iPhone not a smartphone ?

To be a zealot is to give up reason so don't put too much stock in what they say.

Personally I consider the iPhone to be a really good phone which is much more of a pleasure to use than any other phone I have used.

Perhaps you could give a quick summary of what features these phones that are "lightyears" ahead of the iPhone have that make them so?

In my case, I'd like bluetooth file transfer, delivery reports for sms's, would also like access to the phones storage to my mac, so I can move files that way.
Otherwise happy, and wouldn't trade it for any other phone out there.

Lol, the HTC series has some phone that use the Iphones power to power its clock :p

I will find out the name and then post it :) Also I have the samsung f700 im happy with it...

Also the Iphone is over priced IMO...
 
I dunno much about the iPhone and have always thought of it as a 'look at me' fashion accessory - but I could be wrong. Anyone have specs?

Does it have HSDPA and wireless? I think a large thing with smartphones is connectivity :/ Also - I *think* a hard QWERTY keyboard is easier and quicker to type than a touch sensitive screen ...

Didn't the 1st ones have EDGE only?

Which you are entitled to and by no means should you buy a product that doesn't meet your needs. But keep in mind that just because it doesn't meet all your requirements, it doesn't mean that there aren't people whose needs it does meet and more.

Suggesting that everyone who buys one is buying it as a fashion accessory just comes off has ignorant and bitter.

Its not sooooo bad, but its not thaaat good.
It has HSDPA and Wifi.
I guess after a while the touch screen users will be able to type quite fast.

I think on a hardware keypad, be it a qwerty or a numeric one, you are gonna be able to type faster than the touch screens. I had a look at the LG whatsamacallit touch screen. And its lank cool to have a touch screen, it seemed to me like you have to make sure of what you pressing...

On the regular keypads, you can almost be 2 letters ahead.. If that makes sense :D

Ok but you cant compare the iPhone touch screen to the LG, iPhone wins by light years! The UI is fast and responsive even when typing, so im sure after a few months people using them will have adapted quite well to the touch screen keyboard.

Even most kindergardenPhones can overcome these simple stumble blocks that the fruit company could not even fix in their second version of this fashion-disaster-cum-pseudo-phone

  • No copy/paste functionality
  • No landscape QWERTY keyboard except in the web browser
  • No vibration feedback when typing (real buttons have that built in)
  • Still no option for turning Predictive typing OFF
  • No multi tasking (background notification service is in the works to remedy that one)
  • Numerous messaging features lacking: no MMS (WTF?), no SMS forwarding (might be solved by a system-wide copy/paste functionality), no deleting individual messages (OMG WTF?!)
  • Numerous email features lacking: no bulk "mark as read", no search, no sorting of any kind, no ZIP or RAR support in mail, can't send full resolution camera images via mail (they get resized to 800x600) (L4m3!)
  • No call duration recorded in the Calls Log
  • Cannot snooze appointments and cannot set repetitive alerts for reminders
  • No search in the iPod music library (usefull actually cause iPod sucks)
  • No video recording (OMG WTF BBQ?!?)
  • No voice dialing ('00 model nokia 3310 had that)
  • No Bluetooth file transfer or stereo Bluetooth music streaming (w34k!)
  • No GPS navigation software (c'mon, I have Nokia Maps and Garmin!)

Seriously, the iPhone only has a nice screen and then it still does not bring a keypad to the party. So it is useless - really - kindergardenPhones can beat it. The N82 is perhaps 5 maybe 10 years ahead of it.

How is this not a smartphone? Multitasking is only one component of it. I could argue that there are phones out there that would not be considered smartphones that have al the functionality of a smartphone and are not counted under that banner.

I guess if Gartner call it a smartphone then that's what it is. Personally I think the disctinction between smartphones, PDAs and ordinary phones is a fine line at best.

I'd have to go with Nokia's definition of a smartphone - and that boils down to multitasking.

Sure, the Series40 line of Nokia phones with their own nokiaOS is great - it out performs the iPhone on pretty much anything plus it has basic features (like MMS) the the iPhone does not even have at all. But - ever since I tried Series60 (symbian) I will never go back to anything else.

These days symbian is being used by more than one vendor and while it UI is still slow and a bit dull it is getting there.

I don't have any mobile phone OS - I just hate anything overprices and under featured (read anything apple).

Well for that price it must do what a Series60 Nokia can do - perhaps even faster and better I'd say.

Again, at that price - and for the limited features they are getting - you really cannot look at it in another way. Sure people have different needs - my grand parents are happy with a rock bottom Motorola. But they paid rock bottom Motorola money for it....

Did you even read the article ? There is a big list of things that the fruit product cannot do. Even more so that the usual "I can't do that cause I do not have a PC" type stuff. Go ahead - the the article, especially page 3 http://www.gsmarena.com/iphone_3g-review-272p3.php and see how many standard feature we have become used to is MIA on the fruit.

And in many ways every Nokia is 5 to 10 years behind the iPhone. You know what buy it don't buy it no-one gives a crap. There is no such thing as the perfect phone. There are phones that suit certain ways of interfacing with a computer and others that suit different ways of interfacing.

Just because the iPhone doesn't give you what you want doesn't make it a bad phone. It just makes it the wrong phone for you.

Grow up and get a life.

Jokes, but that list of what the iPhone cannot do was a bit longer than I thought it would be. But, I think Apple are smart with their statergy. They probably could bring out a super-does-it-all-phone, because those things are not new technologies, and Apple is actually very advanced. But what they do give you, they give you really really well. And therefore, you will want to buy the next model that comes out. (Just as the v1 guys want to buy a v2 iPhone). This is clever.

If the iPhone 3G had every feature that is needed, why would you upgrade after 2 years. They do not want people keeping this phone for 5years +-. (I'm obviously leaving out new technology that comes up for simplicity reasons)

Now, don't get us wrong - don't let our upgrader's point of view get in your way. We were impressed by the iPhone 1G and now it's even better. If you've never had one and the iPhone 3G is offered in your country - now that Apple's creation is finally on par with most other modern handsets specs-wise - it seems the right time to get yourself geared up.
The Apple iPhone, be it 1G or 3G, still has the most impressive full touch user interface to-date, and with the concept of AppStore, it have just gotten better. The iPhone 3G is evidently more evolution than revolution, but it still packs quite a punch. And there's some unique features that you can hardly get in any other high-end gadgets.

It really doesnt seem like condemnation to me and while I dont even particularly want an iPhone that article really isnt off-putting.

To be realistic I think one could probably generate a big list of negative things about almost any cellphone so I guess that means they're all rather sucky. ;)
