I signed on to every waiting list I could find for MTN, Vodacom and iStore. MTN I pre-registered in the first 2 hours when the opened it up, never heard from them again. I also pre-registered and wait-listed for the iPhone 4S round long ago, also ended up waiting 2 or 3 months before hearing anything. My conclusion is that waiting lists and pre-registrations are useless and ignored, unless you "know a guy" or bribe a guy. Vodacom came out on top though, they did eventually call me and I placed an order with them. They warned me about stock levels and even suggested that I pick Silver to get one sooner. So next time round I'm just going to order the thing online as soon as possible rather than chasing around in angst staring into the blank uninterested faces of store employees (again, some of them were good, iStore mostly).

I phoned MTN Direct for an upgrade and received my phone within 48 hours. They have all the colours and sizes.

Have they confirmed stock? the phone has been listed online for a while but no stock

No, it's always been listed on their website as Unavailable. Today is the first time in a while it actually says Add To Cart for the 16GB, so assume they have stock.

I contacted Vodacom yesterday and they said they don't have iPhone 6 (64 GB) stock and they can't confirm when it will be available.

The istoreonline site has been sporadically having various models available over the last few weeks. I know because I wrote a small utility to scan the iPhone6 and iPhone6+ pages every half hour to detect when the various models came available. I had the utility running for nearly two weeks before it emailed me on friday afternoon at 16:30 to say the model i was after (black 128gb) had come into stock. I ordered it as soon as I got home and it will apparently be delivered tomorrow (they only process orders on weekdays, hence the extra couple days wait).

If you're running chrome, I'd suggest adding one of the plugins which monitors for when a page changes. Then just point it at the page you're after and off you go.

For the record, as I type this, my utility is showing that all these models are available on the online istore website right now:
iphone6 - 16gb - silver
iphone6 - 16gb - space gray
iphone6+ - 16gb - silver
iphone6+ - 16gb gold

iStore uses FNB for EFTs, so if you do an EFT payment from your own FNB account, it should be nearly instant. If you live near their distribution hub you should get your device the next day, or maybe 2 days later at a push.

Anyway, just thought I'd share what worked for me. Good luck everyone!

Care to explain how to install that plugin?

I had a very quick look, this plugin looks like what you're after:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/page-monitor/pemhgklkefakciniebenbfclihhmmfcd?hl=en

(in case that doesn't work, search the chrome store for "Page Monitor"). It explains how to use the plugin there, but basically once it is installed a little "page monitor" icon is added to chrome. When you want to monitor something, you go to the page (i.e. the istore 6 or 6+ page), then click the icon and click "monitor this page". It appears to scan it every 3 hours by default, but if you go into the settings for the plugin there's a slider you can modify to your hearts content. Every 30 minutes is probably about fine. Then, when the page changes, you should get an alert!

Caveats: I'm guessing you need to keep the browser open and the page you're monitoring open in a tab. If you're only interested in a specific model, monitor just the page for that model, not the generic "iphone6" page which lists them all (this should stop false-positives where it alerts you but for a model you're not interested in).

Man that was fast - they started processing my order at 14:55 yesterday afternoon and it was already waiting for me at home today after work. Less than a 24 hour turnaround. Very impressive. So yeah, keep a close eye on the istore site, you might have a shiny new gadget in your hands sooner than you realise!

I get the idea that most people here are buying the phone off-contract. I was considering that early in the game but decided to go contract again because I keep forgetting to buy prepaid airtime.

I hate it when that happens.
But nowadays you can just log onto your online banking and buy prepaid airtime there.
Plus, on contract you pay more per minute than on prepaid, which is the opposite of how it should be.
