iPhone finally arrives

I do not expect anything, I just don't understand the reasoning behind being so hush hush about a big product release (probably the biggest) and a contract which disallows the date of release being published on the website more than a few days ahead of the actual launch date, nevermind the contract pricing & options/features.

I just think the information giving to us is minimal, and can be done better for those of us who are/were upgrading. like I said - I'm guessing a lot of money is gonna be at stake here, and some disappointed people who bought the wrong phone to early, or waited and waited and end up not being able to afford it anyway.
(saw some on the forum already, actually)

Hi Keeper

Your argument may well be valid, but again I point out that the lack of info comes from Apple and not Vodacom. So why not direct your aggression towards Apple?

I know Vodacom is responsible for being the distributor in RSA for the iPhone, not Apple themselves.

The Apple site has no information on the Contract plan/pricing/features/availability of it in SA, but rather updates & firmware/specs/Pictures and what not, which is understandable.
It would be much more logical for me to expect to find this information from the network & distributor themselves.

If I am to buy a Seagate Hard drive, i'll find out about the specs on the seagate website, and find the availability/date and price info at the distributor side i.e my Local computer shop/their website.

I'm not aggressive towards Vodacom, just frustrated....lol

Keeper : Problem is, VC can't release that kind of information until all the contractual issues with Apple are settled down. Apple may be demanding an unlimited data contract for R70pm, which is just not feasible for VC to provide.. those kind of issues would stop contract and pricing details being finalised.

thats a good point yes, but these things should have been finalised looooooong ago.

All other networks already have launched the iPhone MONTHS ago, and had their pricing on the web BEFORE the launch, not a launch date a few DAYS prior, and a price AFTER the launch.
this is what makes Vodacom seem responsible, not Apple.

Your HDD analogy is a bit dicey taking your sig into consideration. :)

And what if you read about a new, coming drive on Seagate's site and you phone your local reseller and they tell you they don't have pricing or availability yet? Happens all the time. Just like it happened with the iPhone.

Apple is the distributor, Vodacom is the Network Provider. We have exactly the same model with Huawei, Nokia, etc. They import and distribute the phones and datacards and dictate pricing, availability, etc. Often a specific model will be available in Europe before SA, and we have to wait for it to be released here before we get pricing, etc.

So it's the same with the iPhone, except, in this case, the manufacturer is more involved in the complete value chain.

I don't think the iPhone warrants all this hype and, I personally, would have just release the damn thing a long time ago....but it was not my (nor VC's) call.

I agree, some of the "blame" does to some degree fall on VC's head for that aspect... but then Apple haven't really officially announced a 3rd round of launchs(or is it 4th)... so maybe VC are pushing hard to get the phone out as soon as possible in some ways to try and force Apples hand.

I was honestly very excited by the iPhone when I first read it.. but now, I'm not so sure... Its not that I don't want one, but the pricing will have to be pretty good to convince me of it since I'll need a whole new contract to get one and thats just an expensive option to have a new toy, esp since I've got a whole boat load of them recently...

my sig is simply there to help others:o
stop trying to put people down with their signatures v3g...lol

Apple may be vodacom's distributor, but Vodacom is our local distributor (Our ONLY, exclusive distributor)

I do agree that Apple has been a b@stard with their rules, and I feel sorry for vodacom for having to put up with Steve's "Rules".
But like I said...we need some info here...you can't blame us for wanting this gadget, this is MyBB Members we're talking about here!! LOL :D

With Marine1, I just realised that saying anything about a Yank company is probably going to fall on deaf ears.

Yours is just funny. BTW, I've repaired quite a few hard drives by swapping parts around. But it's a gamble of note.

myBB has always been the recipient of 'advanced' info, you might have noticed in the past, so (ask yourself) why not this time?

Lastly, to really get you wondering, one of the statements above (that you believe to be fact) is actually incorrect. But you'll have to guess which one. ;)

over hyped phone. and if i was ever to buy one i would never go through vodacom.

But you'll have to guess which one. ;)

There is only 1 statement you could be talking about...

but I don't even wanna ask cause i might upset you If i say the wrong thing, and get people to wait before buying the iPhone...cause people take what is said here as religion. so i'll just keep quiet.:D for once atleast.

but it can't be anyway....there can be only 1! The chosen one......

Dude, I don't think the other networks are even ready even if they COULD sell the 3G iPhone
vodacom has a huge 3G Network to benifit the iPhone 3G, others don't.

Also, you can only say it's over hyped if you have used the device for a while, and by saying
if i was ever to buy one
you clearly have no say. all this fuss on the iPhone isn't for the joke, there's a reason.

here we go, something more Official from Apple Insider:

"Apple is gearing up for its third and final phase of international iPhone expansion during the 2008 calendar year, which will include launches in Russia, Brazil and Egypt, but not China or Korea.

Some of those launches are expected to take place as early as this weekend. E-mails sent to AppleInsider readers this week from local carriers imply the device will be available in both Brazil and South Africa this Friday, September 26th."

but we all knew that already...
we want prices now.

Oh, btw the www.vodashop.mobi site that you could select the iPhone from as an option has now changed its prepaid comment for the iPhone:

Confirm details for APPLE iPhone 8gig - on contract and in stores only.

makes sense at launch
