Hey guys,
I unlocked my 1.1.2 OTB using Ziphone 2.5 after I restored firmware 1.1.4. It worked fine for over a week, but then since monday afternoon, i was unable to make or receive any calls. The funny thing is that i'm still able to send & receive sms. I have tried to restore, downgrade and unlock it several times again....no luck! I have full signal, and it picks up VodaCom without a problem... I just cant make & receive any calls ("call failed" everytime). It does work with my friends Cell C SIM though...I also tried MTN and its also 100% fine. Any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone?

Thanks
Tim

mmm....I can't read the thread, but I will answer anyway.

I've had a couple of "call failed" 's on my iPhone and I thought oh noez...the iPhone is fubar. Popped my simcard into my HTC and it did the same thing! The network just sometimes fails and it happens on all of my phones. My iPhone doesn't do it particularly often...just once in a while.

sorry...but it seems to f**k out every time I try to post by not displaying anything in my post

can you not receive any calls at all?
i only get the call failed error when i try to make calls, and usually it works when i retry it again.
i did have a similar issue with receiving calls when i just got my iphone which was sorted out when i got a new sim card as my other one was like 8years old...

so maybe go to vodacom and get a sim swop? it wont fix the error when you try to make calls, but you should be able to receive them =)

It used to say 'call failed' once in a while...but then (as you said), just retrying fixes the problem and the call always went through. Since monday afternoon, i have not been able to make and receive any calls what so ever...it just stopped working (without me installing or changing anything)

thats very weird... does your sim allow you to make calls when you've put it in other phones? if it doesnt then you should probably try a sim swop...

I used to have the same problem with my N95. What sorted my problem out was doing a sim swap from a 32k sim card to a 64k sim card. Very weird - but I can now make calls on the 64k sim card with no hassles...

My SIM works in every other phone, so I am using my N73 at the moment while I figure this problem out. I have put another Vodacom SIM into my phone (both 32k), and its really only vodacom SIMs that dont work! MTN & Cell C are 100% OK...very weird, especially since I have been using it for 2 weeks without this issue completely.

@ limnos: What are the 64K SIMs (newer sims?)? Also, what network are you on, and did you have the exact same issue as I am having (i.e. cant make & receive calls, but can send/receive SMS)?

Thanks for all the input everyone =)

hmm if anyone can confirm it is the 32k sims causing this prob then i will def consider changing..

but for now, can i ask that someone tries one of those R2 Voda SIM cards from Pick n Pay or something in their iPhone to check if the problem is that our current SIM cards are too old..

If that still gives probs, we will have to try a 64k SIM to verify exactly what the problem is..

Im sure if we work together we can get to the bottom of this.. Dont give up on us!

I will try and get hold of a R2 SIM as soon as i can, but i also ask anyone else that can to give it a shot. Even if its just calling 121 or seomthing :D

Thanks guys!

different devices use different contact points on a SIM card ... I have had the pleasure of using just about every GSM enabled as well as the iPhone and from time to time i have similar issues with numerous devices on VC as well as MTN ... the problem could reside with the SIM card device interface or it could be the service provider ...

Question is, are there end users in other countries experiencing similar issues? or are we alone in this struggle?

well when i bought the phone in dubai i had no such problems... this was for about 2/3 weeks .. as soon as i get back here this "call failed" rubbish starts happening...

somehow i think its just here

I have read on a numbuer of forums that people with their iphones have been having similar issues all over the world. But for us, it just seems to be vodacom. My phone occasionally said call failed, and i have been using it for 3 weeks now, but it wont make any calls what so ever anymore (call failed everytime). This is a vodacom issue only...whether its SIM or network related we'l have to find out!

@ fxit_man: I will try and get a 64k vodacom sim card. just to test it...will let you know. Are you also vodacom?

Yep i am...thanks man appreciate it...it could also be that ur SIM card is old, damaged etc... try one of those R2 prepaid ones as well just as a test :D

Im going to a vodacare on monday, where I know this guy, and he'l put some 64k SIMs in my iphone to see what happens. I really hope this SIM swap will work! Will keep you posted from my side

I have an iphone and I had the same problem till I changed my sim card to a 64k and now no problems. works like a dream.

Did your iphone work initially with the 32k SIM, and then started giving hassles? If a SIM swop to a 64k SIM really does work, then it has to do with the connection points
