Absolutely true. I noticed that too, but the article was written months ago and the E71 is only just being released into the mainstream (I mean Vodashops don't have it, Makro has limited stock which you have to ask for specifically, [MTN has it though] etc.) Nokia must have made the improvement to the retail package. Kudos to them for that!

By the way, thanks for your help in testing my E71. Makro took it back and I've managed to get myself another one which has far better signal reception (though still not perfect, but a firmware update should fix that).
 
Vodacom can shove the iPhone. There's no way in HELL I'd pay that much for the phone. I'd far rather get the HTC Touch Diamond which trumps it in so many ways and is around the same pricepoint.

Very very bad pricing.
 
What would make iPhone great for me?

Well, a real display. I'm currently using 854 by 480. This high contrast, Sharp display is more beautiful than any I've seen on any phone from HTC, Apple, Sony-Ericksson or Nokia. If I went to 480 by 320 which is iPhone it would just look bad. I don't want to go that route.
The ability to playback H264 not only in L0 BP but also MP and possibly HP.
The ability to playback xvid and divx video.
The ability to use BT with non-Apple devices.
The ability to load stuff on the phone without having to use iTunes.
More storage. My PMP has 60GB of storage. 16GB is not enough.
Stereo Bluetooth. My current non-smartphone has that.

Anyway those are the reasons why the iPhone is not something I'll be buying. I also tend to prefer tacttile keys
to touch screen ones, and I like really big keys.

I have to agree the iphone is way too expensive in SA BUT it's still a great phone. They should really increase the usage to 500mb minimum.
The main reason I got an iphone is because of the exchange support. Your calender and mail gets pushed to your phone automatically.
Yes I know a blackberry can do this as well but then you have to install BES and all that crap. Oh yes and itunes, I like itunes.

the iphone has support for MS Exchange email, gmail, and yahoo, as well as the oldfashioned pop/imap.

this is the best phone the afican content has seen and to offer.

the phone also has 3 (i think) accelerometers. little apps from itunes store can be bought to use this. i downloaded a rollercoaster ride gravity app, and it tells you how the gravity was on the ride. it also does levelling for surveying of planes, compass where is north south east and west, and all sorts of fun and usable apps.

the iphone is:

a telephone
a sms messanger
an internet browser
a camera phone for taking quick snaps
an ipod to listen to music and movies
a wireless/bluetooth device
a muli-touch touchscreen based input device
a google maps browser - with directions and search capabilities - i.e. search for 'pizza', and you'll find a few places! (if only google will update the maps for directions, it could also work in SA)
a youtube video watcher
an email device (exchange, gmail, yahoo, pop, imap)
a gps-assisted device, which actually works!

and the list just grows and grows...

i dont see any negative in this product, although it might be expensive for some lower class people, but then again, why does the lower end people still try and get a n95 which is more expensive?

apple did not only release the iphone in SA, but also in 28 other developing countries

all in all, if you are upgrading soon, get yourself an iphone

You have wifi at your house and that means you have wifi everywhere you go? You don't get out much then huh bud.

"thousands of young professionals" , yes and about 50 times the amount of young professionals stayed away coz they knew better.

"some lower class people" , now that's just a *** attitude to have. People who could buy and sell you and all your young professional buddies combined are staying away from the iphone because the fact that you can afford something does not mean it is the right thing to buy.

I don't need to list the flaws of the phone here, there's more than enough evidence of that already, but you need a reality check and an attitude adjustment to go with that.

In 3 months time when your shiny brick is not so shiny, and all your buddies are sick of ur iphone stories..you will fall less than gracefully from your ivory tower. happy landing!

My Samsung f700 does all those things + it has a keyboard and a better camera....

Not saying the overall phone is better just saying that if thats all you wanted in the phone you could have got it in a hand set for about 1/---1/4 the price of the iphone.

Anyway if your happy with it good for you :)
 
Personally, I feel that the iPhone is very overrated. No cut-and-paste?! My "lowly" Nokia 6600 can do it from almost any application. It also has most of those 3rd party applications you have to download for the iPhone built in. Hell, it can even receive streaming video.

I'm due for an upgrade and decided on the Nokia E51. Why, you may ask, do I want another "common" phone? Firstly, it has WiFi with VoIP support, good battery life and 6 different frequency bands (4 2G / 2 3G) which means that I can use it absolutely anywhere on Earth where there's a signal. 8 GB storage - just pop in a MicroSD card. Being a Nokia, I can also be certain that the phone will excel at its main feature, ie making and receiving calls and SMSs (not dropping calls like the iPhones).

All the new Nokia N and E-series have Push e-mail capabilities, so that's nothing special. You just have to say to yourself: 40% of all cellphone users worldwide can't be wrong when choosing Nokia.

But anyway, enjoy your overpriced Chinese-made toys while I sit quietly in the corner with my "boring" Finnish telephone. Finally, one of my professors is an absolute Apple nut, but uses a Nokia N95. I asked him about his choice of phone, and he told me that his phone does what he needs it to do and that he will never buy an iPhone.

The sooner you acknowledge this simple statement, the more time you will have on your hands for things that truly count.


All I'm saying is stop being so stuck up. If someone bought the iPhone, whats it to you? - leave them to be happy with their purchase.

Ok, I'm going to have to leave you at this - as if I don't, I'm not practising what I preach.

Your post makes absolutely no sense. Thanks for your "constructive" input. You may do well to read the subject of any thread you post on and then try to stay on topic in future... The topic of this thread is " iPhone 3G? No thanks", hence my posts.

You will not go wrong with the E51. Easily the best phone I have had (excluding my E71). Very underrated phone, that. Superbly priced & infinitely featured.

Regarding using it absolutely anywhere on Earth - you won't have 3G coverage everywhere ;) BUT, I only recently discovered this (and it intrigues me): the E51 has an interesting choice of 3G/HSDPA/UMTS frequency bands (850 and 2100). What that means is that it will work where it matters: SA, UK/Europe [2100] and the USA [850]. For me, that would be perfect. Unfortunately, the E71 is not the same and does not implement the US bands. There's a version of the E71 (the E71-3) that does have 850 / 2100, but we don't get that here (we get the E71-1 with 900 / 2100).
 
I too have been given an E51 by my company, mobile e-mail 3.5G lightning speeds, replaces the need for my e220 modem as it can be easily tethered, one click basically. Great featured phone and as mentioned underrated.

I wouldnt mind playing with an iphone...for a week or two...and for free.
 
Im buying the Iphone because it does have the basics and it looks super cool!
