How does that work? Does it store the video files locally on the iPad?

Yeah no plugging in or doing sync or any of that nonsense.

Just choose what you want a sync to the local device and it converts it if required etc.

But I don't use it like that at all, I just know it's there. I stream all my stuff from the Plex Server.

I do that via safari so I have never seen the point of the app.

Always had the app so the browser just seems very messy to me.

It's cheap as chips anyway.

In the App Store Plex is free but has a monthly IAP of $5.

Do you need the 5 bucks option for the main purposes?

That doesn't sound right.

There is the Plex Pass which is a monthly sub and gives you the App for free.

Then there is the App for $5 odd or so. I'm guessing there are two versions of the App on the store...or maybe they've changed the model.

I've never used the Plex Pass and I've had the App for years so it's hard to say...but I've also never used the Sync feature before.

Let me test it quick.

Okay seems the Sync option is part of the pass.

https://plex.tv/subscription/about

A lifetime membership sounds expensive, but when you have a lot of devices in your house that can get the Plex solution for that money it's not really all that much different than buying another device.

As I understand it with the Pass you get the Apps free and then can also use the already free ones on PS3/4 and Xbox 360 / Xbox One.

I see there are two In-app options available here...

https://itunes.apple.com/za/app/plex/id383457673?mt=8

I guess the one is a permanent activation like I have and the other is to use the Plex Pass instead.

Wish I'd read that before paying for the app - $5 wasted.

I'm not sure what you need to pay for? The App should be free?

Only the Plex Pass costs money which means you've paid for 1 month of Plex Pass.

But regardless of this it's a super app to be using in home.

The app is free but there is an in-app purchase to make it more functional. For example you can't stream for longer than a minute without the purchase.

Unfortunately this added functionality does not extend to local content.

Oh okay so they've changed it into a "demo" of sorts then.

Actually come to think of it I had to pay $5 for it back in the day as well.

I use it extensively especially when watching Movies/Series in bed on the iPad. I'll bet getting a Plex Pass lifetime soon as I build a new NAS to run the server on and that way it will unlock for the Playstation as well.

I'm using AirvideoHD. Not free but decent.

Also running Kodi but you'll need jailbreak for that. Lovely on the iPad Air!

I used Air Video way back in 2010; it did not have the "HD" part then.

It worked excellent.

It's had a massive facelift. It is brilliant!!

Back then there was a limiting Free version & the paid version.

I bought the App then some time later the app changed to the HD version & required it to be bought again...I was not too impressed & didn't get it.

Kodi on jailbroken iPad Air.

All my files are HD 720p/1080p. Streaming is via NFS. TP-LINK 8970 dual band router.

Sneek peak at AirvideoHD.

Once again, streaming is over my home network. The House Of Cards episode is h.265 encoded. Not many players handle that format but AirvideoHD does with aplomb.

So let's bump this up.

I plan on getting a Mini 2 or Mini 3 or most likely an Air 1; possibly Air 2...(that all depends on the budget though)...next month.

Any 3rd party video App that supports Picture in Pucture. Hulu; BBC iPlayer & all that obviously does not count.

I hear nothing from VLC & PlayerExtreme HD...

Can someone with a compatible iOS 9-running iPad see if this VLC update supports not only Split-Screen but Picture In Picture as well?

Please post a random screen grab showing the multitasking
