Is IRC still alive?

I'd rather "forum" than IRC.
Just me though,
There's a few smurfs, donkeys and whatnot other creatures around that would flood the chat.
I'm sure of it :p

(ps, still like those creatures)

When the real 'Warez' existed with the fileservers setup on various IRC servers based on newsgroups and as a teen, I met a few girlfriends on there and a couple one night stand mommies hahahah

Kinda, but think of a time way before social media, instant messaging etc. IRC was the closet to today's social media. You'd just go there to hang out, meet new people and have fun, and spend hours and hours doing so.

The atmosphere was very friendly and welcoming, not like the toxic kek you see today, all with complete strangers from all over SA.

If you were from CPT you'd jump into the CPT channel, where there might be 50 people. Find some people to chat to and maybe hook up IRL.

There were weren't too many channels with lots of users, so it was great when you'd connect and see a high number online. Also their weren't too many nerds, it was weird in that way, in my experience at least. Also loads of ladies for some reason, lots of hotties too.

My nick back then was Cheapie or Cheepie.

I think its because it was all new to us, and most people at the time who I came across were students or people in IT- young with similar minds

now just about everyone with a phone is online, so thats what changed

That's the result of anybody can be online nowadays. Imagine if most had to manually dail and perform the handshake...

aaah yes, had lekker times with Elmerfud, blast from the past. I think a lot of the #Camelot okes was Stellies Varsity peeps at the time.
one chick I flirted with there was Storm

Cant remember her real name
Met her at Waterfront one night for an IRC get together. She arrived with her mother for the night :laugh: She had a lisp and could only drink through a straw or something like that.
LOL, I was in a very long term relationship at the time living with my gf so there was no ways I was gonna play around

Hahaha now I don’t know if it’s the chick I’m thinking of. She was a lot older than me, maybe like 7 years.

Not IRC, but I have friends on Facebook etc that I met on World of Warcraft, Twitter, Interpals and even MyADSL.

But yea, also spent a fair amount of time on IRC, haven't gotten that close to anyone on there.
 
Met my wife on IRC, her room mate did compsci and roped her into chatting with us.
I too remember getting drunk and setting my nick to "Gayspode" which earns an instant k-line. Poor dude trying to run a server for everyone's benefit and got so much flack.
mIRC scripting was pretty cool as well. Did a bunch of stuff there.
Registering peoples nicks/channels with nickserv/chanserv when they didn't know better was fun too :D
I hung out on #webdesign mostly.
Imo adsl killed irc in SA. Yes you got the odd nerds like @Sinbad that would idle all day from some server, but mostly it was people logging in at 7pm and having a bit of a chat. Then everyone got fancy adsl connections and idled all day every day to look cool but weren't around much, everyone wasn't getting on at the same time etc so it just kinda died out. you'd join #5fm or something and it would have 120 people in but they're all idle.

Actually on ZAnet Gayspode felt it necessary to be different and changed it to Babyserv.
