I just think the 3G iPhone is the best and coolest phone I've ever owned.
So easy to switch to music (got myself the Sennheiser earbuds today, sounds great!), check the weather, send a sms.....WELL DONE APPLE! Next I'll have to get a Macbook Air.

What everyone is forgetting is that South Africa's iPhone is unlocked, whereas other pay as you go options from countries like: greece, italy, portugal, uk and france require an additional payment to have it unlocked.

I've been there! Impossible to stay away.
*Just loaded 800 pictures from My Pictures folder on my iPhone, so cool to scroll through all the party pics, etc again. Some of the pics I didn't even know were on my pc! ...while I'm listening to Viva la Vida. Oh, and I still have 13.45GB storage left.
Just love my phone.

First of all I have the 2G iPhone, dont see the need to get the 3G right now, I dont need the speed yet.
Before I begin, this post pertains to MY SITUATION
I have been a great fan of Sony Ericsson, last one being the K850i. A few months ago I got the iPhone 2G and was not too impressed at first, like many, but after a few googling and poking around I found some pretty useful apps. Also being a mac user I found the interface of the iphone complimenting the clean, crispness and user friendly - which is a big plus for me. I also found that I could add themes to my iphone and even change the icons. Of course this had to be done after jailbreaking the phone.
I dont mind jailbrealing or unlocking "for me" because its stuff I can do, but for most people not having this knowledge can leave them pretty much with a lack of many things for the iphone.
My first impressions was "damn - no freekn MMS, no video recording, no sms forwarding or copy and pasting". So how did I get around these stumbling blocks?
First of all - MMS:
I downloaded SWIRLY MMS. Its a great app that allows me to MMS... It works perfect and Ive been sending photos to my mum in Aussies via MMS. - Problem solved.
Secondly : Video recording:
I downloaded Cycorder - its does the job pretty well.
Video Conferencing:
With all the dual camera phones ive had, ive never used it once. Certainly don t need it on the iPhone. Infact im sure that most people who video conference just do it with one or two people, whom they see often as well.
SMS Forwarding
Ive needed this function about five times in my life. Something I can do without for a while.
Mail
Because Im most of my time behind my pc / mac, thats where I get my mail. And if im out of town for a couple of days, then MAIL on the iPhone works perfect.
Bluetooth
Well im glad my iphone cant send files via bluetooth, saves me from all those pestering me for wallpapers, songs, themes etc etc. Like when I swithed over to MAC OSX, I stopped getting ppl worring me for software.
Camera
Although only 2mpxl camera, I found it quite good. What I HATE is the lack of a flash. With my Sony Ericsson I used to use it as a torch, but the iPhone doesnt even have a flash.
Audio Recording
I record alot of lectures and a great app I use is SPEAKEASY. works brilliant and has a wonderfull interface
Games
The games for the iPhone are improving drastically. I love my car games, of which I have a few. No other phone has such good graphics in thier games. Suites me fine when waiting in long ques or for the wife while she does the shopping.
Other Apps I use and found usefull
iQuraan - Complete Quraan with audio
iPray - Prayer times for Muslims
Remote - controls my audio on my mac
Pysl - Blcklist calls and sms;s for unwanted calls
Evernote - Brilliant OSX, Windows, iPhone app that copies stuff and syncs to the net
Air Sharing - Share my iPhone to my mac wirelessly
iLog - Logs calls and messages
iOweYou - Nice app I use to remind when I borrow something from someone or they from me
magicPad - Brilliant notepad app that allows you to email the noteas as well
WeDict - Dictionary
Level - A level
WordPress - I use this to update my iphone3g.co.za website
Compass Free - I use this to find North when I need to pray and face the direction of Mecca
Fizz Weather - Brilliant and accurate weather app
PacMan - Classic Game
SpendLite - I use this as a budget app
TankPro - I use this to track my petrol usage
Todo - Things that I need todo

There are other apps I use but dont really need. the thing is that there are always new and improved apps available.
For me the iPhone is the best phone Ive had, Ive played with the Nokia and Samsungs and others but none compare - for me - to the iPhone. I know that there are other phones that do the same thing but the iPhone does it in a way that is better.
I agree that is is a hefty price but luckily for me I got mine at a bargain. - R2500 for a 16G

The iPhone is not overated, its just in a league of its own, and amateur gadget users do not get to see this. Before iPhone, most touch phones only relied on stylus, and those that try to mimic multi-touch fail impressively. Makers like HTC, releases different looking phones, powered by the same Operating System with only minor changes in interface.
Apple are setting a trend, and I think the iPhone will maintain the same look for years to come, with hardware improvements to compensate for newer technology. As for the OS, it can only get better with full support for updates and a growing library on the App Store.
So if you are still stuck up in the old age and still relying on keypad for text inputs... Well, thats your choice....As for Vodacom, they are legitimate business people who want to max profits, if you want a cheaper iPhone, then wait for a few months for the price to come down...

