i was at the vodacom iphone launch, including some thousand plus other young professionals. me and my bro got ourselves a iphone 8gb, and since we created our itunes accounts, i haven't stopped using it.

it's the best phone i have ever bought in my life.

all this negative hype is really people who is jealeous about the phone, its functions, and the fact that only vodacom released it - no jailbraking, or usa import. everything just works on it. the nokia n95 price is R 9600 if you buy it cash, and the iphone at R 6400. who wants to get a n95 when he can get a iphone for 3k less?

i have a wireless ap in my house, and everywhere i go, i have wifi (plugged into my 4mbps adsl) access for my iphone. all the movies and updates goes over my wireless connection via adsl (much cheaper than trying to watch youtube movies all day long on 3g). when im at work, im always connected to the nearest 3g tower, and everything still works amazingly.

the iphone has support for MS Exchange email, gmail, and yahoo, as well as the oldfashioned pop/imap.

this is the best phone the afican content has seen and to offer.

the phone also has 3 (i think) accelerometers. little apps from itunes store can be bought to use this. i downloaded a rollercoaster ride gravity app, and it tells you how the gravity was on the ride. it also does levelling for surveying of planes, compass where is north south east and west, and all sorts of fun and usable apps.

the iphone is:

a telephone
a sms messanger
an internet browser
a camera phone for taking quick snaps
an ipod to listen to music and movies
a wireless/bluetooth device
a muli-touch touchscreen based input device
a google maps browser - with directions and search capabilities - i.e. search for 'pizza', and you'll find a few places! (if only google will update the maps for directions, it could also work in SA)
a youtube video watcher
an email device (exchange, gmail, yahoo, pop, imap)
a gps-assisted device, which actually works!

and the list just grows and grows...

i dont see any negative in this product, although it might be expensive for some lower class people, but then again, why does the lower end people still try and get a n95 which is more expensive?

apple did not only release the iphone in SA, but also in 28 other developing countries

all in all, if you are upgrading soon, get yourself an iphone

I think the real issue here is not the iPhone but Vodacoms pricing and handling of the launch. They should have learnt a lesson from the original UK launch. Priced way too high and so they had to lower the price significantly.

So when you take a look at it - R14000 over 2 years to pay for 100 sms's that most people would not use(why text when you have 120 free anytime minutes?). Plus a few hundred rands extra every month when you go over your 250mb data limit.

So don't hate the iPhone when it looks as though the real problem is with Vodacom. I figure they will have to lower the price if they hope to get rid of their inventory of 30 000 phones before Apple releases version 3 next July.

Boycott Vodacom and buy unlocked ones!

Firstly, I am beyond being a "young professional" so perhaps it was you who had used daddy's car to drive to Vodaworld. But I will take your comments as a complement to my ability to look many years below my real age.Thanks.

Secondly, where the hell did this become a proudly South African argument? Did I miss something here? Unless of course you are getting your threads totally muddled up. It happens after staring at threads and pawn on your tiny little iPhone screen for too long.

Thirdly, if I went out to buy a phone, which is what we are actually talking about here, I would ignore all the hype, do my research on the net and then get the phone that best suits my need. Please note IGNORE ALL THE HYPE! This is what I have done and always will do. As an added bonus once I have done all this research the phone I desire is then no longer freshly released to much hyoe and is usually a lot cheaper. I am not one of those who needs the first phone released in SA. Why? It will not be long before every man and his dog has one and it is no longer such a bragging point anyway.

Finally, I will argue with your assertion that 99% of people who own the iPhone are clued up on the ins and outs of the phone. They own it because it is an iPhone. The same way people drive 4x4s and never go off road. They want to look cool!

Makes sense to me, look at how the car prices are falling. Well we all were forced to stop buying less. Hope the same goes for the iPhone so that Vodacom can wake up and smell their own manor.

Some of us do own iphones (unfortunately). If I have to choose again, I'll go for something else. And yes, I also loved my iphone when I first got it, but the novelty wears off quite fast...especially when you have to start admitting to yourself that half the functions on your phone can't compete with similar ones found on other phones.

I am always looking for honest views of new products. All I get about the iPhone is hype and no specifics. I was hoping for some but none are forthcoming.

I bought mine from Makro, and they had no issues exchanging it (other than very little stock - I had to wait for them to get more... They didn't have it out on display, BTW, so ask for it by name ). Sure, you can get it for hundreds less online, but it's questionable how those stores are going to treat you when you want to get a faulty unit exchanged... I e-mailed two online retailers about it, and they did not answer my question about their exchange policy, instead claiming the '24 month SA warranty' and a 20% re-stocking fee if I return the phone.

Disagree with a few points in this review ...

No stereo jack. Evidently only N95 users are graced with this “ticket to the ballpark” of music-enabled devices.

The E71 has a sub mini 2.5mm stereo jack (as opposed to a completely proprietary one), so you can use standard headphones with a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter.

GPS! No! You’re in for just under R1 000 to get the maps working on the GPS.

Wrong, the E71 comes with 12 month free license for Nokia Maps, which by the way has full turn by turn voice navigation.

You’re also in for around $16 to get full functionality out of the push-email app (EMoze) as well.

Wrong, Mail for Exchange will do full push email with MS Exchange 2003 SP2 or 2007, not that one would want to due to the power penalty. Syncing every 15 min is good enough for me (how impatient can you be).

Fring (my choice for consolidated IM) ... Fring just restarted the whole time

Havent tried Fring as I have no need for it. My contacts are on MSN and the E71 has a full Windows Messenger Live client (co-developed by MS & Nokia) and Nokia have by far the best/most seamless VoIP/SIP implementation (there is no app, its built into the base OS).
