iPhone appeal slipping

My biggest problem with the iPhone - and iPad - lies not in the physical design but in the too slow evolution of iOS. As a long-time iOS user now playing with Android Jelly Bean roms iOS feels ancient, like and OS designed for an older generation of devices and users. Yes, Android is not a rock-solid as iOS, but it is FUN. One can mess around and make the device look and operate very differently. Yes, there is jailbreaking iOS ... but it is nothing like what can be done with Android (in my experience).

This is the only comment out of anything you've said which I would agree with. iOS hasn't been seriously refreshed even once. Although, Jelly Bean only now feels as smooth as iOS was 2 years ago. Since I installed it onto my SGS and DHD I can't go back though.

iPhone physical design is doing just fine. iPhone 5 mockups look very classy, and the rumoured screen resolution (1156x640 @ 4.0") compares very well with S3/One X who put similar resolutions onto much larger screens. And that doesn't take into account all the unknown variables such as improved battery life (via the thinner screen tech), A6 chipset, and whatever else they'll pack into it. What else could I really ask for?

Its all about practicality, in my eyes the build quality of a phone is about the durability of the phone and the visual appeal of the phone. If that can be achieved with rubber then by all means I would take that over a fully metal phone that shatters upon any physical impact.

Have I got a range of phones for you ...

Bit hard to get hold of in SA, but if you seriously prize durability over everything else, these are the ones to go for.

It did? How? Where? Shouldn't you wait for the next iPhone before declaring their fear of innovating?

iPhone 4 to 4S and iPad 2 to iPad "3" ... booooooring. Siri can't be take sirious ... like asking a waiter at Wimpy for an explanation of Higgs-boson ... you might get lucky and get a physics student as waiter, but the chances are very very small. The new iPad to come - as per latest rumours - will have small changes in heat management and the moving of the microphone.

I think Apple need to worry about the shareholders more than customers. If the next Iphone is not groundbreaking or rather they cannot convince them that it's groundbreaking expect the share price to plummet

Apple tend to keep the prices the same or up them and turn it into an exclusive product.

Either way, who cares, Iphones and the Istore are a bit klunky when you have used google play or an android for any length of time.

The Android folk should sincerely be wishing the iPhone 5 is great.

Samsung is upping the ante and Apple must reciprocate - that's how we all gain. Having one dominant player, be it Apple or Samsung, is bad for everyone.

+1

Last week I helped the boss set up a Huawei tablet and that is enough Android experience for me for the next month. But let us not forget that the original iPad became available in South Africa (long after every other country) within a month of Samsung and Motorola bringing out their tablets. Coincidence? I think not!

Competition is a GOOD thing. Which is why I sincerely hope that the fandroids get better and better phones. Just to make Apple a little nervous.

Agree, time for revolutionary vs evolutionary upgrade to iOS.

To be fair though, you should compare iOS 5 to Android 2.3 to gauge the user experience of 95% of users of both platforms.

I like the S3, but my ecosystem, I plug my iPhone into my car, the sound system can handle the iPhone's playlists etc. I get home and I control my Apple TV using my iPhone. I can also watch the family videos, TV Series and Movies from my iTunes library. I buy most of my series from iTunes, and lately movies too, so all of it works brilliant on the iPhone, the S3 won't connect to any of it, or would it?

Also S3 users, do you use the standard rom or load a custom rom? I hate the way the Android vendors 'make the ui better', they all suck in my experience, HTC sense on my DesireHD was disgusting, hated it, so I loaded C7 on that one.

Those refreshes are exactly what happened with the iPhone 3 to 3Gs. In fact the iPhone only changed form at iPhone 4 all the way from the first iteration. The market seemed quite happy with it.

It won't change. When Apple find a winning design, they iterate on it, rather than making big changes. Look at OS X, it's basic look hasn't changed in 12 years, but all the while being updated to remain the best OS

With one model released every 12-15 months Apple cannot afford to gamble. I total revamp of iOS could take a lot of less tech savie folk out of their comfort zones and is therefore too high risk.

Releasing a radically altered 5inch iPhone would do the same and is therefore not viable.

If the way Android (ICS) crashes, hangs and randomly restarts on my Asus Transformer is any indication, I NEVER want this on a phone, thanks.

I want rock solid because for me the iPad is more of a tool than a toy which is why when it comes time to update the OS I try to wait and see what problems there might be that will affect me. I get that for some the look is more important than the experience though.

Having had 3 iPhones (2, 3, 3s) and now 3 Androids (2 x s2, ace) in my family, and having being the designated installer/maintainer I am the one giving a damn.

Sorry to be a details nazi but there is no such thing as an iPhone 2......

Not to be a fan boy, but iPhones definitely have MUCH better build quality than the rest. I've watched several other people go through 2 or 3 or even 4 Samsungs or HTCs during which time my iPhone has remained as pristine as the day it was unboxed and just as functional if not more than the competition.

I have had my iPhone 4 since last year april. runs like a bomb. not a crack or bad scratch. never used a cover either.

also, my battery hasn't exploded either. even when using car-chargers.

iPhone 4 to 4S is perhaps boring, at least... standard uptick of specs. iPad2 to iPad3 was a revolution especially given how quickly they were able to do it.

That and sifting through countless POS home made apps and buggy clones untill you find one that works properly on your phone.

Yeah, once you get off the Gapps yellow-brick-road it's a wasteland :/

Yes with standard rom I can connect to my XBMC media player and control every facet of my media experience from playing music to watching movies. Also via Allshare i can connect directly with my Samsung television and view media content from my phone on the TV directly via wi-fi. I just don't have any docking station in my car - but that does not bother me.