If I may I would like to go through your post and comment. This is not to knock the iPhone because of jealousy, as some people insinuate, but merely to provide a balanced view, which is what I feel people doing internet research before buying a phone want...
To be fair I will start by saying that this is also my personal situation and view and I currently have an N95 and have no qualms in publicly stating that it is the best phone ever. I will not give the reasons here as this is an iPhone thread.
This is the first issue I have. Why after paying a fortune for a phone should you not be able to personalise it and change it with out "jail breaking" it? If I own the device I want the freedom to make changes as I see fit.
And first impression are everything they say. Now imagine those who are not tech savvy and can't do the googling and poking around you did?
I don't care which way you look at it, this is appalling. MMS has become a basic means of communication in this country. You know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words. Yes, you may have solved the problem but this involved input and effort from your side. Again not really ideal when you paid what you did for the phone.
Also how does this new application fit in with the interface as a whole. When I go onto a contact name and go to the messaging options it offers me the option to sms, mms, email and bluetooth. Does yours or do you have to open swirly mms to do so?
Again same arguments as above. When I have my camera shutter open and I am using the camera it offers me the option to switch between video and still photos at the click of a button. Does your application allow this or do you have to close the camera and start Cycorder?
Well I can tell you that I have used it on a number of occasions. Think of the situation where you have been sent out to buy masks for a fancy dress party. You get to the shop and there are hundreds. You are not sure which one the significant other will want so instead of phoning and describing them you make a video call and she can see for herself.
Or what about video calling mates and making them jealous by showing them the chicks lying around you on the beach while they are working and you are on holiday? Yes, you are not going to do this every day but when you need it it is nice to have!
Never used this myself but who are Apple to decide if I need it or not? Especially if you are wanting to make claims of releasing the best handset on the market.
I thought this was standard on most phones now... or perhaps I have just been lucky with my phone choice. Even my old blue rubber Nokia had email.
Now this is just crazy! You know how often I want to send a picture I have taken from my phone to my laptop for whatever reason. VERY OFTEN! Or I'll take a great picture and the GF or another will say they want it. No problem. Switch on bluetooth, find them and send. The other option would be to get the cable out and plug it in. Now if the cable is not around?

Also I asked this question the other day but did not get a response. What do you use to control the games? Is it controls which appear on the screen? If so surely this affects the playability. I know when I play a game I like to be able to feel the buttons under my fingers. No time to look for the fire button in the heat of the moment....
It is great being able to load extra applications as can be done on the symbian platform. All there are numerous places to find these and they are open. No need to visit the apple store. I am assuming from the above app list though that the iPhone does not even log calls (iLog app) made and received straight out of the box?
You iPhone users seem to assume that anyone who questions the greatness of your phone must be a hater. I for one do not see any reason to hate it. What I will do is spend time, like I have done here, to provide a balanced view when I see posts that perpetuate the notion that the iPhone is the greatest mobile phone ever released. It is not and I was not even aware of the degree to which it is not until I read some of these recent posts which try to sing the praises of the iPhone but in fact merely point out it's shortcomings.
If you guys accepted that fact that the iPhone is an iPod that makes calls then we would not need to make these corrections.

Good email and www access? I've had a blackberry for longer than I care to remember and considering all the means of communication at my disposal mms is by far and away the least used one.
Am I missing out on some fantastic technology? What would be the advantage of me mmsing my family in the UK rather than emailing them?

You need to be aware of what the person you are trying to communicate with has at their disposal..... you are assuming they have email at hand! Besides you cannot mms overseas anyway.
I am aware of what people have at their disposal - remember I've had the ability to easily choose between MMS/Email/Blackberry PIN/Gtalk/Yahoo messenger/Facebook/ . . . for years now (at the low low monthly price of r69 for unlimited data) and I've sent and received less than a handful of MMS'es in that time yet sent and received thousands upon thousands of messages using the other messaging systems.
You cant mms overseas? Has MMS got anything going for it?

Us youngsters send a lot more mms's than that....
Besides I do find it quite interesting that out of that rather long list of shortfalls with the iPhone you choose to specifically pick on the MMS.
And also I am not talking about what you have at your disposal but what the lucky recipient has.... if I send them an email what use is it if they do not have email on their phones while they are in the Berg, or send a facebook message and they can't get onto the internet. It is just another option to add to that list you mentioned. why limit yourself? Or more importantly why allow Apple to limit you?

I'm still wondering the same thing.
I've had at least 3 phones in the last 4 years that support MMS.. and I think I've sent maybe 4 mms's in that time. iPhone does email v well, and for me that is a much much better solution than MMS could ever be.
