to enjoy cheaper prices as well.

As Vodacom and Ibust are now in bed together, I am not optimistic about Vodacom's pending WiMax launch.

This is very true.. I was thinking the other day, after going to a presentation at uct of some companies recruiting, that the fat these people are living off is insane. It really seems to me that its become the norm in SA for companies to charge what they want without recourse.

The thought of starting my own company or buying out smaller ones with licenses has crossed my mind, but of cause you need good backing financially to do it. That combined with job hunting makes me think i should just go overseas for a bit, network a bit with the right people and then come back and try change things because i'll tell you this, from what i've seen with companies in SA, they not here to help you, just line their pockets. Maybe in a few yrs time the regulations will be better, but the corporate attitude i promise you will still be the same!

I will pass along to the next and best Service Provider thank you very much...

R1904 for 10GB uncapped on a 1mbps ? rather go for HSDPA, 7x faster, same price~ much more portable/sexy

Ok, been waiting for some time now, when are you guys going to tell me that this is only a joke,

As horrible as this is and as much as I hate IBurst there will be people like me that has no better option. More specifically looking at latency dependent applications like online gaming. If this service has the same stability and latency that the Telkom WiMax offers its the only and I mean ONLY option that some of us have. No landline to my place. No Telkom WiMax coverage. Not even Vodacom Wimax Coverage. No Neotel Coverage. And I live in Pretoria. So how bad is the collective telecommunication industry that I am forced to look upon this as the only possible option.

No way it's near 7x faster than a good WiMax connection. Don't look at the Mbps when it comes to mobile wireless.

These prices are terrible though, I guess they just don't want to undercut their own iBurst technology.

the sad thing is there are actually people who will take this crappy offer

It's quite an accomplishment - iBurst SA / WBS has yet again managed to be considerably worse than Telkodemonopolies.

Telkodemonopolies charges ZAR240/month for its WiMax rental, and if one adds on 5GB of shaped SAIX @ say ZAR70/GB, that equates to ZAR590/month.

Compared to ZAR855 from iBurst SA / WBS .

Oh and Telkodemonopolies' billing department is actually less incompetent than that of iBurst SA / WBS.

Well now dear ic. Now you know why I am trying to flog my spare modem and later, when my ADSL is installed, my currently in use iBurps modem. No takers I tell you... no-one is interested apart from a few people who want to either burn it or reverse-engineer it.

I know how iburst gets subscribers.

I live in an upmarket area , but we had our telkom lines stolen.
After 4 months and alot of complaints we still had nothing. It is now 6 months after the for months(thus 10 months without service).
Telkom still cannot tell me when i will get lines. Neotel has no coverage in our are. 3g and hsdpa do , but it is pricey and also not very stable , and the latency is not good.

Iburst has coverage in my area , and my latency and throughput is as to be expected from a 1 meg connection. without them i wouldve had nothing.
