There's peak and then off peak. Off peak I'm not too concerned. Peak I am, as this dictates IPC purchasing. Cannot disclose our figures, unfortunately, for obvious reasons, but on average an ISP in SA purchasing IPC, averaging per account what many mybb users consider to be "normal" peak usage, would be out of business very quickly. It's simply the reality of the costings involved, unless you charged the earth, which people are not willing to hand over.

You could find that not to be an issue at all. This is where the 30 day rolling window is beneficial, over capped and soft capped (i.e. monthly cap) accounts. You might have a 'busy' couple of days, but your usage will then stabilise after a few days of back to normal usage, thereby keeping you under the throttle limit.

Perhaps this makes more sense to deweyzeph?

I hear you. I'm sure it'll pay off once the less demanding users catch wind, whose expectations of 'normal' usage differ to those of the many MyBb users. It is up to us technically inclined folk to spread the good word, after all.

Not really, no. Those sorts of customers are far better off on a small capped package and any decent ISP would advise as such. We certainly try to if someone contacts live chat to discuss the best package for their usage case. Likewise, we do the same for those with heavy usage requirements, and will even turn away business if we believe we're not the right network for someone's needs, or if our product range won't suit someone's needs.

But heavy users are always subsidised by lower usage users on any network. It's simply how it works. There's a break-even point on all accounts, and high usage customers always exceed this, but one expects lower usage customers to keep things in check financially. If it wasn't for this, you'd see far higher pricing in the market. The problem comes in when average usage increases substantially but costs don't. Or retail costs are subsidised by an ISP and the market expects other ISPs to follow suit. But that's just the nature of business.
 
Same here with Mweb. 32 GB this month, and my torrents are moving at 18kb/s during the day, and 0.1 at night. Suddenly happened in the last month, or so. (Uncapped 4mb)

The most i've ever downloaded per month this year was 112GB.

I was dloading gimp through utorrent this morning.

I had 32 kb/s with utorrent.

I switched over to my 1gb free afrihost account, and it instantly
bounced up to -420- and was finished in a jiffy.

Time for a change -.-

Just think twice about Afrihost. Check their forum threads. Endless problems, poor support.

Honestly, I would only recommend Afrihost to heavy users who intend taking out a business account. There is no other affordable account that doesn't shape or throttle at all for any amount of usage.

AH have had more than their share of hiccoughs, but they're usually brief and not representative of the overall experience.
 
Forget uncapped .... not even going to read through this whole thread. Afrihost 200gb capped.... have fun....

MWEB 10mb uncapped = R539
Afrihost 200gb (100+100) = R399 @whatever your line speed is up to 40mb

No brainer....

Oh yeah... 6 concurrent connections on your Afrihost if needed ;)

I have to echo these comments and disagree about thinking twice.
Being an ex MWEB now AH customer, AH are no worse than MWEB for support, but their business accounts are the real gem on the market, and I would not willingly move away from my AH account.

If I had to go anywhere else, it would be Crystal Web.
MWEB killed the relationship a few years ago, but this is trite among many forumites.
 
MWEB offers some of the best support there is, and the best on this forum.

And more importantly, better-than-capped quality bandwidth.
 
Just know that with Afrihost even on a business uncapped account, while it works fairly well most of the time, you will at some point go through weeks of lousy connectivity when they hit an IPC "capacity issue" or their shaping system goes haywire, followed by endless PR spin about how they're not shaping when they most obviously are. And don't actually try to use it for business, unless you don't mind having certain protocols like mysql randomly being blocked. Also don't expect them to proactively inform users about network issues, either. Their support is always the last to know since they seem to rely entirely on user reports to gauge the status of their network. Don't say you weren't warned. From what I can fathom WebAfrica or CrystalWeb are the best of the bunch at the moment - rather try them.

Don't you have to pay for those though?

I would rather just get an ISP where the torrents actually work and come down full speed. No extra payments.
 
This is why Mweb would never work for me as "uncapped" ... and ultimately proof why it isn't actually an "uncapped" product.
